for me, this was THE shit. best mecha ever, better than that gundam crap (unless you're talking about the originals of course). i watched this when i was like 8 or something on VHS back in my cousin's house in korea. watched this every single time when i went back to korea by going to the video rental shop and renting the entire series and watching it back-to-back non-stop. the mecha were original, BGM was badass and i cried when the last episode finished ;( had the entire collection of toys which actually did combine, which was pretty badass and still is.
and yes i like it better than gaogaigar.
i present to you the best series of the entire Brave franchise: Legend of The Brave - Da Garn (전설의 용사 다간) + Show Spoiler [lots of videos] +http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubfD42INIH0 (i liked the korean OP more, as I found out later after watching the japanese version. yes it's cheesy as fuck, but still, it's better.) (Great Da Garn GX was the sexiest biatch ever) (back then, they pulled off some sexy attacks without flashy CG) (one of the saddest moments in my anime-watching life) (the "single" robot that really had a style, 7-changer) (not exactly from the series, but throwing it here anyway cause it's badass) they had toys that actually did combine and transform. how baller was that, especially back in the 90s?

Hmm.....Never watched mecha anime before.....including Gundam....
But if you consider Voices of a Distant Star a mecha anime, then that's the only one, and also my favorite one that I've watched.
I'm lame, I know. But I haven't watched that many Animes to start.

Gurren Lagann falls into the Super Robot category and so does the (general) Brave series.
GaoGaiGar is for sure the most significant and well known of the Brave series (especially since it's the only licensed one I think) and the least dated. As for Da-Garn, that's something I haven't seen myself. I've seen plenty of old anime (0079) and I do treat them fairly but as is I have some trouble appreciating Super Robot series and poorly aged Super Robot series don't work well for me at all! Of course, GaoGaiGar and TTGL are great series.
As for my favorite mecha series, I've gotta go with 08th MS Team or Zeta, but it's hard to pick in such a broad genre.

Eureka Seven for me, always loved anime from BONES.

It hasn't really been animated (save for one movie a long time ago) but Five Star Stories is considered the LotR of mecha in Japan.

Evangalion is pretty good. I'm sorry I'm on the bandwaggon but some of gundam is good. I felt that astray was decent. Actual seed was meh.

So I'm going to assume that Voices of a Distant Star isn't mecha?

Code Geass is just as mecha as Gundam in the sense that both are political, military based shows. The only difference is that Code Geass gets a little more involved in the strategic political side (while most recent Gundam shows have been straying away from that). :p
