Mafia, like I've said, is an educated guessing game of epic proportion. You need little more than a quick mind, the ability to argue, and a good lynch vote to win. It is split up into day/night cycles, with people voting on who to lynch during the day, which is the way the town as a whole kill the "bad people", or mafia, unless the mafia trick them into lynching/voting to kill one of their own. That is the difference between the two. The town are largely an uninformed majority, while the mafia are an informed minority. The mafia will be like, in their role pm, this is your team:

3) Incognito
4) Ace
5) Ver
6) BloodyC0bbler
7) You
through deductive reasoning, you know who the entire town are, unless there is a 3rd party or faction, but I won't even get into that today with you all.
Mafia is a really fun game. I have been playing it nonstop for 7 months since I started playing it. At first, I thought it wouldn't be fun, as it is basically people just posting in a forum thread, but it is soooo much deeper than that. Once you get good, you start to realize how much you can mess with the entire thread if you are good at lying as mafia.
Mafia basically try to kill the town at night. They will, on teamliquid, be able to kill half of their number rounded up. If there are 5 mafia members, they can kill 2.5 people, so that would be 3 kills a night (or KP which = kill power) until they lost a member. They are trying to kill the town.
The town are comprised of both "power roles" and "townies".
Power Roles are roles which have another certain aspect relating usually to the night. Sometimes they relate to the day, but those are more rare. You may investigate someone as a detective, protect someone's life as a medic, or possibly even plant bombs on people. Who knows! It all depends on what the mod wants out of their game, and what role they give you.
