Alright before this starts this is not a 'which game is better' or anything like that question so yeah.
Situation
Anyway here is my situation right now, I play SC2 and Broodwar. I'm playing SC2 about 90% of the time and Broodwar the other 10%. What I plan on doing for the duration of my summer off of school is switch that around so I'll be playing Broodwar 90% of the time and occasionally SC2.
Why
A few friends, and watching old VODs recently got me back into playing Broodwar and I really enjoy the game a lot. I'm getting back into it and plan on playing 1v1 on ICCUP and all that good stuff and have started already.
Okay so what's the problem?
The issue is I will still come back to play SC2 all the time again like I have been and go back to the competitive scene. I was wondering, for anyone who may have done this, if when I come back to SC2 will there be any I guess 'payout' from playing Broodwar. Again I love both games but I do not want to play Broodwar if I won't get anything back when I come back to SC2. Now I know things like my BOs and understanding for SC2 won't increase from playing a different game but I mean more about mechanics and execution that sort of thing. From my understanding certain mechanics like macro and multitasking could increase at a faster rate when playing Broodwar compared to SC2 but I have no evidence to back this up.
Summary
Anyway I will play Broodwar more regardless since I find it a lot more fun right now than Starcraft 2 but I do not want to how should I say 'waste?' these next 2 or so months playing it in place of SC2 if I won't get much in return.
Any advice would be great and thanks for reading! ♥ ^_^

Well, practicing Brood War will help you tremendously in Starcraft 2 because it will sharpen your macro and mechanics and the like a lot. However, that's about all the "payout" I can see it giving you. And also, if you're having fun playing BW I don't see why you should stop.

As a person who experienced going back and forth from SC2 and BW remember these things:
Workers do not automatically mine in BW Hotkeys have changed for most units You cannot select more than one building at a time in BW No Xelnaga watch towers in BW
Can't really think of any more at the moment but I'm SURE there's more. GL. SC2 and BW are both so amazing in their own ways but HONESTLY, BW is more challenging. SC2 is very noob friendly.

I wish I was able to go back and play BW, as much as i hated losing all the time, it was a lot more fun to play. Yet now I'm spoiled with the fact that i can play SC2 casually and still be able to get wins on Ladder at masters level.
Still watch BW as often as i can though. Not something i can do without
oh advice, they're different games, don't practice mechanics in BW to improve your mechanics in SC2 etc.

playing bw is never a waste

don't forget broodwar is a balanced game! .
Broodwar will definitely help your macro/multi tasking alot as you actually need alot. It really is crazy how much easier it is in sc2 when you go back and play bw then sc2 . I play bw occasionally due to the fact I find it a better game though :D.

You will learn to: drag smaller boxes get map control/vision without using xel'naga watchtowers (like on Belshir beach) Multitask (drops) Macro harder off more bases Hotkey your units better
Dw about the "payout" man. A good game is a good game.

I think you need to change your perspective bro.
BW: You think its more fun and some of the skill can probably be transferred to SC2. SC2: You think the game is less fun and it doesn’t increase your skill in BW (it probably makes you worse if anything).
So, the question you should ask yourself is “What is the payout from playing SC2?”

Oh come on guys, read the OP's bolded letter xD

To the OP: You must keep one thing in mind; the best way to improve in SC2 is to play SC2. By playing BW you are wasting time that could be spent on SC2. But my point with the previous post was that by playing SC2 you are wasting your life if you think BW is more fun. You can obviously play both games and you can be good at both games at the same time, as long as you are prepared to devote a lot of time on playing.
For example, a player with a high iCCup rank can easily maintain a master rank in SC2 without much effort. But reaching a high rank on iCCup will take a lot of time (and is ridiculously hard). These hours could be spent on SC2. In the end, you must decide on how much time you are willing to spend on games.

Considering that like D+ on iCCup is Masters rank, I think it would be a good idea to invest some time in Brood War, and some in SC2. Maybe just go 50/50?

Yeah but it takes more time to reach D+ than masters imo. I mean, every master ranked player out there managed to reach that rank in less than a year. That can hardly be said about D+ players.
Its pretty simple, playing BW will increase your skill in SC2, but spending the same amount of time on SC2 will increase you skill more so. Just play the game that you enjoy the most.
