I'm not using internet on my phone though, it doesn't have 3gps (or umts or whatver it's called). They're quite easy to obtain, the stores (at least in Paris here) are advertising the sale of Lebara cards. Registering is simple, you can just make up an address or let the guys in the store do it for you (that's how I did it before I spoke French). My first card was an Orange prepaid btw. It cost me 15 bucks of which I had a budget of 10 euro available for calls and texts. Calls to landline and mobile were 50c/min and texts were insanely expensive too. I'm not a professional on Internet on a mobile, but for basic cheap texting and dropping calls I can only recommend Lebara. (Feel free to pm me if you got further questions)

You need an ID card (probably a passport for foreigners), and an address.

Where I work we have a lot(between 30-35) of BlackBerry smart phones provided by Telus, and I know that when our employees are travelling for work, they have a quite smaller limit in both voice and data usage, but they still have a small amount without having to switch SIM cards while travelling. From what I heard, it was something like a max of 50Mb instead of the 6Gb they usually have. It's quite small of course, but at least they are still able to use it internationally, so if I were you I'd check with your provider before spending anything on a "temporary" solution.
