Chinese TV series for learning

Since there's quite a lot of TLnetters with a Chinese background I figured it would be a good place to ask.

Basically I'm looking for TV series that would be:
- In Mandarin
- Centered around our daily lives. I'm not really interested about learning how to say goblin or greatsword in Chinese for now. Politics and economy and the like can wait too. :p

I know around 1500 characters and have an HSK lvl 4 (for what it's worth). I live in Beijing so in case I don't find the TV series online I can just go out and buy the DVDs.

I was thinking about starting with Hi my sweetheart, it seems quite light-hearted and the dual subtitles are awesome (simplified would be better but traditional is ok too, I used to learn both).

If you know some nice books that's fine too. I already read Chinese manuals quite a lot every day so I'd rather watch TV series but I'd love to have one or two good books at the ready for when I need them.

TL hwaiting~!

I recently watched Love or Bread, I thought it was pretty good. It Started With a Kiss is a classic, and if you haven't seen Meteor Garden, that's decent as well (and actually, more of a classic).

Hi my sweetheart is not worth it... no matter how cute of a couple Alan Luo and Rainie Yang make.

I can remember two popular Chinese TV series that were popular in Thailand: the Monkey King and Bao Ching Tien

Really? I loved Hi My Sweetheart! So cute!

I watched some others dramas but they got pretty boring, but I think Hi My Sweetheart is definitely worth it!

I'd love watching historical dramas, but I'm worried that they won't be as useful to me as contemporary dramas since they won't involve a lot of situations related to our modern life.

I think it might be better for me to begin with one of the contemporary dramas listed here and keep the historical ones for when I feel comfortable with my daily Chinese (might take a year or more though T_T). Or for when I feel fed up with failed romances and broken hearts. Whichever comes first. -_-

I'll try a few of them this week-end. Right now it's crunch time I've got an exam on thursday and I've slacked for the past 2 weeks. :d

some recs from Taiwan

StarLit - 心星的淚光
Corner with Love - 轉角*遇到愛
Prince Who Turns into a Frog - 王子變青蛙
Fated to Love You - 命中注定我愛你

these were pretty big and a lot of people liked them, so they shouldn't be hard to find

though dramas about real life are inevitably some contrived love stories...I can't stand them personally

you can go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiwanese_drama and read plot summaries, etc.

I'm in the same boat you're in, although my mandarin probably isn't as good. I keep asking my Chinese friends and they keep telling me there are no good mainland dramas T_T

I've seen some good Taiwanese and HK dramas, but I really want to hear more of the mainland accent. Not to mention I can't really read traditional...

HK dramas are awesome^^ But if you're looking for something originally in Mandarin and not Cantonese/dubbed Mandarin, then My Queen (Bai Quan Nu Wang) is really good.

Shi Bing Tu Ji.

This was a pretty good Mainlander drama. Pretty inspiring really and much much much better than those Taiwan garbage.

Historical dramas are a good insight into Chinese philosophy especially the authoritarian nature of the society. Unfortunately a good mandarin is a pre-requiste to fully appreciate them.

I asked a teacher this morning and he basically told me to stay the fuck away from taiwanese dramas because even if their mandarin sounds pretty standard to me it really isn't, haha. I guess I'll start with one of the aforementioned mainland modern dramas.

My parents love this series! I've watched it a few episodes as well, and I would say it is solid. It contains many terms from everyday life, which is what the OP is looking for.

西游记 is a bit old but quite nice ! How can you live in China without knowing about it haha.
But you need to like monkeys and pigs. I know around 1300 characters and can understand it quite well.

I don't really see the point of forcing yourself to watch shitty TV series (sorry but all chinese TV series are horrible), while you are living in China and could practice a lot more efficiently by simply speaking to people around you.
The hardest part is to make sentences and express yourself, watching TV series is not the best way to learn how to communicate. I'm sure you have some chinese friends, speak chinese with them, and ask them to correct you when you make mistakes.

I already have daily lessons at the uni and my gf is chinese so I get plenty of practice. This is just for when I feel lazy and just want to relax on my couch watching some TV. :D

Of course if all chinese TV series are horrible it'll be an issue. I'm not that hard to please though, so we'll see.

I'll probably try Dwelling Narrowness this week-end.

It's like British English and American English. We hate how each other pronounce things and call our own standard.

Have you given some thoughts into watching talk shows?

You can watch Devil Beside You, also starred by the same actress in Hi My Sweetheart..

anyway, if u want to improve greatly on ur chinese, i'll suggest watching the daily dramas first before getting into these taiwanese dramas, since these taiwanese dramas tends to use certain phrases/words differently, and are sometimes not really a right word in the first place..
