You can look for shared apartments ads on smartshanghai.com Otherwise, if you have a larger budget you could look for service apartments. They're a bit pricey, but basically you have an apartment, and includes hotel room services (cleaning, changing bed sheets, some do laundry as well). Do you have any idea about the location. Shanghai is very big, so choosing the location well is crucial. Feel free to PM me if you need help to find a good location / more advice.

I've considered youth hostels, but yeah, dunno about affordability. Especially in Huangpu. Do you know if SJTU lets foreigners rent out dorm rooms?

Do you know if SJTU lets foreigners rent out dorm rooms? You'd better rent an apartment. Youth hostels are still 150 rmb per night, unless its a shitty dorm. If you negociate a 2 months stay you may get 100 rmb per night, so thats at least 3000 rmb a month. For that price you can get a 40 or 50 sqm apartment in a good location. I don't know if foreigners can rent out dorms at SJTU, but the nearest SJTU campus is in Xuhui district. Unless your office is very close to a line 1 metro station, it's gonna be annoying to get there.

I'm actually only making 100 RMB a day...I'm pretty much subsidizing this internship by myself; I just wanted to live in Shanghai for a summer while not looking like a complete lazetard on my resume. Any tips on apartments? Do they even do 10 week leases?

Any tips on apartments? Do they even do 10 week leases? Oh the Raffles is a nice place. It's only 10 mins walking from my office. It's still possible to get a 10 week lease, but it's a little harder, and you'll have to pay for the two months at the beginning of the lease. The best alternative is to find a shared apartment. There are literally thousands of students doing internships and staying just for a few months. Try here : http://www.smartshanghai.com/housing/shared-apartments/ You can get a nice room in a big flat for around 3000 rmb in the center. The advantage is that you'll have internet already installed, a maid to clean the apartment, etc. I can put you up a few nights when you arrive, the time you need to find an apartment, but not longer, my wife will not allow it haha.

My cousin will be in Shanghai until the end of June (moving back to Xi'an!...where we're from haha), so he'll be helping me out. I'm going to need a Chinese bank account, which is probably going to be impossible to get since I'm not a citizen anymore (got American citizenship three years ago). I heard Woori bank lets foreigners sign up, though, since it's a Korean bank. I'm gonna go check out the shared apartments link you posted. Thanks so much! Come with your passport, fill a form, and 15 minutes later, you have a bank account and even a debit card. Make sure you have a phone number and an address, it's mandatory to open a bank account. I assume you need a Chinese bank account to receive your internship salary. Most of the time, companies have a preferred bank partner, and they'll ask you to open an account there. And yeah we should organize a TL meetup ! Your blog is already the 3rd blog about Shanghai just this month, and during summer there are a lot of American born Chinese TLers who come to China. I already organized a few meetups last summer (WCG China finals, clubs, Azndsh), and Kaolla and I went to stalk Tossgirl at the expo, and we got to see the OSL finals too. Really a lot of fun :D
