Ok, so everyone knows that Tastless (Nick Plott) and Artosis (Dan Stemkoski) rule the roost so to speak. And they should, they have EARNED it. Both great players and past champions with an extensive knowledge of the game. They are by far my favorite casters to watch/listen to. They can make a mediocre game seem awesome. They get excited which gets fans excited.. Who doesn't love to hear Artosis say: "now here's the thing".. and then go on to peg exactly what the player is thinking or doing. To see just how deep their SC roots go look up the old footage of them at the 2005 wcg.
Being a caster is much more complicated than just getting fraps, a mic, and going to town. An "entertainment factor" is needed or else the fans will reject you for sure.
Here are some of my favorite casters, and hopefully the future of eSports:
DAY [9](Sean Plott (Tastless little brother)) - Pure awesome! They guy knows the game inside and out and personifies the word professional. Love to listen to this guy cast a game! Who doesn't?
djWHEAT (Marcus Graham) - I find djWHEAT to be exciting to listen to! He gets into the game hardcore. He may not be as refined as Tastosis, but put him with a regular caster and let him get comfortable I can see him being a very entertaining and informative caster!
Husky (Mike Lamond) - If you have ever searched SC2 on YouTube chances are you have run into a vid by Husky. While having an extensive knowledge of the game, he is sometimes critized for saying too much. He can speak about 2k words a minute and doesn't need to breath apparently. I personllay enjoy listening to Husky, but I wish when someone asked him a simple question he would answer with a simple one (short) sentance reply that actually pertained to the question rather than a diatribe of information that didn't relate the co casters comment. No one can deny Husky's passion. I believe as long as he continues to work at improving his casting he will become one of the best.
I have really enjoyed watching the TSL3 matches due to the casting of the above mentioned. So THANK YOU for entertaining me on a regular basis.
While I don't believe iNcontroL (Geoff Robinson) casted any of the TSL3 matches I think he did a GREAT job on the clash of the Titans match with Idra. Another one of my favorites for sure!
Side note: GSL has seen some fresh blood also (Code A temp. casters (for now)):
DOA (Erik Lonnquist) - currently in Korea started casting some GSL Code A matches. Personally I like DOA, I think he is still a bit green and has a tendency to put spoilers on twitter, but I believe he is giving an honest effort and doing his best to entertain and inform.
kellyMILKIES - A rose amongst thorns? Well, some fans say she is the "thorn" due to a bit of an accent. Other fans feel she also lacks the entertainment and information factor. I say cut her some slack. It's not easy by any means. Give her a chance. As she becomes more comfortable her casting will get better.
Who do you like / dislike as a caster and why???

Yep. Two of these threads a day.

Artosis is my favorite because his passion for the game is unrivaled. Also he has a nice voice :D

Where's the love for Chill? WTF????? CHILL BEST COMMENTATOR SINCE RAZER TSL HWAITING

Don't forget totalbiscuit

I like Tasteless and Artosis, but I remember Tasteless being funnier back in the old GOM leagues. I'm glad they're bringing in new casters to Korea so that we can get more variety. (Hearing about the tasteless build and the tasteless secret hallways is funny and all, but when its all you hear it loses its "freshness")

No Kellymilkies is the absolute best.

If you read between the lines, this blog could be a thinly veiled attack at Chill, since he praises everyone besides Chil for improving TSL, lol.

i thought the main complaint about husky was NOT that he talked too much but that he didn't have lots of knowledge about the game.

LOL you don't thank chill...Chill is the best.

Dunno how you can leave out chill from that list:/ One of the best casters if not the best and he hasn't been getting enough love recently imo.
While this TSL should have started chills inevitable takeover of the casting world it's been delayed by inane criticism of his casting apparently being to exciting. This is regrettable but don't be swayed by such nonsense and get lured into the sleepy comfort of Huskys monotonous and superficial casting, djwheats barney stinson like salesmen speech or Day9s... umm dunno really like day9 but my diluted point at this stage is just that chill is awesome and one of the few casters who has good substance in his analysis, genuine passion for the game that shines through in his casting, a good voice and excellent wit/humor.

You better give Chill his due, goddamn it!

What's this, the official Chill Fan Club? -sign me up!! Eff playing favorites, you casters out there are ballers. :D

OMG No love for Chill!?!? Chill <3<3 Amazing caster. Clear, coherent, and knows the game.

I would like to see the OP's opinion of chill. How can you critique 3 of 4 casters?
|
I've heard mostly Tastosis, Day, HD, Klazart and Husky.
For the TSL, I thought Chill sounded good, Wheat is pretty funny as well.
PainUser was dual-commentating on a recent game with HD, he sounded great too.

how do you choose just 2 casters??? i think any combo of Artosis Chill Day[9] iNcontroL and Tasteless(in abc order), i just couldn't choose. all have great voices and are extremely knowledgeable. i especially like laughing at tasteless' stupid jokes haha

Tasteless + Artosis are clearly the best at this point. They've grown on me.
TSL3's got a pretty good lineup of casters
Day9 and Wheat were good together in the latest cast. Chill's good, but he hasn't really been notable for me.
I'm not really liking Husky in TSL for the moment, as I still can't get over the mindset that he's a "casual entertaining" caster. His cast with DJWheat was pretty bad to be honest. He was much improved with Chill, and it'll be great with more "professional competitive" casts he does, particularly with people like Day9 around him. Another issue is he talks WAY too much. Maybe because he's used to casting on his own. But when he gets on those long phases, it kinda gets annoying.

Yeah I'm with you when it comes to Husky. It's not the worst thing in the world, and I like his enthusiasm / think his game knowledge is fine, but I get a bit annoyed with his 3-minute long endless runs that seem to just keep going forever. He's like the energizer-bunny caster.

My main problem with husky is the fact that in the beginning of games, and in between games, it's like his vocabulary flies out the window and all he says is "tihs is going to be epic...epicness...epic games...that epic match we just saw..." It's annoying to hear the same word so many times.

Not only is he passionate but he has extensive knowledge. He is a true student of the game.
As far as passionate tsl3 casters go it's hard to question Husky. He is very passionate. I do agree with other posters here. He is monotone, and questionable on the amount he truly knows. But he is doing his thing. I would rather hope he does better than tear him down.

So how you do feel about... say... for instance... Chill?

Since a couple people asked my opinion on chill (one stating that this post was an possible attack on chill by omitting him from my op). I will give my opinion on Chill.
First, the reason he was ommitted was because he is the only caster that I didn't have a knowledge of previous to the TSL3. Obviosly Day[9] is well known, DJ wheat I know from D9, his casting site, and twitter. Husky is famous on YouTube.
Basically, every other caster had an identity outside of team liquid.
First off, I didn't appreciate some of the language Chill used (even Day[9] had to remind him to be professional). I think Chill is a basic casual caster, and their is nothing wrong with that. I don't believe he is entertaining enough to make it outside of TL.net (YET). Obviously he has a big TL.net fan base that are bias, and they should be, Chill is their boy.
But lets be honest here. If you didn't know chill, to hear him cast you wouldn't be like "oh that guy is the best". If he was, he would be at GOM or making $$ doing vids on YouTube. From what I have been told he tried to do some web shows/casts that never panned out.
So while others have established a strong foothold in the general starcraft community, Chill seems to me a bit like the odd man out for now. He has a strong footing in the TL.net community which is a great thing. Hopefully that will allow him to improve and grant him more access to a fan base outside TL.
Personally, I look forward to seeing chill improve and by improving gain more exposure.
In closing, I feel Chill is a great ambassador for Starcraft.
Oh, and closing posts, mine or anyone's makes him a forum mod. not a bad caster.

Hahahaha, man, now you got me feeling bad. I didn't really mean to goad you into discussing something you didn't want to. I was basically just instigating shit for no good reason. And obviously we don't see eye-to-eye on Chill, which is fine, but you do get a gold star in my book for humoring even obnoxious posts like the one's I've made in your thread here.
I'll close by providing, for your consideration, my two favorite things about Chill's commentary:
1) Chill forms the opposite pole from Day[9] in the joe cool vs. nerd continuum of casters. It looks like this:
THOROUGHLY NERDY ----------------------------------------------------------------- OMG 2 COOL
|||Day[9]---Artosis--------------Husky----DjWheat-----------------------Tasteless-----------Chill|||
2) Chill is pretty hilarious when he disagrees with another caster about who is winning (and he's usually right). From Nestea vs. Goody Set 3 (a dramatic reenactment):
Husky: "Oh, damn, Goody is done for. Nestea is all up in his grill and he can't do anything about it. He's not mining, his main is forfeit, and all Nestea has to do is just keep making roaches to whittle down Goody's mech until it's gg time. It's practically gg right now."
Chill: "I don't know about that, Husky!"
