Recommend web host for business

I'm starting up a web business that will be user-driven for the most. Think of sites like craigslist, but smaller in scale and scope so I'll need typical features that I'm sure every major web host provides such as PHP, Javascript, SQL, etc.. I'm already looking into web designers for a quote, but I don't think (correct me if I'm wrong) that they provide or setup web hosting.

So that's my dilemma. I have never started a web business have done only low-end hosting so when it comes to the business side and how much bandwidth I need, I don't know.

Can you guys recommend or direct me to get the relevant information? Thanks!

I have been using Dreamhost since 2007 and they havent let me down once. I run about 6 different sites on it, all PHP based and a few have fairly complicated backends. I would recommend them. Although I have heard really good things about media temple; as it is though, none of my sites saturate Dreamhost and one of them used to get over 1k uniques a day.

I would recommend hostgator.com too. Been using it for 3 years or so and never let me down. Their support is really fast and efficient, which is nice to have.

Share hosting is only a bit cheaper than a VPS.

I would go get a VPS. You can get one from in2net for around 10 bucks a month and it is worlds better than a shared host.

The next step up is dedicated hosting which you'll need if your site really becomes popular.

I recommend dreamhost as well.

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll look into those sites and VPS services. Like I said before, I'm sure traffic will be slow at first, but I just don't wanna get caught with my pants down when I find that my new site and all the backend components aren't playing nice when/if it gets more popular.

x10 hosting is pretty good for designing businesses. I made a business site using e-commerce tools. With the correct understanding of PHP, I think you'd be able to modify it to allow other people to add their own content.

I have a couple small business websites and I use http://www.servint.net for hosting. They're a little more expensive than other hosts ($49/month) but have one of the best uptime records and their support is outstanding (I got an almost instant response at 3am, Christmas week last December).

edit:

Forgot to mention they also have a decent community that have posted tutorials and tend to answer questions about setting up and using your VPS.

x10hosting also has some pretty active forums. If you want a free account, you have to post on the forums every two months or your account gets deleted. Their uptime is amazing, and I think their rates are good and speeds are fast for paying customers.
