Basically it comes down to this, I never learned how to type "properly" This isn't to say that I sit there and type one letter at a time with just my index fingers but I definitely don't type as it's taught most places. With the amount of typing I do increasing I think it would be at least somewhat helpful for me to learn to type "correctly" instead of the somewhat strange variant of normal that I use now.

Basically, I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations on a website or program that teaches proper typing form (preferably free)

Thanks

Look into Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing lol! I remember playing on that a lot when I was a kid. It taught me how to type properly well while I was trying to avoid getting bugs on my windshield in that car game they have hahahaha.

My super elite typing skills come from my many years of piano and several thousand plays of typing games. I was a huge fan of nexus word wars before it got taken down.

I learned how to type from playing Starcraft on Battle.net, no lie. I was horrible until I started.

I actually type 100+ WPM in an extremely unconventional (and probably quite inefficient as well) manner, and I've never thought about learning to do it right lol. I barely use my pinkies at all.

Mostly just learned to type faster from playing online games... lol

Nothing too interesting or unusual about it, just a bit different from normal. Basically I keep my hands more or less on home row but hit more things than I should using my index fingers and also hit things from one side of the keyboard with the opposite hand from time to time. It gets the job done and with decent speed and accuracy but it just bugs me.

Plus it sort of falls to pieces when I'm nervous/rushed, Ex. trying to type gl hf before a game

Edit: just took a typing test ~40 WPM normally

I think the main thing to remember look at the key you're going for, and try to use the finger closest to that key.

One thing that I might want to add: Most typing programs teach you to return to homerow constantly (asdf jkl;). However, based on sheer finger movement, not intentionally moving back to homerow, but rather the next key is *far* more efficient then going back and forth. Think about traveling from point to point on a star/asterisk. It's faster to go from corner to corner rather than go back to the center every time. Note this isn't saying not to use homerow. You still use it as a general guideline.

Here is what i did, change you key board layout for your whole operating system to Dvorak, bam, now you HAVE to touch type. I'm not kidding, this is really how i learned to touch type, also, Dvorak > qwerty

Seconded. Raiding with no mic is an excellent way to improve typing speed. I had a class in high school where I learned proper form, but I never got any faster than hunt/peck with it until I started playing WoW. That literally doubled my speed to a respectable ~70-80 WPM.

lol i remember having 30 wpm using only my index fingers* in first grade :D

anyways, i'd just type random passages daily until i was comfortable with most keys. i tried to keep proper typing form (found on google) but it was really uncomfortable so i just took the foundation and adjusted to fit my comfort level and practiced daily with passages.

safe to say i peaked around 130 average apm in 8th grade, probably around 104-110 now.

this on a QWERTY, not that other crap

i use both dvorak and qwerty, i think dvorak is more comfortable to type on for long stretches but obviously you have to maintain proficiency in qwerty

If you are looking for an easier solution that doesn't require typing pointless paragraphs or passages, listen here.

Line up your left 4 fingers on ASDF and your right 4 fingers on JKL;

The next time you need to type something, keep your fingers always aligned. You are only allowed to type a key if you are using the finger that is closest to it.

If you want to type "s" you use your ring finger on your left hand. If you want to type "y" the closest finger is your right index finger. If you want to type "0" use your right pinky finger.

Pinkies are fingers too!

I heard there is a computer science professor at University of Toronto who types with two fingers. So yea... it's probably not the most essential to be able to type properly.

I think it's important to be able to type reasonable fast, however, whether you look at the keyboard or not. I'd say try to memorize the keyboard and just try to type a lot until your muscle memory develops.
