1. You're supposed to put on the E-brake anytime you park anywhere ever, lest the car rolls away on a perfectly flat surface and barrels through a church.

2. The ideal right-hand turn terrifies all citizens on the sidewalk. If you don't pull up close enough to the curb to incite feeling of impending doom on pedestrians it is a "wide turn" and you will be marked, regardless of whether you stayed in your lane or not.

3. Although the examiner will not to try trick you, she will constantly remind you during parking that you can pull out and start driving again when you're done, before you shift into park.

4. Shoulder checks are not done to check your blind spot. They're to demonstrate to the examiner that you are capable of rotating your head 720 degrees.

Hilarious post. I take it you failed your exam?

And E-brake should always be applied when parked. Have you ever tried to push a car? If not, you'll be surprised how easy it is on flat surfaces.

If you want to impress your examiner next time, use your hazardous lights. I stopped to drop some guy off at his house and put on the hazardous lights, it blew the examiner away. Told me how in like 15 years no one had ever done that.

Actually when I went to Valencia(spain) I remember nobody puts on the hand break, and people just push cars around to double park lawl

Haha. This reminds me of my first driving test, which went like this:

I pull up in a street, there's a truck blocking half of the road. I drive up to the back of the truck, and wait. About 2-3 minutes pass, which in my mind feels like half an hour, and then the examinator says 'are you just going to wait here?'.

I decide to show initiative, and pass the truck while driving on the sidewalk a little (thinking no big deal, this is what he expects me to do). Examinator starts shaking his head, and we tour around for another 10 minutes till the test is over. Everything was fine except my decision to drive over the sidewalk.

Apparantly, entrapment is entirely legal when it comes to driving tests.

Moral of the story: At times, instructors make you fail for no other reason that they think everyone should fail at least once. Driving exams have very little to do with actual driving and more with all the things you stop doing the moment you passed it.

fun fact, at least for me, on the open road section of the test you can go 15-30mph over the speed limit (50, and 35...my general speed was in the 70-75mph range) the whole time and be fine as the instructor took off all but one point for me when i did that now i drive a bit more over than that, but seriously if you get a good examiner you can do anything and pass, but if you get a bad one you need to be "by the book" the entire time or you are screwed by the smallest thing.

best of luck in the future, i just hope your not one of those people who slows everything down on the roads due to being paranoid D:

Unless it is the Westboro Baptist Church and in that case you imediately pass your exam and receive a medal. ^^

5) they pay people to act as pedestrians and try to flunk you.

On my driving test several years ago, there was one person on a sidewalk standing there. I waited a good 5 seconds and he still stood there, so I turned and immediately when I started moving he stepped off the sidewalk. Instant fail, had to take the test again.

No joke, the first time I took my driving test I failed before I even left the parking. I forgot that you had to press the brake before you can you shift into drive.

My first time... I was driving down a normal residential street. I'm driving slow and cautious and up ahead maybe 30-40 meters a squirrel darts from one side and crosses to the next. I watched it pass and thought nothing of it because it was so far from me I didn't even worry about it. At the end of the test, the examiner says:
"You made no attempt to slow down for wildlife."
I respond "What? When was this?"

Then it hits me, I think of the squirrel. Are you fucking kidding me I'm thinking....
"The squirrel, a few more seconds and you would of had him."

Stupid tool, do you realize how much a few seconds is in a car that's going 30km/hr??

Sometimes they'll do anything to dock you marks

I took my driving test in staten island, ny and I thought it was pretty easy. It was literally a 2 block drive in the middle of nowhere (very little cars and people besides for other people taking the test) and basically every intersection was a stop sign except for one traffic light.

I was super careful though. Basically did a complete stop at every light, drove at like 20mph, turned my head a awful lot to show that I wasn't just relying on mirrors, and basically never changed lanes.

I stunk up the parking because i couldn't see where the sidewalk was with the mirrors and even then i only got 6 points off. I took care not to hit the curb in any way shape or form though... which just meant i had to wiggle around the spot a lot until i got close enough to the curb (lol)

Same in Paris.

Do that to the standing car of a German and he's gonna kill you on the spot.

lol. I know that tapping the curb is instafail in california. So the most ridiculous thing is I've gotten into a bad habit of parking like a foot away from the curb. Even though I think it's way worse to park way into the street than tap a curb, CA doesn't think so.

Does the area that you live in have a reliable bus service? If yes, use it.

I learned to drive standard transmission immediately when I got my G1 (learner's permit). On my road test I learned that when stopping, you're apparently not supposed to press down the clutch until your car is just about to stop moving. I still passed though (barely). To this day, I haven't found a sufficient reason for this ("more control over the car" is bullshit, having the clutch down gets you ready to downshift if you're already too slow for a high gear)

That would be a fun hobby. I wonder if there is a testing place near where I live

Who's the chump that gave this kid a 1 star rating?

I found it quite hilarious, and actually very similar to the experience I had so long ago, haha.

I love looking back at my test whenever people bring up their horror stories. Car pulls up, I get in and sit down. The Tester was an older man, and I can barely remember what he looks like, leading me to believe that this whole thing was some kind of secret matrix-style glitch. Tester looks me in the eyes and asks me if I like "chink food".

I wasn't really sure how to respond to this, but I mumbled out some kind of affirmative. The rest of test he was rambling on with something about evangelists, I don't remember the specifics, but it was pretty damn funny. I remember genuinely wanting the test to go on longer, because the guy was hilarious.. overall the whole experience took maybe 4 minutes before he passed me, skipping most of the actual content and just checking off all of the things on his clipboard.

Supposedly the story with the place I went was that it was an upstart facility trying to pass people really easily in mass numbers for some kind of government funding bonus. I have to wonder what that guy is up to right now..

Not pressing down the clutch considerably reduces the breaking distance of the car. A car will also have zero gas usage if you're breaking from say 50mph to 0 while in second gear. So basically it saves gas AND is more safe.

Here in Belgium you fail if you don't break on the engine. Simple as that. Automatic transmission is barely used here, and if you do you exam with a car with automatic transmission and pass it, you're only allowed to drive with a car with automatic transmission. On the other hand, people who've gotten their licence with a car with manual transmission can drive both types.

Driving test can be a bitch if you have a shitty examiner, it was same with me. Failed at first even though i was driving perfectly on training hours. Made it in a 2nd run with zero mistakes :>
