I recently read Mikilatov blog entry (http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=232866) and some lines made me think a little:

400k in money for SC2 are you kidding? That's actually like so bad for esports. The prize pool is way too top heavy. How is a guy like Destiny(omg big fan hes the only stream I watch ever) going to feed his baby if MC comes over and wins it so easy?

Is prize pool distribution very fair ?
Usually, the first player gets about twice the price compared to 2nd, but does he really worth it ? The runner-up played the same amount of games as him, and maybe the final was very tight...
This is very important IMO because prizes are a part of progamers salary : couldn't it be fairer ?

Let takes some exemples : in TSL 3, Thorzain won 4:3 against Naniwa and won 15k$. But did he really needed that much ? I could have won 10k, Naniwa 8k, Kas and Hasuobs 500$ more, etc...
It is even worse for GSL Super Touney, where MMA got only 1/3 of Polt's prize, which is already 100 000 $ ! This is really huge IMO (especially considering there was 6 matches played by Polt).

What do you think of that ?

(I apologize if there are some English mistakes in this post)

In Starcraft 2, it does seem to be very top-heavy when compared to other eSports of the past, and most normal competitions in various disciplines. As much as they want to hype up their events, top-heavy prize distributions are disadvantageous to long-term goals.

It's only fair that the best win. Having a larger prize pool doesn't affect the quality of the games or the players in the tournament. Larger prize pools only have the tendency to happen once or twice (because of the value). Having smaller prize pools like MLG create more frequent and better tournaments while larger prize pools happen to be once in a blue moon kind of thing (GSL Super tournament etc.)

I'm not complaining about the size of the prize pools, when they are getting bigger that means there's more audience, that's not a problem.
I want to emphasize the fact that players make a living of these. In GSLST, the 3rd and 4th players got 10k, does winning the finals really worth 90k more ?

So your problem is with the top heavy sort of prize pool?

I think there was a topic regarding the GSL and its top heavy prizing (with the steep gap from first to second). MLG goes from 5k to 3k to 1k, I think, for 1st, 2nd and 3rd. which is a more steadily decline and not so top prize centric.
Personally I like the steep climb, puts even more on the line and the competitors have to really go the distance!

What I wasn't a fan of was the 1 prize only at the DH invitational, where only the winner got anything (15k) and 2nd to 8th got zilch.

And MC's expressionless proxy 2 gate to make a cool 15k.

Ya, the payout system, whether through tournament winnings or salaries or whatever else, should be less top heavy so that being a progamer who isn't at the absolute top is a viable course of action. Otherwise nobody will be able to attempt to work their way up to that top without going broke

SC2 prize distribution appears to be top-heavy because the top is smaller. If you compare it to any other sport, I bet the fraction of people who strive for the top is about the same as in SC2, it just seems less top heavy because all these pros succeeding are making millions. But for every pro you see succeed, there are so many more that fail.

Skill differential at the top is worth far more than skill differential near the middle of the pack.

How is it hurting esports? If you want more money, you got to win it. If you get 2nd and complain about money, too bad, get better and get first next time

If longevity is desired, top-heavy prize amounts do nothing to further the prosperity of the "sport." That's the issue.
