Watch the British! They know how to make proper television. Shows like Coupling (probably the best comedy show ever made), Peep Show, Jonathan Creek, Poirot and Sherlock Holmes with Jeremy Brett. I can not begin to explain how great that series is, Jeremy Brett puts on one of the best performances ever in any context. What's even sicker about the performance is that he is dying towards the end of the series and still puts on a flawless performance.

The problem with American entertainment is not that they are stale but they have grown progressively wimpy, PC, and watered-down.

you're literally on smack if you think uk tv is any good outside of a few shows

sure, we might have a bunch of good comedies but there have been about 4 watchable dramas produced in the past decade in the uk.

Uh, there is a lot of good stuff buried out there in "American Entertainment"

Movies:
Inception
There Will Be Blood

TV:
The Wire (everyone watch this, seriously)
Mad Men
Six Feet Under

Music:
too many bands to name

Its not all Jerry Bruckheimer and Everybody Loves Raymond, just do some research, I mean this isn't even indie obscure shit, its pretty mainstream

American TV in particular is pretty good, I have watched plenty of foreign (Indian, Korean, Chinese) TV and my god most of it is absolute balls awful

Try some British entertainment. Some of the best writing I've seen on TV in a while.

I'm seconding this. One of my recent favorite shows. Although the first season is 3 episodes, each episode is about an hour and a half long. Well put-together show.

Of course, you have to seek it out. If you just watch reality TV and bad drama you won't get a good impression

Inception was great if you cut out the last minute of the movie i.e the horrible ending.

One thing I never got was why Mad Men never really took off, now I don't know how big it is in the US but outside of it, it's placed on obscure places on obscure times. It's a shame because it's actually one of the few decent series out of America at the moment.

The problem with American entertainment is that there seems to be a clear lack of talented script writers and an overabundance of directors who don't realize how much they suck, combined with a tendency of producers to engage in heavy executive meddling.

And how many times do I have to see a book "brought to life" as a screenplay only for it to turn out that the director never read the book? :/

Sometimes it's the other way around, they read it way to much and everything they do is a tribute making it a mess. Read: Watchmen.

That´s why I only watch Kurosawa, Chow and kinds these days.
Hollywood hasn´t produced anything worth watching since the Governator retired from action films IMO.

Also some british comedy is okay.
Watch Black Books, it´s the best comedy series ever

Ye I agree with you, American movies, TV shows, and music all suck. Instead of trying to make real works of art, they're just trying to make a quick buck off crap. Japan is still good though.

a good fallback when i get tired of US films are kurosawa flicks, or even anything with toshiro mifune in it... not all his movies are great but he was an incredible actor. admittedly all my favorite foreign films are pretty old - city of lost children, delicatessen, solaris (russian version), alphaville... but i guess the same goes for my favorite US films. also BBC stuff is surprisingly good, i loved the original series of the office and i'll probably check out Sherlock after i finish watching deadwood

i wonder - if you gave a non-US studio/director hundreds of millions of dollars to make a film, where would all that money be spent anyway? isn't there really only one place to dump it, into special effects and/or famous actors, and at that point how different would it really be from american cinema? it would definitely be interesting to see different cultures takes on the big budget movie though. the only thing i can think of that is somewhat analogous is bollywood, which i don't really dig :D
