I ran across this youtube video going over the 48 laws of robert greene. I thought they were interesting so I typed them out and I'll get the book when I have access to a library again.

These don't discount the others, though. Each one of these statements is a lesson and idea kind of like sc..easy to grasp, hard to apply.

2. Never put too much trust in friends, learn how to use enemies
How do you do this? What are some examples? I need some enemies lol

16. Use absence to increase respect and honour
I don't understand this at all.

24. Play the perfect courtier
Again, what? If you see a law and have an example of when you encountered or used it, describe it

31. Control the options: Get others to play with the cards you deal
For me, in high school, this meant if you had a car you decided where everybody went. Now it means if you can throw a party, you decide when and what. Small examples of a big idea

Number 16 means that you shouldn't make yourself too accessible. "Absence makes the heart grow fonder" comes to mind. If you're with someone every second of every day they tend to grow tired of you. If you make yourself scarce for a period of time then it's a refreshing experience for them when they see you again and they learn to value your time.

Number 24 means to use charm, wit and flattery to your advantage when talking to people. When I was a child I used to sweet talk my mom into getting what I wanted. It's a rather simplistic example but I think you get the general idea.

Very interesting list.

This is actually a really interesting list. I think some of it is great advice that everyone should follow for their own interest, while some of it is weird or negative. In any case I like the overall feeling of the list. It sounds pretty ominous.

lol. That's exactly what I was thinking.
The fellow who is out to burn things up is the counterpart of the fool who thinks he can save the world. The world needs neither to be burned up nor to be saved. The world is, we are. Transients, if we buck it; here to stay if we accept it. ~H.Miller

Some of these sound like ways to become a cult leader. Others sound like pseudo-philosophical semi-aesops (aka full of shit), but I imagine the book probably has detailed explanations of each and they only get the wax poetic titles to sound cool.

Either way these books always sound like they were written by douches and I have to wonder how many of these guys are actual psychopaths to the point where they have to construct such massive and soulless frameworks of behavior in order to interact with other people.

These are laws of power, not laws of being the most liked person in the world.

Why do you think Bobby Kotick has so much power?
I think esports is pretty nice.

rule 16

I explain it to you. Basically everyone is attracted to the rarer, more valuable things. For example girls are more attracted to you if you always seem to have something better to do.
If you give advice only rarely, it will seem more valuable.
And all is illuminated.

I really like the book because all the rules have really detailed historical examples.
Though I don't use it as a life codex, but as an amusing book to read at times.

As a scam-baiter (respond to scam emails, attempt to draw out the conversation as long as possible), I find these rules pretty applicable. The baiter doesn't have any money to send to the scammer, and yet often you see people convincing the scammers to do rather stupid things. So where does the power come from? Greene seems to have a good handle on this.
16. Use absence to increase respect and honour

There's a general rule in the baiting community to never respond more than once a day (email-wise) to a scammer. Why? Because it makes them pursue you, instead of the other way around. Every time someone emails you to ask you whether you're alright, whether you've contacted the bank, etc., in effect increases the 'complaince' and time/emotional investment the scammer has with you.

More or less, it is a restatement of the adage "absence makes the heart grow fonder".

24. Play the perfect courtier

My personal take on this rule is to make the other person appear that they are in charge, yet still be in a position to control their actions.

Applied to scam-baiting, you always want to appear compliant yet ultimately be the primary driver of the narrative. For example "I tried to do a money transfer but they say you have to provide an acceptable means of identification before it goes through!", etc.

The book itself is great. After being a bit skeptical, and thinking there's no way that everyone could follow these "laws" and not be an ass, it straight tells you it's not for everyone. A lot of people in this world get used, or looked down upon. S*** rolls down hill and so on. You don't have to "use" this book/advice to suddenly rise to the top, but to notice what is going on around you, and how you can escape being played like a fool by those who do want to control everything around them. If nothing else, the book is a great insight into how key people in history (Napoleon, Cleopatra, Musashi, noted queens and kings, emperors, ect) got to be where they are by using strategic decisions. It's a bit of a hefty read since it's half self help and half history lesson and it can be pretty dry, but after reading it I felt like it had put words and meaning to a lot of things going on around me.

After lending it to friends, each came back to me and had told me they had bought it for themselves. Some used it to try and get ahead, others used it defensively and others just wanted a good story and insight into history. Go to a library or find someone who has it and read it a bit before you knock it. You'd be surprised at how well written and useful it is, without having to use it to turn everyone around you into your little pawn.
