Does anyone know a good place/site to find professional web designers/developers? If you're not familiar with my previous posts, I'm looking to start a new web-based business (has to do with gaming ^_^) so I need to find good designers and developers.

I already have drawn up a site map, some rudimentary wire frames, and list of modules/components that will be necessary for the project. As such, there is a fair amount of scope and complexity attached to it, so I'm trying to find people who can give me an accurate quote and time frame which is can be completed in.

I live in a small town in NY so local options are.... sparse. So guys, where should I start looking? Also, if you can recommend something then that would be awesome.

Thank you!

Personally I've not used it, but several of my friends have, and they are plenty reliable (they are the coders to be rented). It can be difficult as the Russians and Indians tend to undercut a lot of the other offers by quite a large margin, and are usually not as good, but you get what you pay for.

Depending on what you're doing, I would honestly advise against any kind of one-off, freelance hiring and instead place my faith in an established company with whom you can feel some sense of assurance that they will be there to help you as your needs change or evolve down the road.

Like most things, you get what you pay for. But the adage is even further extended because the barriers of entry for any Joe who wants to make a few bucks doing programming in his spare-time are quite low. If you are serious about your business, then research an experienced and competent developer and pay what they charge. You will find as time goes on that what is more important over the lifespan of your project is the support you receive post-launch and the ability to grow your business without unnecessary burdens. With an established developer comes accountability. You will want someone you can phone up in the wee-hours of the morning when your site is bugging out, not a guy you've never met and won't answer his e-mails after he gets paid. As your business grows, you will rely on the relationship you have with your developer to see that your new needs are consistently met. Further more, you don't want to end up with some sort of kluged one-off - you don't want to have to reinvent the wheel each time you wish to update your site.

Again, it depends how serious you are. If this is something you are planning to invest a significant amount of your time and energy into, I'd recommend doing it right.

You said that local options are pretty limited, but you're in NY state - there must be all sorts of regional options at your disposal. I would recommend researching some developers in your region (driving distance so you can have a sit-down meeting), putting together a detailed plan of what you want from your project (sounds like your pretty far along with this already), and submitting it for quotes. Get as many quotes as you can. Then you can weigh your options based on quality vs. price and choose who you want to meet with.

Good luck!

I actually have a friend who works as a flash designer in a top company in NYC for movies and video games and he did mention needed a team to get this done. But thanks for taking your time and posting that since it just reaffirmed what I am seeking for. I just have to get out there and try to find a competent company that can get the job done.
