image heavy post!

"There is nothing to fear, nothing to doubt." (Pyramid Song)

I don't know how to start this...but I feel that it must be done. I have to praise them, because they are the definition of amazement. The eye-opening, eternal beauty of their music is unique. They aren't just another band.

They're Radiohead.

"Such a pretty house, and such a pretty garden." (No surprises)

It all began for me, when I listened to their album "Kid A" ten years ago. This record saved my life.

"Kid A" is a blistering mess, constructed with bleeps, noises and Thom Yorke's voice. A huge fucking mess, but still awesome. The combination of minimalistic arrangements and all those little big melodies...

"we're rotten fruit, we're damaged good, what the hell, we've got nothing left to lose." (Backdrifts)

Then I got older. I discovered their early albums, and immediately fell in love with "OK Computer" and "The Bends". I never really liked "Pablo Honey", though. It's a mediocre record with some nice hits, but nothing special.

MORE COOKIES!

"OK Computer" often is viewed as the ultimate Radiohead album, and I can understand this, because it combines the guitar-driven rock songs of the early years with all those complex structures and hiccups of the later years. For all of you, who never really got into Radiohead, "OK Computer" is definitely a good start. But there is more.

"Let's go down the waterfall, Have ourselves a good time, it's nothing at all" (I might be wrong)

Monotony. Sex. Pressure. Trapdoors. Bears.

(bears bears bears bears bears)

Neon lights. Panic. Vomit.
God loves his children.

Radiohead can save your life, too. Their music is transcendental. If they're playing in your country: Go to a concert. It's something you will never forget. They're the best live band on this planet.

"Some friend said Radiohead was boring, I showed him this, he never said it again.":

"I laugh until my head comes off. Women and children first." (Idiotheque)

I've seen it all. I'm home.

"I've no idea what you are talking about." (Bodysnatchers)

On videotape.

Lol I love music too but come on....

Radiohead can save your life, too. Their music is transcendental. If they're playing in your country: Go to a concert. It's something you will never forget. They're the best live band on this planet.

No they're not. No band can be the best band at anything because music is completely subjective. Sure if there's 2 extremes, like 1 guitar player learning how to play chords while the other is perfecting the Stairway to Heaven solo then we can say A>B but in cases like this it's impossible to say one band is the best because it's all a matter of personal preference. I hate it when people say stuff like this -_-. Go ahead and state "to me, Radiohead is the BEST EV3R" but don't proclaim them the best as if it's an objective fact.

Of course it's subjective. This is just an "I love Radiohead" blog entry. Blog entries are always subjective.

Tool and Porcupine Tree are also good bands.

There was an interview with thom yorke and one of the questions was about how there is a bunch of bands are doing ok commercially just trying to copy radioheads style

his response: good luck with ok computer

I love their music and how they keep developing musically yet staying 100% recognizable as radiohead

THE BEST band ever is an overstatement... Radiohead is good but not the best... i would suggest a change in the op... i do like radiohead but there are bands that are much better... Pink Floyd, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and others...

You didn't write anything on The Bends, that's kind of awkward.

agree with OP, radiohead is pretty much the best band in the world

unfortunately their most "popular" song (Creep) is HORRIBLE
god what an awful song

everything else past pablo honey is super good... I didn't like hail to the thief too much initially but it's grown on me.

Heavy fanboyism detected. Claiming that something is the best of anything, especially a band in modern music, is pretty much shouting at the top of your lungs that you are right and there is no alternate opinion. Pretty pretentious IMO. They are a good band, but come on. Should have made it "My favorite band" or something, or "Intro to Radiohead." Would have gone over better.

Yeah, I also thought about that, it surely would have been better. When I wrote the article, I was listening to "in rainbows" and my mind was blown again...so I got a bit over-emotional, I guess.

ya rly. Creep is great. Probably my second favorite song of theirs after "everything in its right place." I've listened to Paranoid Android so many times and I can't find anything to make me like it anymore than a 4 out of 5. Also I read this glowing review of the song Weird Fishes about how great the lyrics were... and honestly I think I have written better fish-related lyrics.

I can't say I ever got into their earlier stuff but I really enjoyed Hail to the Thief, Amnesiac, and In Rainbows.

Radiohead won't come back to Minneapolis after the fans chanted for them to play "Creep". So I'll stick with that reason for not liking that song.

Although I have qualms about calling any band the "best band ever", radiohead is one of my favorites (Kid-A and post). I have a feeling that most people think of radiohead pre KidA, which really is more mediocre comparatively. Radiohead has a welcome complexity to their minimalist music, and I guess its why I like them.
Edit: Oh, and muse sucks comparatively.

another hipster caught up in pretentious garbage
radiohead has like 3 great songs (creep, paranoid android, there there) and then like 9 albums worth of filler
there are so many bands out there that are more technically skilled, better songwriters, better conceptual writers etc etc etc it's not even funny
but radiohead is definitely a good "surface indie" band for those who need to use music as a way to look down on other people imo imo

So many baseless "points" here it's not even funny.

(Btw, including "Creep" in your top-3 songs makes your post lose most of its credibility, if any.)

The Beatles is far and away the winner of any "best band" evaluation with any sort of objectivity. Boundless creativity and musical progress, shaping genres that were hardly there before? Check. Astoundingly successful album sales? Check. Enormous body of work? Check. Durability? Check.

Radiohead is very good. One of the best bands of the last couple decades for sure. Up there with the likes of The White Stripes, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana and The Mars Volta.

creep and there there are two of the worse radiohead songs imo

even a lot of their filler is way better

in fact i would say every song on kid a is better than those songs

You have to "get" raw blues-rock, I guess. They do it better than any band since the 70's. The fact that their style of music is no longer popular and yet they still have managed success as a band speaks volumes about the quality of their work. They pretty much stand alone as a modern representative of their genre, like the Red Hot Chili Peppers do for funk.

Perhaps I should be saying Jack White rather than The White Stripes, as he is the real creative force and talent, and has been involved in numerous other successful projects.

Radiohead is very good. One of the best bands of the last couple decades for sure. Up there with the likes of The White Stripes, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana and The Mars Volta.

T__________T;

How can... You even... I don't....

But his voice... It's so bad... Sounds like a dying cat mixed with a little girl who dropped her ice cream in some songs. I will admit they had some decent songs, mainly due to the composition, but the vocals are simply horrid imo.

radiohead has like 3 great songs (creep, paranoid android, there there) and then like 9 albums worth of filler

My Iron Lung was a solid alt rock album way back in the day, everyone just associates Radiohead with being out-there, slightly-pretentious, and highly unique musicians.

They are a great live band though. Pretty intense light show (where your $90 went btw).

Radiohead are a good band. I only really listen to Kid A and Amnesiac these days, unless I'm cherry-picking tracks on iTunes.

Something like Kid A will likely never happen again.

MBV gets praise from hipsters who pretend to be "really into shoegaze" but have no idea who the Lilys are. They have one good album, and will never release anything else, get over it.

Bro, even ignoring MBV's astounding EP track record, they have two great albums and one good compilation, depending on how you feel about C86er stuff.

In contrast, the Lilys aren't even one of the top three bands to release stuff on Slumberland. And they aren't shoegaze, as "shoegaze" qua movement is inseparable from 1987-1992 Creation Records stuff that metamorphosed into brit-pop bandwagon chasing (e.g. Ride, Lush). Anything on American shores came well after shoegaze had run its course and is better described as just "dream pop."

agree with OP, radiohead is pretty much the best band in the world

god what an awful song

everything else past pablo honey is super good... I didn't like hail to the thief too much initially but it's grown on me.

non-conformist much ?

You don't need to be an Atease denizen or an Internet sociologist to know that Radiohead fans who hate "Creep" far outweigh Radiohead fans who think "Creep" is one of their best songs.

Don't listen to Porcupine Tree.

You should try Tool

If you want lots of layered music with some incredible skill (even the guitarist, who is the weakest link, is damn good) then listen to some Tool!

Definitely a heavier sound though, so I guess I'm comparing apples and oranges.

Later-era Lilys was much heavier into britpop then anything else, that doesn't change the fact that they've been around since 1988, released albums like Brief History, etc.

Modern shoegaze generally draws from more then one influence. But bands like Snowden or Autolux have nothing to do with dream pop, they have more in line with noise rock.

Thou I respect the overall contributions of The Beatles, no, they are not the best band, not by a long shot. They were uberproductive media puppets - if you make 50 albums, you would eventually get 20 songs right. The Beatles sort of created the music industry as we know it today and made some amazing songs, but I would dare saying that 70% of everything they produced is shit. its just bad music. Its the same story with Pearl Jam - at some point you should stop being "creative" and focus on producing something special.

And btw my favorite band is most likely Portishead

Nulla cetera. Early Lilys were MBV worship from the get-go and were one of many bands huddled around Slumberland/SpinART making Creation-jocking JAMC-cribbing noisy dreamy pop music. You can totally like them more than MBV - that's preference - but to say MBV have "one good album" and to draw a strawman of "people who like MBV pretend to be really into shoegaze" is straight quack talk.

"Modern shoegaze" is a misnomer because, again, a lot of "shoegaze" was geographic context, was a certain time and a certain attitude, q.v. "The Scene That Celebrates Itself." Their being a band in 1988 in the United States doesn't make them part of shoegaze any more than Half Japanese were part of no wave.

Which is to say that the Lilys, Black Tambourine, Velocity Girl, etc. are a result of shoegaze greeting American shores. Chronology doesn't matter; they come from a whole different scene than shoegaze and should be recognized as such. Call it "noise pop."

If by "they aren't dream pop, they're noise rock" you mean that Autolux or whoever takes more from the Jesus and Mary Chain side of the ur-shoegaze equation than the Cocteau Twins, fair enough. It's just that "noise rock" isn't expressly defined in terms of sound. "Noise rock" can be anything from Deerhoof to Acid Mothers Temple, so "they have nothing to do with dream pop, they have more in line with noise rock" is a pretty meaningless statement. I mean, "dream pop" isn't either, but when people use "shoegaze" to describe something that just has a lot of pedals and reverb and whispered vocals and some Slowdive influence or something it just makes me so mad I could post on the Internet some more.

We probably shouldn't start arguing about genre tags and the sounds they describe though because it eventually just turns into that Robert Frost poem "The Secret Sits."

if we are only counting rock bands led zeppelin wins pretty easily. to say there is a best band out of all the genres is kinda pointless tho.

Your shoegaze knowledge is impressive as hell. o.o

I'm a big fan of the genre but I never got into that much. I mostly listen to Slowdive, MBV, Swervedriver, The Naked Souls, etc. I do love the genre though and if you have any recommendations that would be awesome.
