Back by my production company, OMW Productions, I have the go ahead to start my first tournement. I put a enterance fee mainly to only have those who plan on going through with the tournement sign up. 4$ is the equivalent to two coffees, so its not to break the bank or anything. I only expect the turn out to be around 32 people, so I set the prize pool to around 120$. The 8$ missing from that prize pool is to cover the charges I'll get from Pay-Pal.
If this is a success though, I plan on making the entrance fee slightly bigger, and the percent taken from the prize pool slightly larger, for I'll take the profits from the tournements and host large SC2 events, not as big as MLG or anything, but significant enough that people will want to come.
I really hope this tournement turns out well. I might get OMW Productions to sponsor show matches to bring in more viewers before I hold another tournement. I really just want to boost the involvement in the SC2 community in North America.
If you want to check it out, heres the link...

To be honest, I would just increase the entrance fee right now. It shouldn't be overly out of someones way to pay $8-10. The prize pool would double too, so they wouldn't just be pitching in more for nothing either.

Yeah but I just feel for the first tournement 4$ is a safe ammount.

I say change the date at least to give another extra week. That way people have two weeks to decide whether they want to play

I think you could easily have a higher fee, as if you can't afford it, it's not like you have to enter, and most people can afford it, especially if you double the prize pool.

"Eligible Leagues Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond"
I don't think a buyin tournament would work good if it's not for all skill-levels. I think you'd much problems with masters/GM playing on smurf/friend accounts

I would suggest holding off on the tournament for a little while and to think carefully about all aspects of tournament logistics. There's a lot more to running a tournament than simply opening up signups and providing a prize.

Great to see people starting up event like this. Best of luck with it.
But now, a bit of criticism. You label the tournament as a semi-pro event (on the z33k page), but it is only open to players from Bronze to Diamond. The entry fee is pretty low, but it would probably still be a bit discouraging for lower level players knowing that they would likely be against people a few leagues above themselves. This isn't to say that people won't join, I'm sure some will just to have a good time.
You mention that this is your first tournament, and you decide to have an entry fee (sure, it may be to ensure that people don't decide to not show up, but still). Again, I'm sure that people will sign up, but at the same time, people don't have any knowledge as to if it will be run well and/or worth their time and money. My suggestion would be to start with some small, free events to get your name a bit more known. Gain a fanbase and credibility.

Exactly! That is why you need to get it out there. Promote it before trying to get money of it. Try running some free trials before this one.

I was under the impression that you needed express permission from Blizzard to run a tournament with an entry fee. I might be wrong and they probably wouldn't care for such a small tournament but it's worth looking into.

Any tournament needs permission and they usually give it to you.

Ok so i did that, thanks for the heads up, but in the terms and conditions after setting it up with them, the first requirement for the Grant of License is "(a) The Tournament must be free to enter;" even though in the set up process I put there was an enterace fee....
