PRINCIPLE 2
Show respect for the other person’s opinions.
Never say, "You're wrong."

These are some principals from "how to win friends and influence people", a good book. You said you were in a yelling match with your boss? big no-no. you have to make him feel important and then admit any faults in your own self even if its half made up. he wants to prove his authority over you. then you have to explain to him why it would be a negative thing for his wallet to keep doing things the way he is.

There's a difference between an opinion like "BW > SC2" - "You're wrong" and "The sky is made out of potatoes" - "You're wrong".

I told him he was wrong because he was stating things as facts when he understands neither the system nor most of the words he's using (he calls variables "shelves").

Suck it up, dude. I am sure you get paid more than minimum wage.

Yes, I do. But I don't get paid enough. I'm the sole developer on this project, which will (when complete) earn this company millions of dollars. I'm not going to see any of that, and the amount of stress by boss puts on me could kill a herd of elephants. At this point I actually wouldn't mind working at McDonalds. At least I'd get free fries.

As far as I know, you don't get free fries.

... You dont =(

I know your pain very well, but instead of codes like PHP and such, I am a network tech for a huge multinational company and they like to do the same thing with us. What they do here though is decide that it is code freeze, no changes to codes or networking until the end of the year...then they decide to move everything around in the building and make us make things work when...oh my, they are now on the wrong friggin' network segments and vlans! Normally, this is an easy change by reconfiguring the vlans on the switches, but not during freeze! During freeze in order to get changes approved you have to go through a log process of writing out every single step and why it is needed. THEN you have to explain on a concall with high-up managers everything that you just wrote down, only then under most cases to have it denied because why...it is freeze!

Then the next step is to tell managers why their stuff does not work and why we cannot make it work in plain English. Then we get chewed out and we have to remind them why all of these changes were REQUIRED before freeze started but EVERY YEAR it is the same routine and they NEVER have their stuff submitted before freeze.

I have been doing this for a few years now and it is the same...no matter how many times you tell them...oh well.
We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery, we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost. -Charlie Chaplin

Eh... ineffective bosses are something you always have to deal with... I suggest apathy. If you don't care about your boss, being yelled at for it is much less psychologically damaging.

lol damn commies! I'd suggest finding another job if the money isn't way more than you would earn elsewhere. Otherwise just suck it up while you get financially ahead for a bit.

This. Being able to laugh at my circumstances really helped me cope with how ridiculous my boss and coworkers were in my previous job.

Talked to a guy from one of the agencies that keeps calling me (okay, I actually registered with this one). Permanent position available closer to my home at a better salary. I might have a phone screening tomorrow for it, so hurray!

Well, this could be an ideal resolution.

Be careful about describing why you are leaving your current job. I've conducted a couple job interviews, and when the interviewee says he's quitting his job because his boss was unreasonable or the work was too demanding, it's kind of a red flag imo. Could be totally legit, could be a lazy worker, impossible to tell from hearing one side of the story.

Agreed 100%. In fact, I would avoid talking about your boss as much as possible. Talking smack about someone, anyone -- especially your former employers -- is really unprofessional. (Burning bridges is also very unprofessional)

If they press the issue and specifically ask about your former boss, yeah you might say he had time management issues, BUT -- you were able to learn from that by figuring out how to manage expectations by setting appropriate deadlines, project update meetings, etc. (shows you turn negatives into positives)

Dunno if you're a programmer or not, but 1,000 lines of code is more than just 1,000 lines of code. See spoiler for example, this is actually a "3d" flight simulator written in C. It requires some arguments to compile, check the wikipedia entry for IOCCC if you want more info.
