Any cycling enthusiasts that can help repair?

Hey guys, I've recently picked up the bike and started riding. I have a trek 1000 (not sure what year it is anymore.. 2003?) and the thing makes a "cranking" noise when I'm pedaling. It's not the chain rubbing on the shifters.. but the harder I push down on the pedals the louder it gets.

Could just lubing the chain fix this? Or is there a different problem within the gears?

What's probably happening is that the shifter is trying to change gears but the chain keeps slipping.

Either switch gears to avoid the problem or adjust the shifter cable so you can use whatever gear it keeps slipping off of.

Most likely the bottom bracket needs work. Usually a bike shop can replace it for ~$20.

You need to open up the place where pedals fit in (no clue how it's called in english). There may be some broken balls balls inside. If so, you need to replace them (the crown with small balls), if they are ok you just need to lube all the moving parts inside.

If however, that does not fix your bike, you need to open the same part on the back wheel and check the same. If those mechanisms are not lubed/or have any broken parts it will make cranking noises and the wheel will spin harder.

As you can see, quite a few problems can cause the noise you are describing. Try putting the bike on a trainer or just raise the backwheel and have someone pedal it for you while you listen exactly where the sound is coming from.

Alternatively, hand it in to a bike shop and they will repair it (and go through the whole bike, retuning brakes etc.) for 20$

make sure to ask around and find a bike shop that wont rip you off. A lot of chain stores will take a look at your bike for a second and tell you you need to drop 100+ for their premium tune up that consists of about $10 worth of work
