I've never worked retail. Even though I have passed basic calculus fairly easily I am always afraid if I worked retail I'd fuck up the basic math all the time.

A woman drove back to the supermarket I work at to return $40 I had mistakenly given her. She saved my job. Just think about that next time you're in a situation like that.

Having known people who work cashiers, some do get tons of shit for screwing up change.

Getting given extra change is almost as good as getting away with pulling the vines off the fancy tomatoes so you only get charged for regular ones. Makes me happy.
That's why I beat you almost half the time!

If you notice it right on the spot, I would certainly give it back.

But if I notice it latter the amount of extra change I got exceeds the transportation costs/value of my time it would require to take it back, I would just shrug and move on.

If I notice it right when it happens I give it back, but if it happened at a gas station 60 miles out that I stopped at on my home, then I won't go out of my way to drive back to return it. But as long as it's not too out of the way I always return it =]

I bought a 2k laptop from lenovo via paypal, and noticed they only billed my paypal (linked to my bank account) like 50 dollars as sort of a seed payment or something? Either way a few weeks went by and they never charged me the 2k. Eventually I mentioned it on their forums and that day I saw the 2k billed from my account, lol

Interesting that some people would prefer not to give back the money as the sums became larger. Wouldn't the particular person who made the mistake be in bigger trouble as the sums get bigger? Hence, the original motivation of helping that person to avoid being put in a bad position doesn't really make logical sense fore me.

I always give it back... that couple of bucks isn't going to make any difference... btu if you asked me if there was a briefcase of money on the ground, would I take it. Then the answer is hell yeah... despite the obvious risk of a mafia hit. That sort of money is game-changing...

Just give it back, usually its like 25 cents or something, which won't help you, but might get them fired. Be nice to people and give it back.

As the benefits get bigger, people's superficial values crumble. The same happens when the potential negative consequences are reduced, or when the victim is abstract. There's also the issue of helping the other person rather than helping yourself. It's all about tipping the balances. File sharing, corporate crime, etc. deal with the same moral dilemma.

If I notice it on the spot, I'll gladly pick the extra dollar or something from my hand and correct their error, but if I've already left, I'm not gonna go back in. A lot of people get their first jobs in retail so they understand the horribleness that is, cashing out above/below the expected.

Same here. Normative ethics can bite me.

One bartender kept giving me the wrong change. I'd give her like $5 to pay for my drink and she'd give me $15 back. Maybe did it on purpose so I'd tip her, maybe it's because she mistook my $5 for a $20 every time, or maybe it was because she had the hots for me (obvious answer ). Regardless, I could have made money at the bar for once if I kept it all.

During black Friday shopping, I bought a $315 laptop. The cashier thought I gave him 4x100 instead of 3x100 + 1x20. Needless to say, that was a large amount of extra change. He's the catch though. A lot of people argue that such a big electronics store could take a hit, but when the cashier thanked me for giving the money back, he said "I would have lost my job".

I'll give the money back if I notice, the problem is I never notice, I just shove my change in my pocket and go on my merry way... people could be giving me too much, or too little and I wouldn't really care, I only count my bills. For change, well it really doesn't matter to me if I don't get my change back, but ya, that's just me I guess.
