I made another progressive/trance mix

Not much to say here. I uploaded another progressive/house/trance mix that I just made. I hadn't made one in a while with life and all so I just threw together some of the songs I've been into in the past month. Most songs are from Gareth Emery's new album, some older tracks, and some new-ish tracks from a really good progressive trance producer named Lewis Dodkins. I know many TLers enjoy this type of music so this is why I am making another blog just for a single mix.

http://soundcloud.com/rt24/october-progressive-house-trance-mix

Both this mix and my other one are now downloadable too so that's a bonus. Let me know what you think of the song selection and feel free to ask for any track titles.

I use:
-Akai APC40
-Akai LPD8
-Traktor Pro
-Audio 2 DJ (had an Audio 4 but I sold it b/c the audio 2 works just fine)
-Mackie MR5 monitors
-Sennheiser HD-25s
-MacBook
-Crane Stand

I also purchase all of my tracks from Beatport and everything so I am completely legal.

Yeah electronic dance music screams midi. I have no idea why EDM DJs and producers even use CDJ; you can do so much more with midi (unless you scratch). I suppose it's because it's been used for years. Not to mention having to completely switch set-ups in clubs from one DJ to another would be a pain if everybody used their own midi set-up.

hmm, i am curious, how come the APC40 and not, for example the VCI 100?

i'm sitting on a VCI-100SE and an audio 2 dj as well.
i've been finding things to be a bit...weird, as i am house/trance mixer like you, but i can't find anything to do with my jogwheels.

You can do way more with an APC40. The only good thing about the VCI 100 is that it has jog wheels, and if you don't intend on scratching or pitch bending with a jog wheel (you can do it with just buttons), it's not that amazing. You can customize so much with the APC40, but with the VCI 100 you are limited to 2 decks with minimal effects set ups and only 2 up-faders. Not to mention, the APC is huge, it's bigger than my laptop. It's definitely bulky enough for events. That + the cost, I got the APC40 for like 300 or something, maybe 250ish, but the VCI-100 is a solid 600 if you are getting the ean golden edition which really is the only good one.

VCI seems better at first but if you really look into it, you can do so much more with the APC. I was about to get a traktor kontrol x1 to be my new EQ panel (i use a 4-band eq) + extra things but I found the lpd8 functions fine for EQ and the APC40 does what I need it to do.

Do you DJ as well? Or maybe thinking about getting into it?

edit:

just read your edit. Yeah exactly what I meant pretty much.

edit:

one thing you can do it assign them to pitch bend if you already haven't like I mentioned. Or assign them to scroll through your library. Either that or maybe have them as an effect you commonly use or something.

i got into already. about a month ago, and i'm slowly doing my first mix. i've mapped a few effects already, but mapping is still really new to me, so i'm constantly messing up. i am pretty noob with the lingo as well, so i don't know what the 4band eq is. i am using traktor though, is that 4band eq in traktor proO?

Yep, 4 band EQ is low/mid-low/mid-hi/hi as opposed to low/mid/hi. You can control your songs wayy more that way. They are only available in Xone mixers but Traktor has an option to replicate your mixer section as a xone 92 mixer.

To get it working, go to traktor preferences, then mixer, then under EQ select "Xone". Haven't gone back since.

edit:

Mapping takes a couple months to learn. Once you understand midi, you will be able to do it extremely fast. Also it's good to learn beatgridding, that will help your mixes a LOT. Saves a lot of stress and mess-ups.

crap! that means i must make more mappings (running out of knobs soon) to control those extra eqs..

how are you with effects, do you make your own?

i really like to freeze a song out with delay. but i'm currently looking for more chained fx to make my transitions smoother, do you have any recommendations?

lol that's another reason why I didn't get the VCI, as I mentioned before you are actually quite limited. Once you start to discover what you can do on traktor you will be itching for another midi. The kontrol x1 is a good addition as you can use it as an EQ panel and map the other buttons to whatever you like.

edit:

In response to effects, I use hardly any. I am more for letting the song play by itself because the producers know what they are doing. You can do a lot with EQ. But for effects I have one multi-effect that sounds like a swooshing which i hardly use, a delay function with freeze which can be handy for changing from one track to a very different one, then I use reverb, peak, and formant filter alone occasionally. I only really use them if I mess up and need to fill the air with something. I generally find them risky though.

edit:

In response to mappings/modifiers below, I don't use modifiers, I don't even though what they are to be honest. Mapping works fine for me, but it's a long process to learn. It also depends on your set-up, some work different than others. It also depends if you are using Traktor LE or Traktor Pro. With LE, you can only map certain midis. With Pro, you can map near anything. The APC40 is actually an Ableton controller, but I use it fully for Traktor.

edit:

assuming modifiers are for multiple mappings for a single button/knob/fader?

There is a slight difference, because what we are doing isn't really making the songs, we're just mixing them into a long mix using transitions and effects.

If you want to make music, you should be a producer (deadmau5, etc), you will be REVERED.

Thanks. I don't usually listen to this kind of music too much, but these kind of mixes are great just when you want some sounds to the background while doing something. Keep em coming!

Yhea, modifieres are for multiple mappings, kinda like the shift key on your keyboard making a--->A, b-->B.

btw, when you are mixing in and out, you solely rely on the EQs? :S.
can you tell me if you use the reverb/peak/formant filter under chained or advanced? and is there anyway i can get more effects. I'm assumin you are using traktor pro ^^

Yeah for 95% of the transitions in general I rely solely on EQs. I don't believe I touched an effect in the last mix.

The reverb/peak/formant are in the chained option but I use them only by themselves but just turning on the single effect itself and messing around with the dry/wet and the single parameter of that effect.

Yeah I use traktor pro, you want MORE effects though? Are you using Pro or LE? Because in pro there are something like 18 different effects which is way more than necessary (however you don't get that Jet effect from the pioneer mixers which you hear a lot in others mixes, but I think you can combine 2-3 from traktor to make that effect). If you combine more than 1 there are endless effects. In LE (limited edition) however, there are only 6 effects I believe.
