well about 10:00 pm at night i heard a loud thud , and suddenly i hear an alarm, i just passed it off as nothing, until my car alarm remote on my keychain (clifford alarm) started beeping and realized it was my car. went to look out the window, there was a white stationwagon pulling into a driveway. so someone who lives a couple houses from me mightve of did something to my car, but I wasn't certain.
I went out to check and a small patch of paint was scraped off my front bumper. the guy already went inside his garage. so i'm thinking he nicked my car when he was pulling into his garage. My car is pretty old and a little banged up already, so im not THAT pissed, but still...should i go knock on his door and say i saw you at the scene when my car alarm went off? call insurance for a small patch of paint? or just use some touch up paint ? what would you do?

EDIT:so i walked up to their house and and asked if the owner of a white stationwagon lived there...the guy said he had a blue wrx.. and the lady who lived on the floor on top of him said she had a grey honda insight...fml...

It's not worth calling insurance over a small scratch. Just touch it up with some pain, or if you don't care about it, leave it how it is.

yea..im probably not gonna do that. tired of people backing up into my car and accidently swiping it, though sigh..so many dings and dents because of that. and people not looking before they open their doors! and their doors slams into the side of my car.

What? Fuck that. It's attitudes like this that make people think they can get away with hitting your car. I can't stand that.
If it was me, OP, I would go to the guy and either file a claim for insurance to get it fixed or if you don't want to get it fixed, get him to give you some cash. You damage my property and you pay for it. You just don't walk away. That's just me though. My car is in almost perfect condition and I would like to keep it that way.

Try to inspect his car and see if you can see your car's paint on it. Or just confront him.

id probs either make him pay or file insurance. because i hate people who have no character. like they accidentally hit a car and drive away like nothing happened instead of finding the guy (or knocking on your door) and at least appologizing for that and how they can make it up to you.

Was there a better place you could have parked? Not trying to pin the blame on you at all, but sometimes just avoiding the idiots is easier than dealing with them at all.

If you actually want your car fixed , you should take pictures of the damage on your car, and take pictures of the spot on his vehicle that made contact as well, go through insurance to fix it, and then take him to small claims court for the bill. If he scratched it, he will have to pay for the damages. Small claims court doesnt require a lawyer either.

You better have proof/evidence that is was him. I'm sure you saw him did it, but it'll get messy if you don't have proof/evidence to show

well, i didn't see him do anything, i just saw his car near my car when my alarm went off. basically i got no evidence! and his car is in the garage, so i can't really see if my paint is on his car. until i camp his house and wait till he comes out. he left no paint on my car either. the patch that was scraped off was about a little less than half the size of a credit card.

If you dont care too much about your car's condition I suggest you do the same on his car. Then you walk up to his home, kick in his door and walk into the house with steady and firm paces towards him, grab him face to face and scream you know it was him scratching your car and tell him to never do it again or he'll don't get to see another living day.
OR
You can do it the Chickens way, and do nothing being all grumpy about it and continuing your life and grow a bit by bit more acrimonius for each day until u burst out in rage and starting to fire around you in all madness at people.
OR
You can be a man, grow some courage walk to his door and knock and speak with him in a gentle tone and tell him what you saw. Unless his a psychotic killer he will listen to you and dig it in and in all embarressing in getting caught, never do it again,(hopefully)

I see 2 options.
1. You either talk with him, get a quote for the entire scratched area, get him to pay for that quote.
2. Report it and get the scratched area fixed that way.
Do NOT just let him off the hook because you don't care that much. Like Joe said above, people who think they can get away with shit like that are plain stupid and should pay up.

Everyone is going ot have different opinions, what matters is yours.
Regardless of whether he pays for the damage, you pay for the damage or whether insurance pays for the damage, its going to be a lot of hassle to get it fixed. You'll be without your car for a day minimum, perhaps more depending on what they have to do. If its an insurance claim too it'll be even more hassle, necessitating several calls to the insurance company across a couple weeks probably, and filling out paperwork or answering questions over the phone.
It won't be significantly less hassle even if you don't go to the insurance, as you'll still need to find a repairshop, and arrange to drop the car off, and be without it for how ever long it takes.
So what you need to decide is whether the small patch on the car is worth this trouble or not. And my gut feeling, based on how you talked about your car, is that its probably not worth it. By all means mention it to him, say that you don't have any intention of taking it further or having it fixed, but that you'd appreciate it if in future he takes a bit more care. If he's any sort of decent human being, he'll probably offer you a case of beer or something like that to make it up to you.

ok thanks for the input guys, but now what pisses me off is not the damage thats been done to my car, but i can't summon the courage to knock on his door and talk to him/her about it. me so shy..fuck...

also, i wouldnt confront him. it was obviously an accident and he might have been drunk, not recalling anything of it. Or he could just pretend he forgot, confronting wouldnt gain you that much i think.

Apparently the driver did more damage than i thought he did. you can see my right head light is pushed in leaving a gap between my headlight and bumper. I tried confronting the him, but someone said he wasn't home. Gonna try again later. You can also see white paint around the scuff marks.
