Just ran into this guy on ladder, he did this really terrible drone ling all in. http://www.sc2replayed.com/replays/174020-1v1-protoss-zerg-gutterhulk
So I asked myself wow, how did I match someone who would do such a terrible strategy. So I looked at his ranking and was shocked at what I saw.
Can someone please explain how a player who has 1 win and 19 losses gets into masters league!?! I am stumped.

Probably works at Blizzard.

High MMR from last season... You don't get promoted / demoted based on public number, its all in the hidden matchmaking rating.
|
Easily, Previous MMR + Placement match, placed him in masters league. Judging by his loses he either A. Doesn't want to be in master league or B. He's really bad.
|
Won his first placement match and lost 19 in a row? Maybe he was playing super high masters people until now.
|
his mmr is high enough... doesn't have to do with his win loss record.
he'll probably get demoted fairly shortly though if he keeps that up

It placed people based on their last season's MMR. All he needed was to have a reasonably high MMR from last season and then get (not 100% on this) one win and he would be put in Masters. I don't think a loss will place you but I'm not sure.
Once he got that win he can keep losing, and I'd think he'll get demoted eventually if he keeps it up.

Maybe he is trying to get demoted for whatever reason (offrace or something)? Although, I guess he could just leave games if wanted to do that.

Yea, if you look at the picture some of the people below him are 0 and 1. He must have been very high up to loose that many games at the bottom of masters and not get demoted.

If you started playing and got a high mmr then went inactive for the past few months until the new season started, other people have gotten a lot better than you and while your mmr stays, your skill level is not.
It's kind of what happened to me. I had a pretty good record early on then I stopped playing 1v1 and started playing some team games. Now, I have an unimpressive even record.

I'd assume it's just someone who is trying out a new race with the reset, and hasn't yet got demoted, or something?
Still, it's kinda funny to see. =P

The real question is how no one tried reading his name with swapped vowels.
Rigun = Nig_r

Swapped consonants, I think you mean. Swapped vowels would be Rugin.

Yeah, now read it backwards. edit: oh, why do I make things so complicated for no reason.

Reminds me the whole spell Worgen backwords debacle with WoW.

Look like he either came back from a break after being decently rated in Season 1, or is offracing, or both. Either way, I think (fairly) high MMR season 1 and being not as good he was is the answer.
