Decided to put this into blog cos I think it might be too obvious for most of you guys.
I haven't played SC1 except for the campaign and a few MP games. However, I did play Age of series for quite a long time. In that game, I always tried to keep my rally points close to my army to keep reinforcing my army in a fight.
However, I am not sure if that's such a good idea in SC. I saw some of the pros keeping their rally points in their base, probably for two reasons: First is to have an army in the base to fend off drops and secondly because maybe gathering a full new army is better than trying to reinforce an army that's almost dead.
So, my question, what do you guys do? Do you change it depending on the situation or do you keep your rally points close to the fight or in your base?

only rally to their base if its absolutely crucial you win this battle/keep the contain up and you cant do it with the units you have there. multiple reasons for this.
your troops could get intercepted on the way there, and thus you'd be losing units for nothing.
your troops could keep your natural safe from attack while you're occupied (also applies to quick defense for drops)
finally your new mass of troops could be a totally independent force from the main branch of your army and go attack a wayward expansion/be dropped into the back of their base/help secure a new expo etcetcetc

Prettymuch the only time I rally an opponent's base is if it's completely all-in. Otherwise I'll just manually grab whatever is coming out if it's something important.

Choke/ramp/open space depending on what's going on
If it's the all-in game-ender rally to open spot near base entrance.
