Warning: this is a rant.
I hate Windows 7. Seriously.
If you read my post on Technical Support you'd know that I was considering changing my Windows XP to Windows 7 due to iTunes issues. Well, today is boxing day so I decided today is the time.
The irony is that my frustration with Windows 7 began before it even finished installing. It turned out (at least according to my googling) that Windows 7 installation will get stuck at "Completing installation...". Some of the remedies include some highly non-standard procedures such as removing all USB devices and all but 2gb of RAM (there was no way I could have anticipated it).
As I am writing this I am staring at the still image on my monitor screen (it's one hour), regretting all the time and effort I spent on this stupid piece of crap. I have a feeling that I won't get along with it in the future, either.
Sigh~~~ Good job Microsoft.

Itunes is the problem... not windows 7

I'm not quite sure if your problem got fixed or not (it's unclear from the blog), but I had this exact same problem on a computer a week ago, and went through the same sources trying to find an answer.
Removing the USB devices did not work for me. Removing ALL unnecessary hardware (including the graphics card, relying on the onboard) did work however.
I remember noticing that the fix was successful very soon after it reached the place where it normally got stuck, but I can't remember how. Still, don't wait 30 minutes between attempts. If it's not doing something after 10 minutes, your attempt didn't work.
Also, I've been using Windows 7 on my main computer since it came out, and it's an amazing improvement on XP. The upgrade is similar to the 98 -> XP upgrade for me. Unlike the 98 -> XP upgrade though, the Win7 upgrade focuses on tons of small improvements rather than one or two major ones (like drivers for XP). I don't think I can live without Win7 anymore
Anyway, hope that helps.

I love Windows 7. It sucks that you've gone through so much trouble with W7, but you're probably a very unique case...

so far no problems with windows 7

If this werent be a blog i would've hoped you get banned for this. Such a ignorant wrong post..... Just because YOU have problems with it, which may be related to some hardware errors or anything else on YOUR side it doesnt mean its microsofts fault.
Millions of people have been installing and working with windows 7 perfectly fine. I just installed it myself 1 week ago. NO problems at all. 4gb ram. several usb devices plugged in (charging cable for mobile phone, usb hub, usb stick, webcam).
Please please please dont act like this happens with every windows 7 out there and microsoft is 100% guilty for it. Because the main problem is you. This feeling is increased because you also have "issues" with itunes on XP..... But thats also microsofts fault i guess, right?
sorry about the harsh "counter-rant" but i just hate people who blindly bash on others because they cant get their stuff working, which is 90% their own fault.

I think i've installed Windows 7 atleast 30 times now, never had any issues. To me this is certainly the best Windows so far.

this thread is now about how much everyone loves windows 7...

Yea I have read all of these already. The problem is whether or not I should stop my installation (hard reboot) and do all of the things you said... or just wait. I am fine leaving it overnight.

I am pretty sure I am not the only one having this problem. Some quick googling will make you realize that a lot of people suffer from it.
I don't see how the problem has to do with me. I have very little control over the installation process. I put in the DVD, choose the drive (pre-formated), click OK, and the installation runs. I seriously don't see how it can be my fault. As for the iTunes, I used to use 64 bits Windows XP and Apple only supports 32 bits Windows XP. No, that's not Microsoft's fault - that's Apple's fault. I even tried to tweak the iTunes installer to bypass their version check and that didn't work for me either.

Well, at least you don't have a mac. You probably would've had to buy another overpriced computer just to upgrade the OS (and a shitty one at that). Be glad that Windows gives you the option of upgrading your computers.
My parents have a mac, and I always get frustrated with the restrictiveness of the operating system. A lot of times, problems aren't even fixable because of how ridiculously restrictive apple is and this leads to dead ends where you're stuck with a brick of a computer. Windows, on the other hand, allows you to do pretty much anything and thus you can usually fix your issue even if it takes more computer know-how and time.

I'm pretty sure that's why I use Linux now. Hahaha~~~
But yea, I need to stop being angry and tackle on the problem.

Windows 7 is amazing. Sorry you are having trouble with the installation. I can look up some solutions with my experts exchange account if you'd like. Let me know.

This is a huge blunder by Microsoft, because their main policy and the reason why they are so big, is backwards compatibility.

i wish i had win7

OK.
I think it might be my gforce graphic card. My mobo does not have integrated graphic so there isn't much I can do there.
I guess what I will do is that I will try to either 1) plug my harddrive into my laptop (which uses ATI; hopefully that's OK) and install it there or 2) switch my harddrive with someone else's desktop.

Try some patience. My install "froze" at that screen and I started googling. But then eventually it finished. It may take several hours at that screen.
As for removing all usb devices and leaving 2gb of RAM, that is a pretty standard procedure, similar to "safe mode." It's meant to help you so that you can isolate the problem if there really is one. For example, I was getting a bunch of crashes on my Windows 7 computer, until I figured it out it was poor wireless card drivers, which I updated to solve the problem - I had thought it was a video card issue!
I know you are probably really stressed out from trying to get your new computer stuff going, because I really was, but I bet it will end up working out and you will feel great about it then.

Windows 7 is awesome, it has one flaw and that is its lack of support for Brood War.
Sorry to hear about your install problems, but OS installation issues is hardly exclusive to Windows 7

you probably have your harddrives set to SATA (which i don't think w7 supports out the box) instead of legacy IDE
|
Microsoft released the figures for the cause of the majority of crashes in windows and nvidia graphics drivers where the main culprit above all. Not that nvidia cards are bad but its usually 3rd party drivers/badly tested hardware that messup rather then the OS.

Windows 7 is the best OS microsoft has made which isn't necessarily saying much. But it is excellent.

Do you realize that there has been a working DirectDraw fix for BW for a long time? And also you can't expect a modern OS to work perfectly with DirectDraw games.

I love Windows 7

I clicked this blog expecting a detailed discussion of the drawbacks of windows 7 (which I haven't gotten yet, but am considering) and so far the biggest problem mentioned is that it froze during installation for some guy.
This is actually making it sound pretty promising.

Windows 7 has no problems installing directly to a SATA HDD, and I'm not sure why you think it would.

You can use VirtualPC which you can download free from MS and install WinXP or w/e in a virtual environment and play BW fine. I played BW fine in Win7 since Win7 RC until SC2 came out.

That free thing from MS never worked for me because it always complained it didn't have full screen exclusive mode support. VMWare works fine though.
Did you have to do anything special to make it work?

This, or a variety of other factors (like my graphic card) could be the problem.
At the end I still don't know, unfortunately. I took out my harddrive, inserted into my laptop, and installed Windows 7 that way.
It worked.
Afterwards I put it back to my desktop, installed all of the drivers, and I think at this time it should work smoothly.
Thank god.
It still grinds my harddrive, though. Even though I turned off indexing and defrag already. O well...

I love Windows 7! It is easily the best OS to date. Of course it's annoying that BW goes to hell on Windows 7 (at least for me and thousands of other people on this forum). But for me, since I play SC2 now, I wouldn't use anything else. It's awesome :D

I didn't do much to make it work other then write a batch file to kill explorer(so colours don't mess up) and set it's processor affinity to a single core.
The Virtual PC used to complain I needed a compatible CPU but they updated it so it doesn't. Though I played BW through Win7 directly, was only getting VirtualPC for even older games nostalgia trip.

Haven't had any problems with Windows 7, definitely has been the best version of Windows so far for me (since Windows 3.11 too). Performance wise it's far better than Vista, and much more pleasant and stable than XP.

I have BW on my windows 7 computer, and besides the water color problems it plays perfectly fine for me. I can stand some graphical oddities playing a 10 year old game.
|
I have loved windows 7 so far... wouldnt use anything else tbh.
|
windows 7 is pretty good if you ask me.

I love Windows 7, don't be hatin, we all have to deal with technical issues with everything. I spent a couple hours yesterday figuring out how to modify an ini file so that mass effect 2 wouldn't crash on start up, because the devs figured they'd put in some terrible mouse settings and a bad command binding. Ended up needed a user made editor, but all is well. And getting X-wing and Tie-fighter to work took FOREVER. I hope you find a solution to your problem, there is nearly always a fix.
EDIT: I got BW to run without the colour problems. I go into task manager, close the explorer.exe (desktop program) process, and start the starcraft exe through the run command. Once I'm done, use run command to restart the explorer.exe. Hope this helps people. EDIT: Same as batch solution above, but less convenient.

I had a good laugh by watching this thread go opposite direction of what OP intended. I think the hollywood needs to make a new movie called 'Everybody loves Seven'.

Yeah I could get games like Castle of the Winds to work but SC wouldn't launch because it needed full screen exclusive mode. Might try again after those updates because it was quite some time ago I gave it a shot.
Dunno why but my W7 hates BW with a passion. I can only get it to work with DDHack which doesn't let me log onto battle.net to have BGH funtimes or strip aerith :~(
