Well, i had a driving lesson today. My instructor apparently "forgot" to take me out on the highway in previous lessons. So today, was my first hime on them with me controlling the car.
Went down the on ramp, pedal floored, trying to get up to 100 km/h. Merged on, and i was doing it. I was scared though. It was my first time driving over 60 km/h, and it was in pouring rain.
Drove around on the highway for a good half hour, and i got mostly comfortable. My only problem was i kept slowly drifting to the left. Meh.
Afterwards, when i got off the highway, the normal 50 km/h seemed really slow.
Lucky i didn't hit anything

Anyone else have any similar experiences when first driving fast?

Eh, first time I ever went driving (after basic parking lot turning and stuff), my dad took me on the highway. It was fun just flooring it.

Nah, I never had a problem with going over 60km/h the very first time I went out on the road I went up to 100km/h after just driving for 20mins. Was an automatic, then I got an instructor to teach me to drive a manual then it wasn't until a little later that I got onto the motorway. But no, I never had any uncomfortableness... if you know what I mean.

I did my driver's ed through my school where my driver's ed teacher was also my math teacher the year before. I did really well in his class and I was also a year older than everyone else in driver's ed so he let me off so easy. I didn't have to watch those painfully bad movies that were made in the '80s. I missed half of the classes and whenever I did go, I was free to go and do other stuff around the school or just do homework in the back. Then I only did one session of actual driving with him and he ended up taking a nap when we were drove back from Detroit cause he needed to run an errand there. Then when he woke up, he asked me why I was only going the speed limit and that I should keep up with the highway flow.

Yeah, we've got some fantastic instructors around the motor city.
I don't have mono anymore. Woooo!

Yea i had a similar experience when i went through driver's ed. Sometimes i still get that feeling but it also depends on the car your driving. When i go around on my mom's beamer, it feels like everything is the same speed due to the car's weight or suspension or whatever it is. going 120mph and 45mph felt the same whereas when i drive in my car and i go 120mph i can feel my steering wheel vibrate.

Your driving instructor got you to drive 100km/h on the highway in the pouring rain? That's fucking dangerous dude, what the fuck. Most highway locations have posted speed limits of 80-90 in optimal conditions. 100 km/h in the rain is ridiculous...

Where do you live lol
All the big highways are 100 km/hr

Also, I highly doubt that it was as bad as the OP described as the general traffic would have slowed down in poor weather conditions. If he was going 100 km/hr then it means everyone else was going at least the same speed.

if you have issues drifting to either side look straight ahead a fair bit in the distance and not right in front of the car. old people tend to drift side to side because they are narrowly focuses on the bit of road just in front of them instead of a broader look into the distance.

In the US it's not too uncommon to go 135 km/h in the rain, the roads are nice and big enough that you're not bumper to bumper.

EDIT: This is on the highway, of course. Urban areas differ, but I live in a more rural part of Florida, most of the roads have a speed limit of 55 MPH that most people ignore and go ~70MPH on

"Driving fast" is relative to road conditions, speed limits, and other drivers: i.e. driving 100km/h on a 100km/h road is way, way easier than doing 65+ on a 50 road.
You can't really say you've "driven fast" until you crossed the line with the three conditions I listed above.
You're in Canada right? When you're ready, try going on major highways (110+) outside the city, and floor it up to 160-200 (depending on your car) when no one is around. A lot of times the avg speed will approach 150 anyways. If you're really daring and have a capable car, try 200+ but make sure to drive down the middle of the road for added safety. Obviously, you need to make sure the road is deserted for ~2-3km ahead.

I remember how when I went on the highway for the first time, I was scared out of my mind. Eventually, the more you practice it, the more comfortable you feel with it. Now I can just merge onto highways like its second nature or something. I've even driven on highways during the night, and during rain. =0
Well anyways, good luck with your future driving lessons and road test!

Yeah, Kelowna. I don't see them abiding by speed limits either haha, but you would think the driving instructors would at least get you to follow the law. I know some main highways are ~100 km/h speed limits, but I only really see those on big highways between cities/towns and such. I figured OP meant driving on the highway in town. It was mainly the "pouring rain" part them made me 'wtf'. I've seen a couple people hydroplane and stuff, so maybe I'm just a little more on the safe side than others.

OP is probably from Quebec (taking a guess since it rained all day and well, 100km/h)

on an unrelated note, I used to try and find what's the fastest my car would go ('06 chevy cobalt) and uhh, one time I drove up to 150km/h @ 3am during a snowstorm. ended up doing donuts for like 30 seconds, scariest shit I ever pulled in my life.

I now drive 10km/h under speed limits. I'm such a pussy =/

I crashed when on my driving lessons, the other guy was to blame but my instructor got a rather nasty bruise on his temple lol. That's what you get for not using the seatbelt in apparently calm areas.

Same here. Got on the freeway for the first time and hit 70 mph. After getting to a slower part of town and slowing down to 50 it felt so different. Then hit the small roads and slowed to 25-30. Felt like I was crawling around town ...

i had 3 friends with me, and i was terrified that i would crash and kill all of us, because that would be my luck. So, I was extremely cautious, but other than that, it was great.

lol you are crazy. why would you ever go faster than 100-120 when there's snow on the road. I've pushed my dad's car ('02 hyundai elantra) to about 165 but it was on a clear highway in perfect weather...

Another reason I make sure I'm driving at a safe speed is because I maxed out my car('99 sunfire) at 195km/h on the way to Vancouver last summer and I felt one side of my car lift of the side of the road for a second or two around this one bend. Scared the living shit out of me. I can't believe my friend didn't freak out who I was driving with. Never again.

The thing I remember most about learning to drive was the green eyed girl in my driving class that took turns driving with the instructor (my PE teacher/track coach lol). She was so hot. Wonder what she looks like today? Do HighSchools even still have drivers Ed?

QFT

I used to love driving, actually going somewhere and i didn't have to bug my parents to take me, or work it around their schedule.

But then i realized it was no different than taking a bike, it gets you from point A to point B, and it costs you a ton of money.

Oh wow, a lot of replies.
Firstly, it wasnt "pouring rain" like i said in my OP, but it was raining pretty hard.
2nd, the car was some chevrolet sedan, cavalier or something.
third, I am in Ontario, not quebec.
Lastly, i've never been in control of a car above that speed, but ive been in A car going 160.

yeahhhhh, when I was 17 years old I had GREAT ideas... lol...
I eventually pushed it to 176 iirc but I think I could've went a bit faster. sadly the area I pushed it to the limit (rofl) had police from time to time so I just pulled a "good enough" and slowed the fuck down. turns out about 2km after there was one so yeah, close call lolol.
