I just got home from a trauma in-service at work. The entire focus was trauma and how our system is going to allow us to transport patients to the most appropriate facility instead of the closest. A huge part of this was speaking about injuries associated with MVC (Motor Vehicle Collisions). This video is fairly graphic, but really drives the point home. Take caution when you go out on the highways.. it only takes a second for someones life to change forever..  | ||

Furthermore, the expirience also made me realize how lucky I am to even be alive, but still knowing it can end in an instant. Of course I knew it already, but I don't think I really got it. | ||

It's a good video, but I think it doesn't serve its intended effect well... should people be scared into driving safe? | ||

This begs the question, what SHOULD be done to reduce the amount of dangerous driving? This doesn't even go into driving under the influence of alcohol etc which new measures are being taken to prevent, at the very least. | ||

Right now (at least where I live), it's a joke to get a licence. Almost everyone can get one without a problem. I feel scared driving with half my friends because frankly they shouldn't be on the roads. | ||

The road test here (varies by state etc) consists of driving through some traffic, making some turns, doing a 3 points turn, a parallel park, etc. I am not sure if making it harder to get a license would make a big dent. Most of the really bad accidents are caused by people who are capable of passing stringent driving exams choosing to drive like maniacs.... or so I believe. | ||

But after 1 year (after we pass the road test), we need to go for a computer based 'hazard perception test', which is really, really easy. Then finally we have to be on a provisional #2 licence for 2 years before we get our full licence. They've slowly been increasing the amount of hours practice you need with a parent/teacher over the last 2 years here. I needed 50 hours before I could attempt my road test, then it was at 100 hours, and finally it's at 120 hours. Now there's talk to increase it to 150 hours. You raise a good point though, making that process harder probably won't change much in terms of serious accidents on the road. But what will? | ||
