Hello TeamLiquid.

I'm being tasked for my semester to compare two countries laws on a certain area.

Does anyone think their country (preferably US) handles a certain part of their legal system is handled in interesting manner, unique or troublesome manner in comparison to other systems you may have knowledge about. It doesn't have to be USA in particular, but can also be a certain states way of handling for an example death penalty. I'm going to start looking soon, but if you guys have any inspiration for me to draw upon, I'd be happy to accept your help.

My teacher has already suggested areas such as contract, tort, consumer contracts, legal concepts.

Cheers for anyone reading and I'd love to discuss law a bit more on TL if possible - Not everything needs to sensationalism news off the frontpages, indepth discussion of how different governments are run can be quite interesting as well. And this is a great place to exchange knowledge of law works in your country.

Well, just the fact that the U.S. has so many different laws for all the different states is pretty unique and troublesome in its own right. =_=

If you want something more specific, then hm... I'm not sure how it is in other countries, but divorce laws in the U.S. seem to favor women a lot more.

Also, I think the whole Singaporean thing about not being able to chew gum is kind of screwy.

The singaporean gum, while somewhat interesting, probably won't be easy to research without getting second hand research. The subject is also kind of narrow and not as as "intellectual" as what is expected from our teacher I suspect :/

An comparison on how they handle divorce in Denmark and the USA could be interesting. Is there any state where they are especially notorious for having harsh decisions in their courts?

All of them. Men get fucked in divorce, always. Well not always, but almost always.

One thing that comes to my mind is the fact than indemnities given for lawsuits of any kind in the US are WAY higher than in Europe. I don't recall why exactly that is, it think it had to do with the lower degree of social and health insurance in the US so most victims of accidents had to cover their fees themselves as opposed to the insurances in Europe. (There's some more reasons but I forgot.)

Well, America has Common Law. And juries deciding some cases, which does not exist like that in most of Europe (Germany and France definitely not).

btw, I like your name. I don't know if etymologically that fruit is linked with that profession. But it's also exactly the same in French, "avocat" is the fruit as well as the job. One of them is way cheaper and most of the time more enjoyable than the other.
Always smile~

Adversarial system -vs- Inquisitorial system in the context of court's role.
Pretty fundamental difference. (:

I think this could be an interesting way to research, and there's good reason for researching it.

I think this touches a bit too much on the system of the country instead of comparing specific laws of function in general. While it's an interesting question I think it's a bit too broad for me examine and practical cases are hard to showcase. Also the paper is maximum 10 pages as it is being written the same time as the bachelor!

Think I might examine the differences in tort and in particular differences in divorce procedure.

Cheers TL! You never let me down =)

The divorce procedures in the American system is complex and difficult to sift thru under the best of circumstances.

In order to narrow your search, why not examine the legal responsibilities assigned to each party and how divorce decisions reflect the legal expectations of each person involved in said divorce?

Men in America are believed to be the bread-winners and so often find themselves paying alimony even in cases where they were not the sole or even primary income of the family. Women tend to win custody of children more than men.

I am not familiar with Danish customs but I think that clear differences would emerge very quickly in this regard.
