I'm Over American Entertainment

It was cool while it lasted but American entertainment is getting painfully stale. I would like to see what kind of shit other countries can come up with if they are given the same budget. I wanna see like a $500,000,000 budget Uzbeki action film. Shit blowing up Asia Minor style with hardcore Persian lute music compositions or something... fuck violins in the soundtrack. I wanna see expensive rugs and exotic architecture as the norm in every scene, and different social norms and morals and shit playing themselves out, and bellydancing clubs as opposed to shopping malls. Or maybe a Mongolian sci fi movie featuring the wild beauty of the Great Steppe juxtaposed with massive Space Yurts as a backdrop, and the characters all own mechanical transforming eagles and shit.

Who's with me?!

Also American popular music sucks.

welcome to the culture industry
it won't change, the only thing we can do is support the indie artists

I agree about the American entertainment, but once you realize a lot of it is subliminal brainwashing, you end up shutting your mouth, getting over it, and not caring about who we're bombing / picking fights with / stealing from, and then you watch your god**** movie. ;_;
Please PM me with any songs you like that you think I haven't heard before!

incidentally, 3 of my favorite movies that came out after 2000 are not american: "pan's labyrinth", "the lives of others" and "tropa de elite"

some of the most mindblowing, and abstract movies have come out of america, you just have to steer really far from mainstream american stuff. David lynch for example.

This is beyond awesome, you deserve an oscar for the idea alone.
As for the topic, i'd say american entertainment is like teamliquid, it produces great stuff that gets drowend by a lot of crap but in the end it's still the best you get.

Money is not that important, there needs to be a developed industry with many people involved who all profit from the large experience that the industry as a whole has. Tradition is the word i guess^^.
I also dont think even an developed entertainment industry that isn't used to all the money could use it very well. A good idea has to come first, money probably broadens the possibilities but it would take some time for people getting used to naturally think of their ideas in this broadend space.
In that sense i agree that it would really be interesting to see what the entertainment industries of some countries would produce that would have had access to american amounts of money for 20 years.

Try some British entertainment. Some of the best writing I've seen on TV in a while.

Yeah, I'd love to see a good movie production about some country which guess less air-time, like say, India. They should also have scenes depicting the slums of the country, and the lives of those who live there, crossed over with references to their special culture, heritage and language.

Of course there can still be the typical storyline of lost loves whom you meet again 10 years later, and the good guy disposing of the bad guy and takes the girl away. In fact, it'll be best if this all happens while the protagonist is about to answer the Million Dollar Question on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire".....

+ Show Spoiler +
Slumdog Millionaire, if you haven't figured out already :p Maybe there is demand from people like the OP, who want something set in a different culture/country, which can be attributed to the success of the movie.
Same difference is not an oxymoron!

Yes, American popular music right now is absolutely atrocious but I still quite enjoy some of the recent movies. My main problem though is that they rely so heavily on cheap, immature laughs now.

You, sir, win a free coupon, redeemable for three (3) internets at the bar.

Please get up on the stage and accept your prize.

I'd definitely watch that Mongolian sci-fi. No doubt about that.

They have been repeating themselves forever. Karate kid remake, a fourth pirates movie, another nobody releases an album. You should read No Logo by Naomi Klein, it deals a lot with the mindset behind the consumer culture. Once you know whats up it frees your mind to care about other things.

Check out "Departures" (2008), its an awesome Japanese movie dealing with the distant relationship modern people have with death. Its top100 on IMDB. Funny too. Check out Rotten tomatoes from time to time as well to see what new foreign film is out and give it a look. There are amazing movies out, but you have to search a bit to find them. The same with music. They don't bring in the money, but they are fantastic works of art. And when you find something nice, blog about it here so we can enjoy it as well.

That would be Cowboys versus Aliens right? Only then with the cast of Mongol.
