Im sick and tired of people abbreviating words that aren't meant to be abbreviated. It's "professional" ! When I see people type "pro" I always sit there drumming my fingers expecting them to finish the word, as "pro" represents the prefix meaning for.
It's blatantly obvious if all you do is look at the definitions of the words. A professional athlete is an athlete who reached excellence in his field, and is paid to do so.
A pro athlete is something that is done for athletes. A pronoun isn't an extremely high skill noun, is it? A program isn't a gram that gets paid to have mass is?
KeSPA is, by definition, "pro-gamer." However, Jaedong is a professional gamer.
For the love of Buddha, don't be lazy and type out the full word. It's only a few extra letters and you save my sanity and your dignity. It blows my mind how people can't even learn the English language properly when it's their first language.

pro means professional, i read about it on wikipedia. only pro knowledge ppl edit wikipedia, r u calling them liars?
|
I get annoyed when people call themselves either pro or professional gamers when they aren't making any money from gaming.
That said, I don't think anyone is losing any dignity or even misusing the language when they say pro in place of professional. I feel that words are tools and people constantly every day are using these tools differently and as long as the intended meaning is conveyed then they used language successfully. So for the love of satan, relax alittle
Just my opinion though ^^
|
Aren't meant to be abbreviated because of what? That you don't feel they should be?
You're going to have a very angry life if something so trivial will get you so riled up.
|
WHOA WHOA WHOA. A pronoun is not an extremely high skill noun?
Mind.
Blown.
pro is commonly used in the Internetz and general world as a abbreviation for professional. The shortening is legit. Not many gamers need to refer to pro in the way you are used to it being used. Like for example probably Jaedong is pro-gamer, being a gamer himself. But Jaedong is also a pro-gamer.
1 word changed the definition. Welcome to the English language.
Thus context matters.

Of course when you come into a group of people who use particular terms and tell them they're all wrong, they're going to get upset.
It's like if you went into a group of Australians and tried to tell them that a 'mate' is a sexual partner only, and that whenever friends call each other mate, it drives you mad, the reaction would not be positive either.
|
Is the fact that you're using contractions while censuring abbreviations a subtle wink at how you're goofing on that other topic?
Because I looked up that sweet Jonathan Swift letter where he writes that abbreviations pose a threat to the recorded history and existence of the British empire. And that like the first recorded use of the abbreviation "pro" for professional occurs in the 19th century.
i.e. this conversation has been going on for years and the general consensus on any level is that usage shapes the language, in all cases.
But now I'll just sulk.

Only if people stop using VIABLE.

Yeah. That'd make me angry ^^. Words mean different things to different countries. The best example is the name that is given to flip-flops, which is thongs in Australia and jandles in New Zealand. I'm unsure what the English call them. Accepting that we all use words differently is inherent to one's sanity.

A Serious Discussion About Pro Pro - A Comprehensive Look Pro, Is It Viable?

The best part about this blog was reading this post, thinking to myself "that is something baller would write," and see that it's by him.
Pro = professional; or "for"
What is a synonym?
|
Rofl are you seriously getting mad at people using a well known and widely used and accepted shortened version of a word? Just because it has a separate meaning?
How do you feel about the word bow? or wind? People use bow to describe a weapon, but also to describe an arch. You COULD just call it an arch but the English language is pretty adaptive. Don't get mad at trends, it's petty.

If I have ever seen or posted a more idiotically wrought blog than this one, I have done that drunk. There are times, not often, but there are those, that I wish mods closed blogs like they do other threads. This is one of them.
I think of stupid shit like this all the time. Occasionally it is funny to me. I do not go posting my assertions about these dim fantasies on TL. Here. You see that? It's my lead. Follow it.

I looked at this post, shook my head, then saw that it was baller and suddenly I realized it was beautiful.

It's fine. You're pro? Means it's your profession. Your job. You make your living off of it.
I got beef with the kids who say "pro room" when they're playing dota, and I know there isn't a single sponsored dota team in Korea.
|
pro/professional also counts as an adjective of skill ranking but is on the level of a professional of course. Not just it being a job.
|
The National Association of Abbreviated Words and Acronyms(NAAWA) is gearing up a lawsuit in face of your insulting post about one of our shining members, "pro."
|
There is, in fact, a way of saying that one's skill level is at a professional level, even if the person in question is not a professional. You can say "he plays at the professional skill level." See? Easy.

my mind is full of fuck already then i open tl and see this oh god

Word abbreviations are a part of every language. 'Pro' is actually an extremely common abbreviation especially in a sports context.

Right? The OP's link post to that other blog would make it seem that way. But everything else, including the endless refutations makes it impossible to know. Way to subtle if he was being ironic.

This seems pretty nit picky.. I still don't see why you hate it.. its not like you dont understand the meaning.. and its not like people are saying Pro instead of Professional out loud. Why beat so hateful?
|
Your definition of professional doesn't make sense since excellence is a "Commitment to Completion"
So Jangbi is someone who achieved a commitment to completion?
|
I just hate it when people say, "we have a couple of pro-games today", in reference to SC2.
The people aren't "pros". Yet.
But otherwise, I really have no problem with this.
|
Hyrule19024 Posts
Really? Are you sure? There's plenty of people who make a living playing SC2. That makes them professionals.

Btw, "pro" has legitimate noun and adjective definitions that fit how members of our community use the word.

ever heard of slang? new worlds develop and some words develop new meanings
you can't stop it, no use fighting it because you'll go crazy over it
if it makes sense, let it be
is it logically possible for "pro" to also mean "professional"? yes, so why object? this has been around for a long time now, you're a bit late if you wanted to stop it
