What makes me the saddest is that I am actively TRYING to enjoy SC2 as much as BW, but I just can't. I ladder in SC2 almost every day. I watch the GSL live. I watch SC2 streams. I watch every single Day9 Daily. The whole time, I'm trying to get that same feeling I got from BW because I see how successful SC2 is becoming and I want it to be good, but it's just...not.

When I win a game on ICCup, I'm ecstatic. When I first hit D+, I jumped out of my chair and did a victory dance even though I was in my uni's computer lab. In SC2, I feel nothing when I win. I just think "well, I guess my blob was bigger, time to play another". Getting Masters was a joke. I just logged on one day, lost a game then won a game, and "oh...I'm a master?". I haven't gotten nearly the same satisfaction from playing the game as I have from BW.

Then there's spectating. I regularly cast BW events, so I'm sure a lot of people know just how excited I get when there's beautiful storms or clutch reaver control. When I watch Proleague, I'm often on the edge of my seat, freaking out about how a big engagement will turn out. When I watch GSL, my reaction is usually "haha good joke Artosis...oh look his blob died, sucks for him". There's never really any tension or 'Wow' moments. Seeing a blanket of storms in SC2 isn't impressive at all because it's so easy to do.

I didn't choose my opinion... my opinion was a reaction to playing the games.

Whatever, most people don't justify the points they make,as for yourself I can understand your points but aloy of guys react to sc2 like the kt coach reacted to savior's stream.

It's hard seeing something you like so much get ripped away from you and replaced by something that you find inferior. The people who spout really poor sc2 arguments are hard to ignore. They're so clearly inccorecct (yes we all know they are trolls) yet they are part of the movement that is smothering BW.
Choose however you want... but I'm really curious what the reason is that you can find satisfaction in sc2 when so many others can't. Perhaps you have some ideas on why?

EDIT: Personally for me it feels pretty tragic. When you get introduced to the scene for the first time... there is so much exciting history to learn, and you want to be around to witness the rise of legendary players just like the tl'ers before you got to see. It didn't seem like I had enough time to really get my fill of the scene and the game before sc2 sorta changed (invalidated?) everything.
Why would I play sctoo when I can play BW?

I feel pretty much the same way.

(edit- By that I mean liking both, not wanting to punch anyone in the face ^^)

Overall I think BW is better for watching because units don't clump up as much so it's easier to see what's happening and appreciate the good micro.

On the other hand (for me) SC2 is better for playing (because of my sucky mechanics).

I play both games, i watch both games as a spectator, but I don't watch SC2 unless a zerg is playing. And I stop watching SC2 when a zerg loses. I'm such a racist fanboy when it comes to sc2. In BW, it's different. It's like a passion, I just love it.

I don't understand your problem. Two hypothetical idiots are fighting, one because he loves X and thinks Y is old and shitty, and the other thinks Y is the greatest and X takes no skill. You're sad because you like X and Y so much that you can't side with either of the idiots?

The SC2/BW argument is idiotic. People will play and enjoy whichever game they play and enjoy. Anyone who tries to tell someone that something they enjoy isn't actually as good as they think and they should enjoy something else more is a jerk and an idiot. You don't need to pick a side. Both arguments are stupid.

Good post, RawR. I'm totally with you.

I think there are more of us (people who are still involved with both games) than it might seem, you just don't really notice it because we can't take part in the "__ for life!" discussions.

I have no problem with people who greatly prefer one over the other; people are entitled to an opinion, after all. It just kind of sucks when those people forget that the decision is not so cut-and-dry for everyone. They see me defending SC2 and just assume I'm a BW hater, which I'm not at all.

Anyway, grats on 4k.

I am sad to admit that when sc2 beta came out bw pretty much died in my eyes. I havnt touched it since, and I dont watch it anymore either. BW was and still is an awesome game, and it will always have a place in my heart, but after 12 years of playing the game I had to move on. SC2 was what I needed. I just hope this new game can keep me interested for as long as the first one did.

Yeah, this is pretty much how I feel.
I'm trying SO hard to like sc2. I really am. But I just am not getting the same wonderful feelings watching it / playing sc2 when I played BW. I'm hoping this changes with the expansion pack or a few more updates, but i'm not really quite sure.

I think this is pretty natural, to be honest. I can see what you're saying in that you don't get that same feeling as when you first played BW, but that seems okay. I can't really think of a time when a sequel game felt as magical as the original.

For example, I grew up playing the Pokemon games for Game Boy. I've played some of the newer generations a little, and of course they don't have the same effect on me as they did back then. But I'm sure the kids growing up right now who are playing them think they're great.

Same with WoW. I played at release and it was fucking amazing. Expansions were really awesome and fun for a while, but never the same as the first day I ever played WoW.

So for me, at least, I don't mind if it doesn't perfectly recapture the magic of BW. I still think it's a great game and I expect it to provide similar nostalgia 10 years down the road, it will just be nostalgia of its own kind.

Just play what you want jeez. Why do you have cognitive dissonance over a video game?

Fact is BW is immortal and you don't have a thing to worry about.

As Dustin Browder himself said in an interview
Q. Many of the Brood War pros are moving. But there are still holdouts. Do you have a guess on when they will switch?

Who knows? At the end of the day, there are enough changes in Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty that not all Brood War players are going to love. Brood War was extremely tight, very well balanced and a complete experience.

It is very possible that some players, pros and fans, will look at Wings of Liberty and say “I like Brood War better”. Which is fine. Which is great!

Actually, maybe or maybe not. I don’t have enough predictive power to know what happens. The crystal ball that will know what happens are with all the players! I certainly hope that we have created a game as compelling but at the end of the day it is all up them what they think is more fun and some of these guys have been playing this game for 10 years. So that is a hard change to make for a lot of people. And there is no guarantee that they will do it. And we certainly don’t begrudge them if they don’t.

IMO, love the game you love, but don't flame and hate the game you dislike. No need to feed the fire of hate with more fire, especially since it won't be constructive in any manner.

I seriously doubt people change their opinions over internet posts, so I feel that internet arguing is essentially pointless.

I actually only got into BW after watching and playing Starcraft 2. There were a lot of people talking about how different BW was and I wanted to check it out. I did and I love the terran mech style in BW (I play protoss in SC2). I honestly find both equally as enjoyable.

I just want to say that I am incredibly biased towards BW, so bear that in mind.

I just don't see how so many people prefer Sc2 over BW,

The atmosphere, the commentary. The incredilble micro, macro that players pull off with reavers, hts, defilers or even simply zerglings is amazing to see. The commentary is just passion flowing out of koreans mouth. The fanbase is also amazing(I know this will prolly come in sc2 but until I hear girls scream whenever JD wins or Jangbi storms an entire tank line I won't think it will be as good. Not to mention the amazing amount of FAILS that come with the game.

When Sc2 came out I had high hopes, boy was I dissapoint. I love the game but I can't see why anyone would prefer the ball vs ball gameplay that is going on right now. There is no exciting micro AT ALL for me. Why?Because I compare everything to Brood war right now. Marinekingprime splitting rines to evade banelings?how cool, they have about a bucketload more mechanics and tricks like that in BW. The problem with SC2 as with Sayle is I force myself to enjoy it. But I just can't. Nothing is exciting whenever I compare it with Brood War. I applaud for the rise of E-sports but Starcraft 2 is nothing compared to Brood War for me. I do not choose to argue for BW whenever I post in the Starcraft 2 forum(however this come out alot when people talk about BW and common misconceptions and if they want to understand why we think it is such a good game).

I do not mind that people prefer Starcraft 2 over BW, I just don't understand why.

Do what I did and just give up. Even after not playing for months, playing a ZvZ with my rusty mechanics in BW was so fucking intense.

Visuals man.. -_- I can understand that to someone who never played BW before, the graphics can look somewhat dated. If sc2 didn't have the retarded trilogy marketing scheme, I still believe that it would die out and get replaced by BW somewhere down the line.

With starcraft 2,there is always hope, even though there is a lot of whining involved against blizzard, they come through for us in the end, plus if I get to annoyed with SC2,i'll just watch some good BW,because I never get games on iCCup and I get mopped on fish.

one of the few things I want at the moment is actually the ISL to be succesful.so that more people come and play on iCCup for me to play games.

I don't know how you don't get games on ICCUP, can you host? I get D+ games in like 1 minute.

its a level issue I'm only D and I can't host and my router(bob) is a retard because I portforwarding doesn't help.I get mopped by D+ and D- players immediately kick me when I join games and there are no D players left.

so right now I'm stuck to loading up a map in single player and practice build orders, learn to macro and then load up vulture micro maps, both normal(against lings) and the SkyHigh one(against goons).

by the end of today I can truly give you reasons for why I still have hope in SC2.JULY VS NADA WOOT!!!!!!

fair enough. Question : how do you think BW is going to fair over the next few years? Less pros playing and less up and coming new players?

For foreigners, I imagine most of the SC2 players will switch back to BW within 2 years. In korea, there is still lots of up and coming new players.

The expansions won't even be completely out in 2 years, and even when they are out the game is still going to be getting patched. And I have a hard time seeing north american sponsors moving back, if they weren't interested in sponsoring it before I don't see why they would pick it up later.

I play sc2/watch sc2 and also watch every bw event I can catch. I love both the games, bw is already refined and sc2 matches are evolving and getting better every day to spectate which is cool to see the difference even from games a few months ago, a lot less ball games that seem to stem from people still learning the game, and a lot more back and forth.
