Exciting update (10/28):
Behold! Zeus!
+ Show Spoiler +

[image loading][image loading]

After a couple months, and talking about going to an animal shelter for some time a friend asked if we wanted a puppy. It only took one look to say yes ^^

_______________________________________________________________________________
So just over a week ago my wife Amy got the news she had hoped for. Her coworker had informed her that strangely the day prior someone had tied a puppy to her mailbox. My wife was a little envious (not in a bad way!) because she had been mentioning wanting a dog for ohhh almost a year now. But the good news was her coworker wasn't allowed to keep the puppy and she asked Amy if we wanted the puppy. She called me at work right then and there and I of course said yes.

We loved our little girl so much! She wasn't completely housebroken by any means, which can be frustrating and smelly, but she was the cutest sweet dog, more than we could have hoped for. For a visual (no pictures since I'm at work).+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading][image loading]
She seems to be some mix of possibly pit bull, jack russel terrier, lab, and beagle. We took her everywhere we could, introducing her to friends, hanging out at ultimate frisbee, and going on walks multiple times a day. My wife was so happy and so was I!

Now I'm sitting here at work dreading making the call this afternoon. Earlier this morning a friend asked if she could stop by really quick. She came with a piece of paper. It took a few seconds for it to click. She said she was really sorry, and she debated ignoring it and not telling us. I just told her, "Ok, thanks" as she left. I took it with me to show Amy and I got to watch the same couple seconds of confusion before the denial and despair set in. Needless to say it was a very sad morning.

It's only been a little more than a week but it's just devastating for me and my wife
I'm browsing TL trying to distract myself but thought I'd share.

Update: Spoke with the owner on my lunch break. She's not willing to take money. I'm planning on showing up with a couple hundred dollar bills to change her mind so we'll see.She offered to find us another puppy like her since she knows someone... but it won't be the same as my little girl Her mannerisms were so cute and endearing! I'll let you all know how it turns out this evening. Wish me luck.

Update: We met with the owner Friday evening and they still weren't willing to accept any money. At least we know they care for her. The puppy's mother was there (she looked like a border collie mix haha). We know we did the right thing. It's been a couple days and I just haven't had time to update. All I can say is that it sucks. We both miss our little girl a lot and I'll leave it at that. Thanks for all the support and comments on Friday. It helped. You guys are all awesome. <3

Sorry to hear about your situation. What was the paper about, a lost dog? What I dont get is how someone tied it to your friends mailbox and abandoned it unless it wasn't the owner but someone who found it. At any rate I strongly recommend you visit a local shelter there are plenty of loving dogs that would have to be euthanized if no one adopts. It would be a win win situation for both your family and the dog. Good luck with everything let us know what happens.

Ha thanks, it is pretty awesome.

We're going to offer to buy her from the previous owner so hopefully they are willing to accept.

Apparently, from the description on the lost puppy sign, she jumped out the car window. I'm guessing someone pulled over and tied her to the nearest mailbox thinking the owner would come back soon and see her.

We've definitely looked at the local animal shelter. Not to sound cheap but it's like almost $150 to adopt a puppy there. One of the benefits is the immunizations and vaccines but my mom is a veterinarian and she is able to do all of that for us. It's definitely an option, this situation just seemed to good to be true, which appears to be the case.

Those pets need the most love. My cocker still drives me nuts. He's quite the baby.

Do you know what breed it was?

Just cautionary but be prepared for rejection someone else also bonded the same way you guys have with this puppy, and went out posting flyers they're probably worried sick. I mean if it happened to me I wouldn't part with my dog for any amount of money. By the way $150 is the best deal you're going to get IMO. My Bichon cost over $800 though other breeds can go for $400 ish. Check nextdaypets.com if you're going to make an offer it has to be at least more than the market value for them to even consider it.

We weren't entirely sure. She has the likeness of the breeds I mentioned in the OP. My mom was going to take a closer look at her this weekend when we visit both of our family's for my sister-in-law's graduation party.

I know it's a long shot but we're going to try of course. And I'm well aware of the cost for purebreds, it can be pretty crazy. We just want a dog and were hoping one would turn up like it did in this situation.

Isn't there a local shelter which doesn't provide such immunizations and such? There's one near me that you can buy animals for $5 to $10 (and a $25 to $50 deposit you get back after getting the animal fixed, if it needs it).

When i read this I thought of a dog tied to the bottom of a mailbox, just hanging in the air. I was shocked to hear your wife was happy. then I got it XP

If you keep it congrats!

150$ Really doesnt sound that expensive - IIRC, when we bought our first dog (from a kennel), it was something like 1k (at the time the dollar was so much stronger tho ^^ so in those days it would have been about 600$).

I think a dog is worth the investment !

EDIT: I see someone else posted much the same~ I hope you can find what you are looking for, its hard to beat a dog companionship wise =)

You can look in newspapers and craigslist for people giving away puppies, that's how my family has always gotten dogs.
It's supposed to be automatic but actually you have to press this button.

I agree! We've been holding out for the "right one" and the money was just a small hurdle that had me waiting instead of just going out and getting one But at this point you're so right, it's hard to beat a dog's companionship. Thanks

Edit: The craigslist suggestion is a good one. We'll have to keep our eye out. We were planning on waiting until summer so it was easier to have a rambunctious puppy when it can go outside often. I was under the impression people had puppies they were willing to give away, but nothing had turned up til now. I thought we had hit the jackpot, she is wonderful. At least I know they care for her if they won't accept any money

If you think $150 is expensive enough to even buy a dog, you'd never be able to deal with actual cost of ownership.

We got 2 siberian huskies for $300 dollars but they turned out to be from a mill and weren't very healthy. After one passed away, we got a husky/samoyed mix at a shelter for $125 and he is much better looking and healthier than any of our two huskies.

Look for a local shelter and you'll wind up with a healthier dog than one from a mill and probably even healthier. And there's always the good feeling of rescuing a dog.

Puppy mills can be deceiving though. Where we bought our huskies was in a normal house out in the country and didn't have any kind of cages or anything by it, so be very careful. We didn't find out that it was a mill until 9 years later when we were buying our other dog and the shelter owner knew about the place.

Someone posted an informative video of puppy mills in the vegan thread:

I'm aware of the costs, I've had pets my whole life I'm hoping you mean the best with your advice. It's not a matter of affording a dog, I can easily do that. It's a matter of is that the best use of my money. In this situation, if it had truly been abandoned (instead of her jumping out the car window, which makes me sick) then I would have been able to provide a loving and safe home for her which she needed.

I think it's gross you have to give the puppy back to someone who let her jump out a car window as it sounds like you're more capable of giving the animal a loving and safe home.

I hope that if you can't keep the puppy somehow you'll choose to adopt out of a shelter though.

I understand how you must feel about this, I know its hard to give away pets that you love. When I was young we had to give our dog away and it absolutely broke my heart, but it was the right thing to do.

Does the lady sound like a competent owner that could provide it with a good home? Was the car parked with a window cracked and the dog so happened to just run away and wasn't there when they returned? You should give them the benefit of the doubt; they are looking for their dog.

It would be very noble of you to return the dog to its rightful owner. The owner could be just as heart-broken as you guys are, even worse maybe. Could you gauge the reaction of the owner when you told her you found her puppy?

In the end if you return the dog, you can always go help another puppy who could use a warm loving home. Best of luck with your decision!

Razith, thanks so much. We are definitely going to return her because it is the right thing to do. Hopefully the owner changes her mind though, she has five other dogs apparently! And this is definitely not the end of our search for a puppy

Just ask the owner where she got hers. Puppies are pretty much the same they'll all make the same endearing faces give it a few days and you won't even know the difference. Plus you'll have the benefit of knowing you are the full and rightful owner.

Well you and your wife should go together, take the dog and talk to the owner. I would suggest to just tell them how you feel and it would definitely show the caring owner that you are / could be. If you go in person and just talk with the owner they may change their mind as it is far more personable than talking over the phone.

But in the end its going to be the owners choice; it is the right thing to do and I admire you for that. Even if the outcome isn't favorable, I'm sure any new puppy you and your wife get will warm up to you just as fast as this puppy if not quicker. Nature vs Nurture, the personality of the dog definitely reflects the caring environment you placed it in, and I'm sure the new puppy will be just as loveable too. Best of luck again!

Aww! I saw this coming, but you guys have my sympathy for losing a pet, however briefly she might have been in your care. It's never easy. Something similar happened to me once, and I was just a young teen at the time... rough times!

I'm glad she was happily reunited, and I'm glad to know that whatever pet you eventually get will be well taken care of. And, if the story is any indication, there's no doubt she'll be taken good care of, too.

There's a topic in the TL Community section where he's giving away puppies if you are willing to go to Romania to pick it up.

It's worth about 300 pounds and they're about a month old, truly adorable.

Awww that sucks

sue seems like an idiot who shouldn't have a pet if they tied the dog to the post and left it there... could also be someone found it and didn't feel like going to the pound. Maybe I'm jaded, but I've found too many dogs that have been 'lost' by parents who just really didn't want to deal with a dog anymore and other shitty stuff. I saw the puppy thread but Romania is much too far! I'm sure we'll get a dog sometime soon, we just miss our little girl

It's been a while since there's been anything worth mentioning but yesterday that changed After talking for the past couple weeks about how we need to find time to visit one of the animal shelters nearby a friend asked us if we would take a puppy! This one is ours free and clear
