What would be the most competitive FPS on the PC currently? To those that say CoD please rethink your answer. I was thinking TF2/QuakeLive, but I could be wrong on that. Im basically looking for a blend of good competition, high skill cap, decently sized community, and frequent updates to the game. If it is purchaseable is fine, though no "cash-shop" games where you have the ability to purchase better weapons at the expense of real money, as those games are useless in my opinion.
I honestly have no clue on what is the most popular skill-oriented FPS, so any advice would be good.
Games I've Played: Crossfire Combat Arms Urban Terror Quake Live

Counterstrike? Unless it's lost its momentum. I still haven't played an fps that required as much skill to this day.
|
The one and only, Counter Strike.

Counter-Strike and Quake Live. Call of Duty 4 is actually quite a competitive game itself, arguably one of the most played FPS game to date.
|
Counter-strike Source or 1.6? Im thinkin 1.6, but I've heard Counter Strike Source has a bigger community...
|
TF2? Not that competitive. TF2 is actually what I play most but there is no MLG TF2 for instance. I think there was for a very short time and it didn't work out. EG had a TF2 team for a very short time - it's a fun game not really a great competitive game. That said, the best clan seems to be dignitas, which is Select's clan.

CS 1.6
Can't go wrong with this =)

CS1.6 or CS:S Quake Live COD2/4 Day of Defeat Enemy Terrority
|
Counter-Strike and Quake Live are probably the 2 most competitive right now.

This is correct, you go CS 1.6. if you go for 5vs5 or QuakeLive for duel.
|
CS for a competitive team game, Quake Live for 1v1. IMO.

quake is the most skill/thought intensive fps. if you're good at quake, 1.6 is easy. *easy after a little bit of demo watching. good at quake can transition to easily mid-high level 1.6 with a couple weeks playing with a friend who has a good understanding of what popular 1.6 gameplay is like.

Urban Terror is really underground but this game is just ... art. Amazing feeling and moves, but well you have already played it. I guess you left because the community is too small.

EG still has a TF2 team, as do MGOs Complexity Gaming, eMazing Gaming, and Area 51 Gaming. TF2's not huge in North America, and it's not "the most competitive PC FPS" by a long shot, but it's more popular in Europe, and it's very underrated as a competitive game. If the game's marketing and post-release development didn't cater to the very people who are least likely to play competitively (hat lovers and Dustbowl players), TF2 might have been a bigger competitive success.

Quake skills do not correspond to Counter Strike skills. It takes a while for you to learn how burst works. Sniping may be easier however, but that sometimes depends simply on reflexes. CS1.6 is easily the most skill oriented first person shooter. Combat Arms is nothing. CS:S has larger and more obvious hitboxes, while the bullets don't go in straight lines all the time. It is very confusing.

Natural Selection, very competitive but small community.

Quake and Counter Strike.
