Hi TL,
As my phone contract is due for a renewal soon, I was thinking about getting a smartphone. I'm not really sure what good choices there are out there...some of the ones I was thinking about are the Droid 2, Droid X, and the Fascinate. Some of the Droids due to be released soon seem good also. (I'm on Verizon). I don't really have any huge preferences since I haven't owned a smartphone before - battery life and customizability are all I can really think of now.
Any suggestions/experiences with some of these phones? Thanks! ^^

Got the droid x since it came out. Reason I chose it was cause I didn't like the keyboard. Never had any problems. Battery life is pretty good unless running apps all day. Only con would be that that screen/phone is too big but that's personal preference though.

it's 4g, you don't have to load a custom rom for the mobile hotspot, and they are releasing a firmware upgrade soon to help with battery life

Fascinate or Galaxy s2 that will be coming out in Q3 of 2011. or iphone4 o_O

I would definitely wait. Depends on what you're looking for, but I would, at the very least, get a dual-core phone, since that implies more RAM, (sometimes) better resolution, and a slew of other features.
SGS II isn't bad, if it comes out for VZ (right now it seems like it's only AT&T though). It really depends on how long you want to wait, as the really heavy-weight (in terms of features, not actually hefty ;D) phones will be coming out Q3/4 or Q1 of the next fiscal year. Rumors of quad-core phones abound, but the main idea is to get a good android phone whose hardware will not be that obsolete in two years' time or so.

I definitely agree with the previous sentiments, if you don't need a new phone right this minute I'd wait for a couple months. There are a ton of rumors about great phones coming out later in the year, and nothing feels worse than buying a phone a month before the newer version comes out.

I got a droid pro. I love it since it has a touch screen but has a blackberry -esque keyboard for typing which I absolutely need. The screen is smaller than Droid X, but it gets the job done and overall is a really great phone.
I had the original droid but I hated the keyboard layout being so stretched. I needed a physical keyboard and the way this keyboard is laid out is perfect. I highly recommend it.
Protip: I think the verizon store will try to package in (free?) screen protectors and a phone case. A phone case is never a bad idea especially for sexy touch screen phones (I always drop my shit everywhere so a case is a must for me), but the screen protector they give you is pretty bad. It works but it sort of fuzzes up the screen, so I went ahead and shelled out some money for a decent screen protector at Seido which is spectacular. They have good cases too but the cheapie one from Verizon got the job done.
Hope you find what you're looking for.

I think I'll just wait then, thanks!

Doesn't verizon have the Nexus S? If so, I highly recommend it for the unmodded android and garanteed OS updates.

IPhone 4, jailbreak it, enjoy. I switched from a Droid incredible and I sort of miss it, but it had the worst firmware and had a lot of trouble with opening multiple programs. Overall it was slower than the iPhone but packed more functionality from the getgo. If you take some time to learn how to jailbreak I think it's worth getting an iPhone. IMO it's the best looking smartphone and theres no cheap plastic feel about it like many Droids. If youre not planning to customize your phone or delve into it's inner workings then stick with Android. I'd never recommend a stock iPhone because the way Apple has set things up is severely restrictive and any good apps cost money (most are free on open source Android market). Good luck with your search.
