i dont know if its a sign that ive grown up or whatever, buti was watching some stuff recently for lolz and it was so obviously fake. when i was a kid i knew they were acting but it still looked good, it was like a sport devouted to fight scenes from films, but now its just too obvious when they fake.

bad times

I stopped watching when I left India 2 years ago, mainly because it doesn't get televised here. I do know that Edge retired and afaik, John Cena isn't the same anymore (is he)?
Shawn Michaels also retired...

I haven't watched any of it lately, but I watched it pretty avidly back in the era the OP refers to. Highlights for me were the Edge/Christian/Kurt Angle faction, which provided ridiculous comedy gold later matched only by Santino Marella's antics.

People who wonder about the appeal of wrestling in general (as fans or those confused by fans) should read Roland Barthes' "The World of Wrestling", which is the first chapter in his book Mythologies, which is entirely brilliant and easy to read.
I enjoy Starcraft when I'm not too busy being dynamic and attractive.

I was a huge fan of WCW around 1997-1998 or whenever the Red NWO and Goldberg were big. Those were the days for me.

They're selling out now. They've decided to drop the wrestling and brand themselves as the WWE. They're going into debt and purchasing a huge amount of entertainment brands and companies. The aim is to start their own network soonish. They've come to the conclusion that wrestling doesn't sell anymore.

Your post is a couple of years late.

I'm cautiously optimistic that the Rock can come back and do what he does best on a regular basis. Edge leaving sucks though. As he himself says though, it's a damn good thing the extent of his damaged spine wasn't revealed during a ladder match or the like.

Man, there are sooo many parallels between Korean e-Sports and American pro wrestling. It's no surprise that some OGN/MBCGame are open WWE fans, when you see how the presentation of the leagues is influenced by pro-wrestling. One of the most direct examples was when they used Edge's entrance music as the pro-league pregame music

there are a lot of parallels now that i think about it, especially in the group ceremonies. They have the players come out to entrance music, try to get them to do crazy shit in their entrances to make a spectacle of it, and encourage rivalries between the players at group selection to create storylines for the groups.

I was just having a talk with the kids I coach the other day about how crappy wrestling is now and how much the 80s/90s owned

even though i could care less about it now, I still think the art of putting together a performance in which you do all this crazy shit and try not to cripple one another is still really interesting

While this is true, there are some key differences as well. Someone forgot to give Savior that memo.

Oh how I missed WWF. Shit was a big part of my childhood, nothing like sneaking up past 9 or 10 in elementary school to watch your favorite wrestlers kick the crap outta each other. Anyone remember the Dudley Boyz? They seem so stupid now but back then their finisher was sick. Ed Hardy too that emo guy, really good entertainer.

Indeed, they were larger-than-life characters, some menacing, some cool, some freaky, etc. To me, it's not too dissimilar to a comic or a cartoon... good drama is good drama.
