Wrong. Asian parents don't know how unimportant education is. I know a person right now, dropped out of high school, making millions. Other people I know barley getting passed high school with C's making 200k a year. Want to know the best part? They enjoy their life.

Statistically the vast majority of people that drop out of school are not as lucky. Education is very important.

Furthermore the vast majority of people that are successful but dropped out of school are self-educated anyways, instead of working really hard in school they worked really hard outside of school.

What I'm trying to say is that high school/college w/e has no impact on how successful you can be in life.

Errr... Would you like to look at statistical earning rates of graduates vs none graduates? No, it doesn't have an impact on how succesful you CAN be but it does have an impact on how succesful you are LIKELY to be.

Actually, it definitely does. The point of schools is to prepare you for success in life. Otherwise, I fail to see why anyone would attend school at all. High/college CAN end up having zero impact on your future, but most of the time, it's still an important step in your life.

[Not] Getting into a famous/prestigious college may very well have no effect on you, but most of the time, they will prepare you very well. Even if they don't, and you consider a degree immaterial, almost everyone takes it as qualification, and it will help you get a job (which, of course, is desirable).

But you can only study brotology on the streets yo.

That's the American Dream, etc., but the truth is that almost all of the time (for our purposes, it's practically a probability of 1), things don't work out that way...I don't want to call you naive, but the stories you hear about rags-to-riches are the exception, not the norm. Again, you do not need a degree to enjoy life and/or become rich, but it's accepted that such a degree will aid you significantly in your life. I kid you not.

Here's a crappy but somewhat passable analogy: your home is is danger of being burglarized by a dangerous-looking man. Would you rather have Froadac or Kennigit protect you? The former is a scrawny white kid (hi, don't take it personally...really) and the latter is some beastly army(? or was it the marines or something) dude who's "certified" in that he went through years of training and fighting. The same applies to life: you're out a world that very much wants to mug you and leave you for dead if you're unprepared--do you want an education that might pass (I don't know, maybe Froadac will befriend the burglar or something) or a solid, dependable one that will tear through some shit?

OR you could just be successfully trolling me :/

No, you need luck. For every person that succeeds this way there are countless others who fail. What makes you think you are special and can make it where so many others fail? You are one out of 6.7 billion people in the world. You are not the smartest, the hardest working, the luckiest, etc.

If you want to take a big risk and go for the gold without getting that fancy degree, you can do it. By all means, try - it is possible. But I'll place my bets against you and we'll see who's laughing at the end.

What is your point...

1) They are top 200
2) They are enjoying themselves

where is the down side? Also, if these people are in top 200 and have made all-in powers, then that would mean they focused on micro rather then macro. They have skills, but not those that most others focus on... they win more games simply because each one of their units are worth more than others.

You cannot get to the top with no work and knowledge, it jut depends on where you apply it...

Someone who drops out of highschool to start their own business still has to do TONNES of work, it just means they apply it towards starting their business rather then during drama class.

Someone who get C's in university but still networks and ends up with a great job they love making a lot of money... well they took time to meet with people rather then study for 10 - 20 extra hours per test.

Hell, even take someone who didn't go to school and was just given a $500k/year job for example (never would happen but hey...) they still need to be able to do the job, need to do work in the job, and as such apply their time in a different way.

In Sc2, someone might focus on macro, someone else on build orders, someone else on micro, someone else on timing attacks... they might suck in different areas, but as long as they are world class in at least one area of the game they can be a pro-gamer. Most people might focus on macro but you can get to the top focusing on other things...

I think the issue with the SC2 analogy is that you can quite easily cheese your way to "success" and enjoy the game, whereas in life, it's much more difficult to advance without adequate preparation.

A better comparison (à mon avis) would be never ever practicing macro or having abysmal apm (truly low--getting by well with somewhat low apm is still quite possible) because one is too lazy, and still getting into top 200. That's a much, much more difficult task, just as it is in life without a degree (i.e. working hard in school).

The thread sort of got derailed .__.

Honestly, what's the most important thing about college in my opinion is the transition from living at home to living by yourself, the social skills you learn from interacting with other students, and the networking. The classes teach you stuff, sure, but it's really the other aspects of college that are going to make you successful in life. It's those reasons why college is so important, not because you get to take more classes.

Also, Inc... dude... why?

It sounds easy on paper (just print out a list of grievances and try to explain in as calm a manner as possible...or just let the text do the explanation), but I don't think it will be that easy...one cannot expect to hand a piece of paper to one's parents and expect a simple solution. In all likelihood, unless the letter is written masterfully, his parents seem liable to just reject it/read it and disregard it/become angry due to imagined impudence/etc. Obviously the system right now isn't working out, so something should be done about it.....!

Hey--whatever you do, think it through first (I know you know, but just reiterating ><).

It doesn't get much better sorry . I'm finally a senior in college about to graduate, and it's finally better. Trust me when i say getting a B isn't going to ruin your chances of getting a job or getting into a good college.

Actually I'm kind of reading through your punishment of "reduced computer time," and working/studying all day, and it actually kind of makes me laugh, sorry. My parents took away all form of electronics from me from when I was 8 to 14. They thought that it was causing, and this is 100% verbatim, "my personality to become evil." Also when we did get a computer in high school, they password protected it and didn't give me the password, I had to ask them to type it in when I wanted it. Also my mom made me write essays, just because. She'd go through books of SAT writing prompts, make me write an essay, and if it was bad, she'd crumple it up and tell me to do it over. Just a couple of examples of my life in high school.

Oh and also on an Asian note, if I ever tried to leave the house during a lecture, they'd have beat me. Plain and simple.

So....actually I don't really have that much sympathy for you, again sorry. But I do know where you're coming from. Just know that it's not that uncommon.

Oh and I got A's in math too.

Such a pro

I didn't have much computer access til I was 13 either, so... Also, I had similar SAT experiences, but now thatm y score is really really good

So does Geoff have a problem against asians or does he just find his jokes that generally belittle an entire race to be so funny as to beat the dead horse until it turns into elmer's glue.

I think everyone in the world could make their parents seem like the worst people in existence if they just quoted a few instances they were unreasonable or did something particularly thoughtless. For every essay she made you write and that she crumpled up because you were a kid and didn't want to do it properly, how many more juice-boxes did she bring you when you were a little tyke? :O

I wonder if people find it equally offensive that kids born on a farm (even white ones!) have to do several hours of work (that is far less self-interested than studying). Well, I suppose at least they get winter break
