So this is something I learnt in 2nd year of university...

I was taking a biology course with an amazingly cool professor that talked to us about this special plant called "Mother of Thousands".
Now, vaguely intertwined into our reproduction unit, the mother of thousands gives birth to new plants not by seeds or spores of pollen but rather the ends of the leaves spawn thousands of tiny replica plants complete with tiny roots, leaves, the works.

Naturally, we were all enthralled... and he ended up bringing in all the tiny plants that his personal one spawned and handed them out at a lecture. I was lucky enough to get one and promptly planted it.

Months later it was a nice looking mature plant with the buds of these tiny plants of its own. They had started to fall off and pepper my desk with little green confetti.

One day, I was sitting down to a salad, looking at the abundance of greenery around me... and the thought occurred to me... it would really be a cool aesthetic touch to a salad to have tiny plants in it, right?

So I pop one into my mouth... "Oooo... crunchy"

I pop another one into my mouth... "Oooooo.... refreshing"

It was fuckin delicious!!! One of the best tasting plants I've eaten to date.

So I harvest about half the damn plant... cover it in zesty italian and scarf it down, lovin every bite.

It's only about 5 minutes after I finish the bowl of salad that it occurs to me... "You know... it's a tropical plant... how do I know it's edible?"

My heart starts palpating, and I rush to the worlds source for quick info... wikipedia

If you follow the link, you might notice (as I did) that this is in the first paragraph:

All parts of the plant are poisonous, which can even be fatal if ingested by infants or small pets.

Ahahaha... FUCKKKK

Don't know what to do... I ate a fuckload of this plant... so I ring up poison control and they look up the toxicity of the plant.

A couple of nerve-wracking minutes later and I find out that I didn't ingest enough to warrant immediate action, and the toxic properties of the plant were slow coming, so there's plenty of time to react if anything happens.

I skull 4-5 glasses of water and lie down, since the poison affects the heart, so resting will delay the effects. I had the phone by my side the whole time and just tried to relax.

In about 30 minutes, my heart gave a flutter that had me gasping and grabbing for the phone, but it was short lived and I didn't end up dialing 911. I had one more, that almost made me dial, but it died down pretty quick too. After that I was fine, with not apparent side effects, other than the scarring memory.

The point is... don't eat houseplants... no matter how cool they look or good they taste...

wow lol I can't believe you just started scarfing it down without a second thought. maybe i'm particularly paranoid about eating random plants (when I was in peru recently, my friends started eating every berry they came across in the amazon but I refused).

You know what's even better... under the wikipedia article it says that its a type of 'succulent' plant... which has some specific scientific meaning, but I tell you... it was damn succulent. Almost worth it...

glad you're okay. Nature is indeed a cruel mistress. Take bears, for example, so cute, so deadly... it's just not fair, is it?
but then I think that rain is wet, so who am I to judge?

Hey man, look on the bright side. You're one of few people who'd actually know what that plant tastes like. xD

Would have been hella scary to go through. But you did, and now you've got a pretty cool story to tell. =)

Damn, bro...

That's quite a scary story.

I'm glad you're okay. Don't die on us, meeple.

In other news.. does that plant reproduce like wildfire?

Heh... thanks!

And yes the plant reproduces pretty quick. In it's natural habitat it needs to compete with tons of other shit, but if you eliminate those, you'll have tons of the things before long.

I would never consider eating any of my house plants. Mine doesn't look very appetizing.

You're a damn beast, think about it.. that's one of the manliest things you've done in your lifetime.. it's like that live-octopus that get's eaten by koreans for the sake of manliest shit.

good thing nothing much happened to you..

I wanna ask mother nature, why are the most delicious stuff has to be either bad for the health or poisonous?

Haha, this sounds like something i would do. Taste something, like it and eat it without considering if it is edible or not ^^

Don't know how you managed that, I'd be freaking out. At least you got a good story (and a good meal) out of it =)

FYI: A succulent plant is a plant that can survive in dry, arid or salty conditions by storing excess water in its tissue, like a cactus

Ah I guess I didn't give a good description of the actual taste. But the really lovely thing about it was the texture. Every tiny plant was like a little crunchy burst of water. It was just slightly sweet, definitely not bitter in any way... and the aftertaste reminded me slightly of celery, but not exactly. It's hard to explain but thats about the best I can put it...

I guess you jipped the grim reaper good this time.
