1) Samsung ftw. My camera broke due to a faulty component, so they shipped me a replacement that cost twice as much, is really cool, really small, and frickin awesome. Even comes with software to do that cheesy japanese style photoboothing. Epic.
2) I know one graduate from my hs who is a member here, and like 6 people in my class. o.o And one guy a year behind me. It would be awesome to all wear tl shirts or something. But then I got to thinking that on wednesday we have these lame lame lame career days, in which some sorry twit comes and talks about their profession. It would be real funny to have a semi-pro progamer come and talk about that. Wouldn't happen, but funny to talk about. Anyways, next year I figure I'll make a TLnet club for the hell of it; SC2 has expanded the popularity so much there actually is a market, and if I present it at clubfair it could be quite awesome. Just getting way ahead of myself. Not sure how to go abou it though.
3)HOLY SHIT 234 I"M A NATIONAL MERIT SEMIFINALIST WOOTWOOT. Yay. yay. Mom was like "but your'e still doing shitty in school blah blah blah" and I just didn't listen and was like woot woot :D Finished all my hw for today. Ought to prep for a DBQ but I sense an early bedtime in my future.
4) Mom keeps on threatening to not let me take the driving test which is in three days. Not sure how it will actually work out. Certainly hope I can get my license --> awesome.
5) Called a parent abuse hotline on tip from friend. They said I could file a police report cause it's bad enough, but I ended up not doing so and just talking to a counselor. They said to just ignore her, and try and be reasonable.

Basically it means he's good at taking PSATs.
Also you beat my score by more than ten points T_T

DBQ = document based question = shitty essay done in AP classes
NMSQT = test to qualify for national merit
National merit qualifies you to fill out a long ass form to get a big scholarhip. Most importantly it just looks good on apps lol.

I'm pretty sure it's only child abuse if she hits you right? Ur a pretty smart dude, dude, to get a 234!

Holy crap, 234 is friggin amazing. Congrats! I barely made National Merit by one point. Luckily, that one point has really helped making college a tad cheaper for me. Hopefully, you'll also get some awesome scholarships.

Depends on the school. Oklahoma University and Texas A&M offered me full rides just from being a National Merit finalist, though I didn't bother applying to them. Up until two years ago, the University of Texas at Austin offered a pretty nice scholarship.
Most lower-tier and quite a few mid-tier schools offer generous scholarships or even full rides for National Merit. Upper-tier and Ivy League generally offer sucky National Merit scholarships, probably because they get so many Finalists anyways.
I'm getting $2000 a year at my upper-tier school. Any scholarship is better than no scholarship.

Congratulations on becoming a Semifinalist, though the actual scholarships doesn't amount to a very large number. As a Finalist with a score of 237 on my PSAT, I received $2000 per semester, IIRC. Don't let it get to your head, either, because it doesn't take much to lose that scholarship.
Try not to let your mother get to you. Towards the latter stages of high school, a lot of Asian moms turn into slave drivers. Just tough it out until you get to college, where time away from family will do wonders.

Don't party too hard, though. Too much Proleague and GSL killed my sleep cycle and my grades. Consequently, the past winter break was not very pleasant when I came home to angry Asian parents.

Hmmm... it was 215 my year. Scraped by with a 216 .
To become a finalist: 1. You just need to take the SAT and get at least an equivalent score. I matched my PSAT score with an equivalent score of 2160 lol.
2. They send you this paper application that you need to fill out with accomplishments and stuff. You'll also need to write an essay, but that is easy to BS.
If you finished #1, you've pretty much clinched finalist status assuming you finished #2 on time. The 3% of semi-finalists who don't make finalist mainly fail because of turning in their application late.

Actually, I think I worded myself wrong. I think you'll be fine if you get at least a 2190 on the SAT, which I don't think should be too hard for you considering you got a 234.

I suppose I was lucky in that I never had overbearing Asian parents who bitch about every little thing. My parents have been divorced since elementary school, I lived with my mom; she's very free/liberal with her parenting and never made me do anything I didn't want to do. I also didn't get a single A in math the entire time I was in high school, and she was pretty much ok with it. I think it's worked out for the best, though. I don't have any unrealistic expectations of how life should work, and looking back on it, I really enjoyed my middle school/high school years, and I have an excellent relationship with my mother.
I know Asian parents have -that- mentality, but maybe you can talk to her about being more reasonable with her expectations. You're obviously bright; you don't need crazy Asian parents to reinforce that <_<.

Wow you do have crazy white parents :/
I'm currently a junior in college studying statistics and couldn't be happier. I applied to only three schools, all of which I got in, and I ended up choosing my first choice. My mom didn't pressure me to apply anywhere, but to choose schools at which I thought I'd be happy.
EDIT: I assumed you were Asian because of the Korean in the post. I just realized it's Samsung's team, but at first glance I thought it was some Korean thing I didn't understand XD

NMSQT semi-finalists are the top percentage per state. Varies from ≈200 -> ≈235 (estimates).

Wondered where the parent anger came from, seemed random for this blog. I read one of your other ones. My mom was/is a real bitch too and pulled similar shit. I remember always hearing her telling my brother how worthless I am when I wasn't even involved in the conversation. She is just a petty bitch.
anyway, if you ever need someone to bitch/talk to you can send me a PM and we can talk on AIM/Skype or something.

Getting National Merit is always a blast--the application process is going to be a good preview for what your apps are going to look like come next fall.
I have Asian parents who make me do stuff, but they don't get on me if I'm doing something right. It's good that you've founded outside help instead of trying to face everything on your own. TL can be a great place to unload sometimes.
@Club idea: Go for it! As long as you have a pretty solid network of friends already, it's easy to start a club and you'll have a bunch of initial members. I started an RTS club this year, and after getting the formalities of the interview (all of the clubs at my school have to be approved), it's been a blast. I've blogged about two of the BW lans my club has hosted already on TL.

Wow, wiki says: "Of the 1.5 million entrants, about 50,000 qualify for recognition. More than two-thirds of those qualified receive Letters of Commendation; about a third of the 50,000 become Semifinalists, about 94% of whom go on to become Finalists." so you are about top 1%; 1,2% in the worst scenario :D This is amazing
I ended up not posting my wall of text because I don't think anything useful and safe would come out of with. I don't have a degree in human relations lol, I could scare you or make you do something reckless. Only to make the relations more tense and not much else. It's really great that you called the hotline and talked to a counselor and got an advice from a real authority. I remember my own relief when I fully realized nothing was wrong with me. Now I sometimes look back and think: was that really my life?
Best of luck in the new year Unfortunately my job experience is too scarce to recommend anything (putting aside country differences). WELL I can give you a link to what jobs Manifesto7 had http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=127514¤tpage=13#252 Answer #3. I'm thinking now it is a good idea to find something and feel a bit on your own among other things. You probably will be able to get more vacation days too, once you have some seniority. Even get them in your next job.
Oh, btw. I think I read that you dislike your force fields I think I can recommend an unit tester to train that. http://www.sc2mapster.com/maps/mock-battle-unit-tester/ is my favourite, I think it still works fine.

What's that stuff about matching your SAT with your PSAT score? Do you have to take the SAT after the PSAT and match or get better on it? Also, what if (theoretically ofc) you get 240? Do you need a 2400 SAT lol? That would suck...

Man, your score should at least be worth something as a "bargaining chip", even though previous experience seems to suggest that you're not really allowed to bargain :<

Well, have you tried reasoning with her? You're bound to get a driver's licence at some point in your life, and it most convenient to get the prerequisites over with now rather than have the inconvenience of doing the test later.

Well, you don't have to get the car now. Just the licence should be fine, since you probably don't want to be doing the driving test when you're in college or out of college. I always found driver's ed and licence acquirement to be a huge hassle.

You're gonna need insurance if you're gonna drive. Getting caught without insurance is enough of a risk to cause you not to drive. And she can just secure her keys better if she doesn't trust you.

I feel sorry for you, man. Are you sure it's not impossible to reason with her? You can just ask her to confiscate your licence if she doesn't trust you. Completely skipping out on the test now could cause a lot of paperwork headaches later. It is much easier to renew a licence compared to getting a new one, IMO.
Hope everything works out alright.

This is absolutely ridiculous. Try to bring something up along the lines of "I would have expected you to have brought me up better than to steal the car." I cannot believe that your own mother has such little trust in you so as to deny your getting a driver's license. I wonder what she thinks you're going to do in college :/
I actually asked my mom why she wasn't a crazy Asian parent when I was in high school (because a lot of my Asian friends had to do extra homework or some weird shit like that) and she pretty much just said it was because she'd like to have a successful relationship with me based on mutual trust and understanding, and that she had faith that I wouldn't do anything too stupid. Maybe try to reason along the same lines with your mother? I can't envision this relationship going well, especially when she has to finally let go and let you be your own person.
|
Did you ask her why then she forced you drive even when you told her you had so little sleep you were worried you would cause a crash? And first of all, was a driver's license her idea?
|
1) yeah, she basically said that she didn't think I was tired and that I was exaggerating it? 2) No, but she keeps on forcing me to driver her everywhere even when I have work to do :/

first time i heard the DBQ (or thoguht of it) in 6 years... been long

Jesus Christ the bitch pisses me off just by reading this. First she calls you worthless piece of shit, then she goes as far as post on a facebook you shit on the floor and THEN she tells you SHE can't trust YOU? And the worst thing I have no idea what can be advised because I know how it is to live with a psycho who only accepts his points of view and only in his very own words, including fucking commas. And since I don't know them there is no way to tell how can they react and they've proven to be unpredictable by what you wrote. So, so far there seems to be no other safe way other than reasoning and ignoring like that counselor said. Unless they make you snap and fill the abuse report or suit against them. -_-
