I am the crusher of dreams!

>:D

Well, that is part of being an engineer, I guess! One of my friends was describing to me his ideas for technology and inventions and I explained to him why every single one of his ideas would not work. Even his only practical one was unmarketable due to the risk to the user!

I was nice about it, though! I really love logic and creativity. After all, that's why I'm an engineer (or studying to be one, rather)! I almost get off on solving problems that require creativity and logic. In fact, when I was a little kid, about 7 years old, I'd try to take apart and reassemble my toys to create new toys. Perhaps it's because my memory is skewed, but I recall coming up with some pretty awesome things!

Alright, I am not feeling very creative with my blog, I've been working too much on editing my story for my advanced fiction writing class. Thus, today I will answer ANY question you have about me or my opinions/thoughts on subjects (excluding those regarding sensitive information such as my social security, bank account number, etc).

So...

Ask away!

ok kidding.. i know this destroyer of dreams thing. I don't destroy dreams, but i destroy people who have already finished doing something. It absolutely does not matter what anyone gives me, i always find some (usually fairly small) thing that's not that good, but to fix it it's often like the whole thing needs to be redone. I don't know if that's a talent or a curse..

One of them was to have a kind of recycling that either used nanomachines or a reagent to break down anything to raw elements. I really don't think I need to explain the impracticality of that.

Another idea was to have an electric motor with contacts that don't touch in a vacuum so that the electricity arcs across the void and energy is not lost to friction. However, a vacuum by definition is a perfect insulator, so... it just can't happen! I suggested he explore ideas about heat-recycling instead.

He also bought up the idea of creating "a huge distributed computing network which we could meter out for large tasks and one of those would be a human body simulator so we could test millions of treatments on someones genetic makeup." That just is not within our technology, not even close.

Intelligent, witty, a gamer, enjoys having fun with life.

Truthfully, I'm all about personality and intellect. Sure, having a tall, handsome, ripped guy is great and all, but I fully believe brains>brawn. I want a guy that I can be happy to wake up next to in the morning. Who laughs at my bacon cream cheese croissant sandwiches and isn't disgusted when I take shots of half-n-half when I go to diners. I want someone that I can rough-house with, who won't panic when I randomly jump on them or try to wrestle with them. I want someone who respects me and gives me credit for who I am! I'm a track-star, martial artist, gamer, engineer! I want to be treated as an equal and have my ideas and opinions respected. However, I love having my opinions challenged! What some people call "arguments," I call "debates." I love when a disagreement comes up because it gives you a chance to learn so much! I want someone who gives me an intellectual challenge in conversations!

Yet, at the end of the day, I want a big pair of arms I can snuggle up in and feel safe (especially after a good romp ;D ).

Of those two? The latter.

However, I think "cloaking" is going to work best with the various light-bending materials they are considering. I have a bunch of optic fibers I picked up during my internship and I love playing with them and can easily see how they would help make something invisible.

What's your experience in studying engineering as a female? I assume it's a male-dominated domain all over the world, at least it is that way everywhere I've been to.

Is it fun or difficult being part of that minority of women? Are you taken seriously? Are you overwhelmed by advances from your male companions? Not related to your personality itself but based on you being one of the girls there.
Always smile~

Those are called Lego and we all had them.

What's your story about? What does advanced fiction entail? I've never felt like creativity could be taught, but I remember enjoying a creative writing class in high school simply because it gave me an excuse to write and a person to read my work.

Well, my school only has math/science/engineering, you can't get any humanities majors here. Thus, I feel like I am taken quite seriously at the school, especially considering it's prestige. However, I find that outside of the college, I am often met with bias that is rather annoying. It is not uncommon to have the following conversation:

"So where do you go to school?"
"Harvey Mudd College"
"Oh, interesting. I thought that was an engineering school."
"It is..."

Certainly, when I worked at my internship, I was the only female in the entire company other than the secretary, but it never really bothered me nor did I think much about it. I found I am treated with as much or more respect in the field than if I was male. As for advances from my male peers... they're are all still a bunch of geeks, I might be slightly easier to approach than a non-geek female, but they are still generally too reserved to hit on me.

Oh, then definitely the second one. carbon fiber is the material of the future, imo.

Not sure how his plan helps us really but electrons can jump from one plate to another through vacuum if the distance is short enough and the potential difference is high enough.

Except, for someone in engineering, they're not doing that with Lego, they're doing that with their SNES. They've probably known how to use a soldering iron since they could walk..... I know I did.....

Ok so I have this cool idea. It's like a website that will allow people to make their own macros and turn them into executable files that run with a hotkey control. The point of it being web based is so it can be accessed anywhere by anyone.

I figure that since macro recorders like easymacro aren't too accurate, and scripting macro software is too difficult for the common person, I'd make it very much gui based. It'd be more sophisticated and accurate than just macro recorders. I'd allow people to specify a list of instructions they want to do, including where on the screen (given pixel coordinates). Basically it's a tool that makes macros in a way that's easier than scripting, but more accurate than recorders.

It's supposed to make people be more productive, but I can see other uses for it (eg cheating in rts games). Then to help market the idea, I'll make it easy for people to tweet what macros they've created and to help share them.

Now go ahead... Just try and shoot my idea down!

I dunno, I'd be more worried about the witty requirement than the buff one. Getting ripped is easy. Learning to be witty is impossible.

Advanced fiction means the professor assumes that you know how to write a story. Overall, the class is just sort of a peer-review workshop. You write a story by a designed due date, turn it in, and then discuss it the next week. The story I am currently editing is about a girl who lives in a world where everyone has clock mechanisms instead of hearts. They don't die, but they get "reset" if their hearts stop working.

I guess I am motivated by my imagination. I find my classes often don't give me enough room to be imaginative, so it just sort of explodes in my free time. I wouldn't give up if I were you, I'd just try looking at other sources! Friends are great for helping with ideas. I love brain storming with one of my best friends.

Heh, none of my friends are imaginative, that's for sure. Not that I have many friends interested in writing to begin with. Any time I try to talk about anything they just glaze over.

It's the actual writing that gives me difficulty, though, not the ideas.

Being sort of an engineer in training (software not hardware), does it ever hurt your head less to think about concepts?

Do you have any equally nerdy and awesome female friends in the greater Orlando area?

Did you decide what you're going to dress up as for blizzcon?

Haha, it's a good idea, but would take a lot of time. Unfortunately, programming projects are some of the longest and hardest projects to predict. In fact, software projects for the government have something like a 85% failure rate.

Okay, maybe not.

*Whips out steroids and weights*

I dunno, I'd be more worried about the witty requirement than the buff one. Getting ripped is easy. Learning to be witty is impossible.

There's no buff requirement! The "big arms" just comes with being male! :'( And who doesn't enjoy a good romp?

>:D back at you!

Haha, it's a good idea, but would take a lot of time. Unfortunately, programming projects are some of the longest and hardest projects to predict. In fact, software projects for the government have something like a 85% failure rate.

Haha, yes, especially in software engineering! It's not impossible, though, and I find that it's just more developing a new way to think about situations!

Unfortunately, no females I know in Florida!

And, no, haven't decided on my Blizzcon outfit yet!

Gah, should've figured that much. I've been playing a new staff Evie off and on. Really liking the new changes though for sure. Not sure whether or not I like it more than scythe though.

Ok so feel free to steal my idea if it is good enough. I will probably write my own blog about it later since I have done several pages of notes on this. Anywho, I've been thinking of ways to make firearms more dangerous/lethal and what i've come up with is a bullet that contains a mixture of an alkali metal and kerosine. Basically upon impact the bullet will break apart exposing the highly reactive alkali metal to water or maybe air if it is reactive enough.

(note that bullet doesn't refer to the entire thing, bullet merely refers to the projectile)

pro's
+your typical 9mm bullet will travel with a momentum of about 2.77600 kg(m/s), my version of the 9mm bullet will travel with about 1.8628 kg(m/s). The stark difference is that my bullet will have some kind of chemical reaction that may close the gap as far as effectiveness of stopping power goes(unfortunately I don't know where to find measurements of the explosive potential of alkali metals).
+it weights less than the standard bullet; therefore, more ammunition could potentially be carried by a person.

con's
-from what I am aware Potassium in a pure form can only be stored safely for about 3 months or so before it becomes more unstable.
-the bullet could just explode immediately before exiting the barrel due to the sudden impact of ignited gunpowder(perhaps reverting to a ball-type powder would be better)
-mass production might prove difficult given the unstable nature of the alkali metals
-safety
-safety
-I'm like 90% sure it breaks the Geneva Convention because it almost certainly wouldn't count as a full metal jacket bullet, especially because it is meant to disintegrate after initial contact.

ok so with all that said, on a scale of one to ten, how feasible is my idea from your pessimistic point of view?

edit: i did not get the idea from left 4 dead btw. I just happen to be a well rounded sponge of knowledge.

Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, or Brad Pitt? Why?

What is your ultimate goal in life? By that I mean, what is your biggest ambition/what you want to achieve most? And I'm talking something tangible and not just happiness or success (creating a family doesn't count either).

Yeah I'm too lazy to get this project off the ground.

Lol at your thread turning into "OMG a girl!". It happens too often on TL or anywhere there's a disproportionate guy girl ratio. Take for instance sausage-fest parties or engineering. Do you like the attention?

This is just your average everyday tracer round. In any case, there are already better HE ammunition types out there, so this design is largely redundant.
