So I write this blog at 1 am when I should be starting my problem set due tomorrow ^___^

I was on facebook procrastinating and was about to post "LOOOOOL" on a friend's photograph. Yet before I hit send, I found myself hesitating. These thoughts ran through my head in that fraction of a second where I hesitated:

"Is this a quality post?"
"Am I reducing the quality of this discussion by posting such a comment?"
"Should I put some thought into contributing and writing something better/more clever instead of spamming thoughtless comments?"
"Will I get warned by the mods for a bad posting history?!"

Perhaps I exaggerate somewhat and these questions did not formulate my brain in such a formal manner. But nevertheless, the fact that I checked myself did occur. I also remember when I used to play bw a lot more on battle.net. When I spoke to friends afterwards on Skype/MSN, I would warily hesitate before spamming etc because on battle.net you would get kicked off the server for doing so.

Thus my question is this: is it just me or have other users found that their online persona and mannerisms etc have mannered up and become more careful EVEN when in spaces that are not policed (where there is no consequence/punishment for being rude and thoughtless), just from being a poster on the diligently monitored TL.net? Do you find that this applies in other areas as well?

Since TL is so strict, I find myself seizing every single opportunity I have to troll someone outside TL.

too true, the introduction of the banlings was entirely to try and keep up with the number of bans that needed to go out. They're still only warning people for things I think should be 3-day bans...

TL has long been a bastion of good quality posting, and I'm glad the sc community has built up that way, instead of being like any number of other communities where BM is the expected norm in every related setting.

This is 100% true, I was on facebook and had the exact same quandary (I eventually did post it ). When you visit the rest of the Internet you realize what a special place TL is.

TL is the best place in the internet for forum moderation but i still feel that the bans these days are rarer than when sc2 was first announced. I dont know im sure there are stats about this.. ive seen some before..

Wow I wasn't expecting much from this post by it's title, but I wholeheartedly agree!

Very nicely expressed . I too, find myself being generally more well-mannered in gaming, the internet and life after spending so much time on TL. I ascribe it to good habits perpetuating themselves.

Nice blog ^^

It's really hard to judge posts on intangible stuff like 'I don't like how you post'.

I don't blame the mods in the slightest, the massive amount of extra traffic means it's hard to give momentum to increasing quality without a huge amount of work, which could just end up resulting in having to ban far too many people.

They do a good job, and TL is in pretty great shape compared to a lot of sites.

When us banlings started, the whole mod team adjusted their moderation "strategy" to focus on warning rather instead of purging. We try to make sure everyone gets a few chances, as well as the benefit of the doubt. Of course, there are exceptions

People like to type whats on top of their head. Nowhere is this more true then Facebook. Every picture, article, event has to be commented by everyone. Not much thought are put into comments, mostly whats on top of the posters head, so their value is mostly social. Though people forget this and get offended by random comments. Ideally comments that the OP wants to save he can mark, the rest should be purged after 48hrs.

Quality posts and replies are few, where the OP is making a case for a mechanism or unit. Usually people are surprised that there is a quality post and spotlight it right away to promote more quality discussions. I'm really glad TL is so well moderated overall so that the tone is always friendly in the topics. Even the Live threads are surprisingly filth free. Compare this to something like the chat room of a stream with 500+ viewers.

I cant count how many posts I have typed up, or started to write then just said fuck it. Its a mixture of no one will read/care and nahh thats a bit too mean spirited.

As for facebook, it is an abomination and should be purged with hellfire. Ever since I stopped going to that site I would say my life is a lot better, and a lot less wasted(i still waste a lot of time, but not nearly as much)

it was funny seeing this while with the lock icon... lol kona >_< and this blog was not so much meant to ask whether TL standards have dropped due to the swarm of sc2 players, but whether being a poster on TL has made you better mannered in other online aspects ;p
