for me, this was THE shit. best mecha ever, better than that gundam crap (unless you're talking about the originals of course). i watched this when i was like 8 or something on VHS back in my cousin's house in korea. watched this every single time when i went back to korea by going to the video rental shop and renting the entire series and watching it back-to-back non-stop. the mecha were original, BGM was badass and i cried when the last episode finished ;( had the entire collection of toys which actually did combine, which was pretty badass and still is.

and yes i like it better than gaogaigar.

i present to you the best series of the entire Brave franchise: Legend of The Brave - Da Garn (전설의 용사 다간)
+ Show Spoiler [lots of videos] +
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubfD42INIH0
(i liked the korean OP more, as I found out later after watching the japanese version. yes it's cheesy as fuck, but still, it's better.)

(Great Da Garn GX was the sexiest biatch ever)

(back then, they pulled off some sexy attacks without flashy CG)

(one of the saddest moments in my anime-watching life)

(the "single" robot that really had a style, 7-changer)

(not exactly from the series, but throwing it here anyway cause it's badass)

they had toys that actually did combine and transform. how baller was that, especially back in the 90s?

Hmm.....Never watched mecha anime before.....including Gundam....

But if you consider Voices of a Distant Star a mecha anime, then that's the only one, and also my favorite one that I've watched.

I'm lame, I know. But I haven't watched that many Animes to start.

Gurren Lagann falls into the Super Robot category and so does the (general) Brave series.

GaoGaiGar is for sure the most significant and well known of the Brave series (especially since it's the only licensed one I think) and the least dated. As for Da-Garn, that's something I haven't seen myself. I've seen plenty of old anime (0079) and I do treat them fairly but as is I have some trouble appreciating Super Robot series and poorly aged Super Robot series don't work well for me at all! Of course, GaoGaiGar and TTGL are great series.

As for my favorite mecha series, I've gotta go with 08th MS Team or Zeta, but it's hard to pick in such a broad genre.

It hasn't really been animated (save for one movie a long time ago) but Five Star Stories is considered the LotR of mecha in Japan.

Evangalion is pretty good. I'm sorry I'm on the bandwaggon but some of gundam is good. I felt that astray was decent. Actual seed was meh.

Code Geass is just as mecha as Gundam in the sense that both are political, military based shows. The only difference is that Code Geass gets a little more involved in the strategic political side (while most recent Gundam shows have been straying away from that). :p

How can there possibly be any mecha anime better than NGE? It's just that mind-blowingly good.

Going off of childhood nostalgia, I'd say Gundam Wing. But after watching more anime now, I'd have to put my vote on Gurren Lagann too A true example of escalation.

OH MAN! I had the two toys on the right and I just thought they were random transforming toys. The middle one transformed into the space shuttle and the right one was a fighter jet. Man I'll bet my mom still has them lying around somewhere.

Da Garn's opening sure sucks, but the rest of it was great, especially the edgy villains and the best transformation sequences.

I can't decide on a favorite.

Drama & Action: Zeta Gundam, 08th MS Team

Tentatively my vote goes to Evangelion, but the remarkable aspects have little to do with it being a mecha.

But before this thread I never would have guessed that so many people liked Gurren Lagann so much! It thought it was the kind of show that many people would like, but that few would think is best of breed.

This is how I see it: a lot of anime these days are symptomatic of trying too hard to be intellectual (or at least pop-intellectual). NGE set this trend with bizarre Christian references everywhere and mysterious concepts that demanded explanation; TTGL represents a break from that and instead gives us emotion over reason, determination over logic. It was silly and it knew it, but it all made sense in a way. It didn't try to overreach itself in trying to inject intellectualism, and thus it became far greater than it would've been otherwise.

EDIT: I'm a TTGL fan AND an Eva fan. I haven't watched too many mecha animes.

As far as story goes, i don't think there is no doubt that NGE is the best (or at least one of the best) mecha anime. Code Geass is also pretty good, meaning the non retarded parts of the show (about 20% of it).

As a whole, i have to say 08TH MS Team is my favorite, nice action, realistic combat and characters, and pretty entertaining overall.

But let's be honest, mecha shows are all about hot robot action, and the Gundam IGLOO ovas just win in that aspect (while having almost no story or character development).

Hey Konandora, have you by any chance watched this one mecha show in Korea a long time ago where the main character wore this golden suit thing and his mech was a lion that transformed and got additional parts that powered it up? I remember I watched like every single episode of it and I loved it to death but I can't remember what it was called. It's been bugging me for like four years now. There were these other mechas in it but they all were sentient beings themselves, if I remember correctly. In particular I remember that there was these blue and red dudes that were able to merge together to become a stronger mecha, and later on they met their green and yellow counterparts. The main character had this special move in his mecha where he put his hands together and thrust into the enemy and pulled out their core or something.

Please tell me that kid did not just summon a Giant Robot with a Star of David.

Because if Jews get Giant Robots that is totally imba.

Also, UC Gundam is Best Gundam, as well as being the best Mecha, in general.

For the most part, I'm more of a real robot fan, I'm not big into the super robot shows. I liked Macross, Gundam and Metal Armor Dragonar (a show that was basically missed because of Gundam, but its pretty damn good). Most of the other Tomino flicks are pretty good too.

My biggest pet peeve with Gundam is every time I say it people automatically think Gundam Wing. Or Seed. Or worse that second Seed. No I mean Mobile Suit Gundam. I mean Newtypes and massive colony drops. I mean beautiful 80s animations and over the top voice acting. And most of all I mean Char. Char F***ing Aznable.

I have good memories of the first half of Eureka Seven.
