I bought my first snowboard today, after renting for a season and a half. I can't wait for it to get here, so I can take it out in a few weeks! Anyone else on TL snowboard/ski?

I ski! In colorado ATM doing level one instructors exam tomorrow!

Don't know anything bout boards, but I know that there's an insane amount more comfort owning your own skis, and specifically boots, as opposed to renting, so grats on the purchase bro.

Yeah, renting is just so much more hassle, and costs a lot more in the long run. I used to spend ~$30-50 every time I had to rent. Now I just have to get my lift ticket and im good to go!
I'm east coast btw, aka ICE COAST!

Nice ! I have never heard of sierra tho. What lenght did you choose and how tall are you ? Personally I prefer shorter boards. I like the control they have but the drawback is you dont go as fast :s

The Sierra Crew is a collab between Sierra (a snowboard selling website that turned into trusnow) and Burton. It's basically a re-branded Burton Custom.

That is siiiiiick! I absolutely love green and it has been my favorite color for like 15 years now... my jaw basically dropped because its such a cool shade. Alas I have never been snowboarding, definitely high on my to-do list. Is $450 for bindings/board about average, like middle-of-the-road? Seems a little pricey but I don't know anything and guess it's good quality stuff.

I have to say congrats on the new board, I have been looking at making the leap myself to my own gear but have not yet. Do you have any useful advice from your purchase?

Also as calgar said. That shade of green is the sexiest thing ever. I might just get exactly what you got because of the design.

Thats actually pretty cheap for a board and bindings, usually good boards cost about that alone. Also yeah the green is sick, and the bindings match perfect!

I snowboard too! I love snowboarding. In the Midwest, there are no good slopes except icy hills that take literally 15-30 seconds to go down. I have the Ride Machete 158 board and Burton Cartel bindings and Burton Hail Coalition boots. I spent about 450 on the board, 210 on the bindings, 180 on the boots, and 130 on goggles (Smith Ignitor Mirror). Snowboarding/Skiing are very expensive hobbies/sports and not for someone that is going to use the board once or twice.

I have to say one thing about the Burton Missions. I bought a brand new pair of Burton Missions about 1-2 months ago and three bad things happened. The first was that the strap would not catch on the ratchet sometimes. I don't know why it was doing that but it was really scary because I thought it would come undone while I was going down a hill. Secondly, the toe strap doesn't do a very good job of holding your boot towards the back because it slips a lot and just eventually moves to the top of the boot instead of when it should be resting on the toeside. Lastly, the material isn't as durable like the Burton Cartel bindings. The ratchet is not made of a durable aluminum and that may cause problems in the long run.

I would say that if you purchased your Burton Missions at a local store, go return them and get the Burton Cartel bindings for just 10-20 bucks more. It is much better overall and a higher quality product. The feel is much better too. It's a better binding overall for only a small addition to the 200 dollar Burton Mission bindings. I strongly recommend that you switch them out, you won't regret getting the Cartel bindings. I promise.

Maybe you just had a defective pair? My friend has them, and he says nothing but good things, also all the reviews on them look great. Also the Cartel's dont match my board as nice.

Very nice. Im a snowboarder myself, been doing it for 5 winters. I had the fortune of my mom getting me a very nice board to begin with so I never had to rent anything.

Happy riding!

I find myself riding my Burton X8 a bit more though (have a pair of triads I use on both).

Congratulations on your purchase!

First of all, the mission bindings were probably defective but at the same time, the toe strap was slipping off my toe and i know that it was because of the design, not the binding.

if you are regular do 15 angles to the left on your left foot and maybe 5-10 to the right on your right foot. if you are goofy, the other way around. this allows for you to be able to get into your turns better and more smoothly.

Thanks for the help! Im going to see how the Missions are when they get here, since I ordered online. If the toe strap does move around like you said, ill probably return them for the Cartels.

Yeah. Try the Missions out. But make sure you know what the return policy is. Did you get it from the-house.com? That's a great site to purchase stuff. You can't go wrong with Cartels. They are sickkk.

No I got both from Trusnow.com, they used to be Sierra but they got bought by a different company. And the return policy says I can return them as long as they're in the original packaging, and in new condition. So might as well, see how they are before I go returning them.

Yup, im going to play around with the toe strap before I go up to the mountain to see how it is. If it seems to come off or move around to much while im not even riding, ill send them back right there, lol. Otherwise ill take em up, and see how they perform. If it slides at all when I ride ill clean'em up and ship'em back. I really want these to work though, they match so nice!

Im 5'10'' 230lbs. Do you think the 158 would be to small for my height/weight? Some of my friends said it might be too small. Thats the size I've been learning on and renting all my past times.

You might be pushing it a bit with a 158 at that size/weight but you shouldn't really have any major issues.

I myself bought a Custom Flying V (Rocker/Camber hybrid) with the cartel EST and absolutely love it!

Yeah, the EST setup is top of the line technology wise. It gives you way more feel/control/stability then traditional setups. Although they are a bit more expensive, it'd be worth the extra 30-50 dollars.

AyeH, were you using the 2011 Missions? I was doing more research on them, and it looks like they improved them a lot this year according the reviews. They added new straps ("Burton Primo Cap Strap"), more cushioning, and big improvements on the highback. I have heard a lot of bad things about the older models though, so its got me worried now.

Arn't the missions a very soft binding? I guess it really comes down to what you want to do.

NOOOOOOOOO!! I hate Flows! Im never going to use them again. I go to this one mountain near me a lot, that uses Flows on all their rentals. They are the most unresponsive, uncomfortable, pieces of garbage I've ever rode. I've used them 3-4 times, and they always give me horrible foot pains. They are quick, and easy to latch in, I'll give them that, but I usually like manually tightening the ankle and toe of my boot.

Flows are bad compared to Burton and Ride bindings.. They are nowhere near as durable and lose their snugness around the boot. I got the newest missions which were the 2011 missions. I had too many problems with it so I got the 2011 cartels. Never looked back since! you can just tell that it is a superior product from the material.

I'm from NJ, been snowboarding almost ten years now :D I hit up the Poconos a lot tooo. Jack Frost/Big Boulder has student special on Thursdays and if you go with friends, it's really easy to sneak in with only one pass because they fence off the mountain and scan to get on, then don't care about lifts so one goes in and hands the pass over the fence to another... in theory, anyway >.>

Def be careful with that toe strap. Guys in the pro shop are usually pretty chill, if you head over and let them know you got brand new bindings and you feel like somethings off, they'll take a good look at it for you

Anyone looking to buy a good snowboard, at the end of this season/the beginning of next season, all of 2010 stuff will go on crazy sale to make room for 2011 stuff, and since it's only a year old it's still top of the line.
but then I think that rain is wet, so who am I to judge?

I've got a slaloman board with burton custom bindings + boots.

Its too short for me since i grew since i bought it but its not worth buying a new board for how little i've used it. I love it, its just a bit short. Wish i could take it out to real mountains more often, there's very little in the midwest that isnt 5+ hours away

idk how far you live from giants stadium, but they have a biiiig sale at the end of the season. also, I have Scott goggles but I hate them -_- not to say all Scott goggles are bad, but this is the second pair I've broken
but then I think that rain is wet, so who am I to judge?

Whats the difference between Carving, and skidded turns? I hear these terms being thrown around everywhere, but I dont really know what they mean.

carving is when you connect the turns and skidded turns is when you sort of stop and turn. and smith makes good googles and they go well with the smith helmets too.
Is it in you?

http://www.snowboardingforum.com/tips-tricks-instructors/9651-steep-hill-carving-vs-sliding.html is good knowledge.

skidded turns are basically when you are slowing down by skidding or slipping on the snow. Carving is when you aren't slipping on the snow to slow down but keeping a very clean line, staying on edge the entire time.

My board finally came!!! It looks amazing, even better then I thought!. Cant wait to take it out this weekend! What are some good angles for all mountain riding? I have it set at 9, -9 currently, and that feels about right, but im not sure until I take it out.

Got home from the mountain a few hours ago and this board is amazing!!! Its like a hot knife in butter, it cuts through the snow with ease. I can actually feel what carving means for the first time. The bindings are super responsive, and dont seem to have any problems yet! Cant wait to take it out more, rest of this season is going to be sick!
