Alright lets see you have the choice of
Counter-Strike either 1.6 or Source. Counter-strike has to be noob-friendly until you start joining the competitive scene.
TF2 has a huge competitive scene so you might want to try that out
Call of duty. All the teams is pretty much hype up for BlackOps. As for COD4 its still has a competitive scene but its slowly dying because theres just not enough teams.
I actually played a bit of competitive combat arms its pretty much 4v4 Search and Destroy, Team Deathmatch(Elimination) and Deathmatch(Elimination Pro). Just pm me if you have anymore questions.

Definitely Counter-Strike, TF2 has enough of an SC-style distinction (pubs vs. pros, matchups, etc.)

Combat Arms no. I really think a lot of the good Combat Arms people moved on to AVA because CA is full of hackers these days imho.

Quake yes, especially repeat especially if you live in Dallas.

I'm on a team in the Alienware CS:S tournament that's going on right now (Samsung SSD Detonation is the official name I think), and sadly it seems that everybody hacks.

Thinking about giving 1.6 a shot but if it's the same shit I'll probably just give it a pass... anyone have any insight into what CEVO-O/M is like, as far as legitimacy is concerned?

@OP, as far as team-oriented competitive FPS it's 1.6 or bust, it just depends on the environment you can find... if you can find a dedicated, friendly community CS is fun as shit, if not you will burn out trying.

Counter Strike 1.6 is a great game. Playing competitive is probably out of question, at this time. The skill level is very high, at this day and age. I would recommend this game to play in pubs(very fun to play with friends)*I still do*"I quit the scene a while back". I have spent most of my life playing this game, and I must say, do not invest too much time in the game. The players are cocky, and to sum it up, bad mannered. The game is hard to get good at because a person needs to find four other players that are just as dedicated and or skilled. One person can be good, but a team needs five good players, in order to be successful. The game takes more than aiming, that is team work. That is why the game was so successful, in the competitive scene.

The scene is dying, very slowly. I just want to say that you need to find a game that you will be able to keep up. The other players have ten years on a beginner, like yourself. The game is great, you should check it out. I am making the game look bad and too hard, but in order to get good you have to figure out the key tricks, and most the of the competitive players know the recoil, maps, grenade's hot spots, and teamwork. You would still be learning the recoil, to begin with. I just do not want you to waste your time on this game.
Team Fortress Two is a fun game, but the hitboxes are crap. It is on the source engine. The lag compensation is unbearable, at times. The community is full of pub players, but there is a small chunk of competitive players. You can Google Tf2 lobby and find a pug, right away. The game is a little limited by the six versus six rules. TF2 is into hats too much now, reason why I quit (I pugged but I did not scrim).

There is so much I skipped but, these are two games that I have played. TF2 gets dry, but Cs 1.6 is still fun. Any game with S and C labeled to it, is a good game. If you want to be the most competitive than go to cs 1.6, if you want to go to pubs and have fun go to css. Cs 1.6 and css have about even amount of players. If you want to play a game, and be on the same level, play black ops. Hope this post helps, I have left out countless details, but I need to get to sleep.

If you have any more questions just ask me.

P.S. I do not know anything about cod or quake live. I know about quake three, and that game is dead, other than the mods.

just play Quake Live and increase your FPS ability for all future FPS games or wait for CoD Black OPs to come out since sheer player population will create some demand for online league/ladder play
E-Sports is competitive video gaming with a spectator fan base. Do not take the word "Sports" literally.

Day of Defeat? I used to play that competitively like 5-6 years ago, but the community took a big hit when DoD:S came out (which wasn't nearly as good). Seems like most servers now days are Bot servers, so I imagine the competitive DoD scene isn't nearly what it used to be.

Quake, and always Quake.

The simplicity, speed and high skill factor is what makes it the best e-sport (tied with SC/SC2). Sadly, the community isn't all that great anymore, and many of the pros are slackers.

You want team game, go cs 1.6. If you want 1v1, go for quake live. Cod4 scene is nonexistent in NA iirc but very big in europe.

1.6 is still the most competitive FPS around, Quake Live is right there as 1b. After that, not much.

You couldn't be more wrong. I've played both at extremely high levels and can tell you that 1.6 is focused on setups and strats. Quake is a mind game, you have to keep 10 different timers in your head for respawns of mega, red, yellows, shields, weapons, ammo's, the position of your enemy and his progression, using sound to your advantage, positioning, quicker reactions, everything about CS is much more skill based than CS.

Yeah I would say that skill-wise Quake is much harder. Doesn't take long to learn how to shoot properly in CS and then you've pretty got the entire skill portion down.
No dough, no go. And no mercy.

You completely misregard the teamplay aspect, don't underestimate that.

To those that say CoD please rethink your answer. I was thinking TF2/QuakeLive, but I could be wrong on that.
Im basically looking for a blend of good competition, high skill cap, decently sized community, and frequent updates to the game. If it is purchaseable is fine, though no "cash-shop" games where you have the ability to purchase better weapons at the expense of real money, as those games are useless in my opinion.

As far as your choices go, if you are totally serious about it, there are only 2:

1v1: Quake
Team: CS (1.6)

But according to your description, you could also go for TF2. It's a fun game I play it competitively in a casual way, like I played BW. It has diversity with it's different classes, although you will mainly play 1 out of scout, soldier demo and medic.

I don't know about the NA scene, but europe is pretty active and you can always find a game quickly in the evening. For europe there are a couple of leagues, the most important is ETF2L.

It does have frequent support from Valve, even though they are a bit slow and don't always change stuff for the better, they DO listen to the competitive community and cater to their needs. For example the original game had critical hits, random damage ranges and random shotgun spreads. For all of those there are commands to turn them off now.

As far as skill cap goes, it is hugely reliant on teamplay and the core mechanic of the competitive game is the medics ubercharge. Awareness of your teams and the enemies teams situation is the most important skill, the mechanical aspect, as in aim and movement, is important too, but a team with better coordination will win against a team with better aim usualy.

nice post, i agree with everything else except you saying that 1.6 scene is dying. i dont know about the US but its still (and always will be) much much bigger than source here in northern europe, and pretty much the game to play competitively and still enjoy it after 10+ years of same maps etc. the community is not full of pub players, nobody played pub here for god knows how long unless its warmup, its all 2v2-5v5 matches on ladder(cb). wanna play at night when your friends are sleeping? theres gather. i will never grow tired of this game.

the community though always was full of impatient kids and cheaters. good thing is at a little higher level all players know eachother and not so many new players start the game anymore.

and to all quake people saying if you learn to aim in cs youre a perfect player, you couldnt be more wrong. i always compared this game to bw, impossible to master.

so if you got the dedication, enough freetime and some friends to play with id say go for it. you wont find a better timesink multiplayer fps.

I am talking about the pub scene, and the NA 5vs5 scene. I can find a pub that is full, at all times, but pubs are starting to be filled up with bots, like DOD, and or half life deathmatch. Counter Strike 1.6 is hard because inorder to be good, one has to learn the recoil. One cannot learn the recoil if there is no pub.
I would receommend playing counter strike: condition zero, EVEN THOUGH IT INCLUDES BOTS. You will learn the game a little.

Hands down, Counter Strike 1.6 is the most comepetetive game.

I haven't done any competitive FPS gaming in years. I used to do Counter Strike, Day of Defeat, Counter Strike Source and Day of Defeat Source. Won a few leagues and got to Cal M in most of them. That is about it. I would say I liked Day of Defeat more but it was not as popular as Counter strike. Skill wise it was the Quake & source engines you could abuse the shit out of them and it was considered skill.

Also did some Red Orchestra before it went retail. That was a tough game skill wise because it was a "realism" shooter so you had to rely on no HUD or crosshair.

CS 1.6 Best FPS ever... Go on pub servers and show your skill, make online friends and once you gather a crew of 5-6 people who have time to game suggest to join CEVO-A or Cal-O. You can even buy a 11 slots server for under $11 a month I think. I did this 4-5 years ago though, not sure if 1.6's community is still as big as it was back then. Good Luck!

You sound so negative there. That's similar to saying for BW, skill wise it was about abusing bugs like muta stacking, hold lurkers and generally working your way around the poor unit ai and it was considered skill.

Low ping 11 slot servers with HLTV cost like 30 bucks either per month or 3 months (last time I bought was like....May or June) and then a vent server is helpful whihc'll cost another 8 bucks a month for a nice one.
