For the first time since AP week, I was excited to go to bed. While my past endeavors were unsuccessful, watching Inception made me eager to experiment with lucid dreaming. The only dreams that I had strong memories of were ones that were nightmares or ones where I had brief glimpses of lucidity (which usually ended with sleep paralysis). I read through some lucid dreaming posts on TeamLiquid and some random boards dedicated to lucid dreaming, bored by the tips and suggestions that I had seen many times before. Realizing that there was nothing new to be learned, I marked the time 11:46PM -8/10/2010 in my dream journal and went to sleep.
As I opened my eyes, I knew something had happened. Whether it was a fantastic or merely routine passage of time, I simply had to know what had happened. I struggled to recall glimpses of the last few hours. As I strained, I glanced at the alarm clock to mark the time. The soft glow of the green 7-segment display read 3:26. It had only been roughly four hours since I had last written in my journal. I jotted down the time and the date 03:26 -8/11/2010. I was disappointed that I couldn't remember my dream -achieving lucidity seemed impossible. After watching Inception, I had been eager to find my own slice of virtual reality, but now, that reality seemed so distant and faint. I sighed and scribbled a few notes that vaguely described the shards of the dream I remembered. "At least it's a start" -the thought I tried to comfort myself with before drifting back to sleep.
Hazy, dull yellow sunlight showed through the blinds of my bedroom window. A sudden wave of frustration hit me. Somehow, like hundreds of times before, I knew instantly what had happened. I turned to my dream journal on the nightstand and opened it -knowing what I would find. The last entry was marked 11:46PM -8/10/2010.

false awakening?
False awakenings are very common when you are first learning how to lucid dream. just keep trying and eventually you will gain more control over your dreams as you become more and more used to it.
get into the habit of doing a reality check everytime you wake up. even if your not trying to lucid dream just make it so your normal routine as soon as you wake up is to confirm your awake. (my reality check is looking at both my hands and counting my fingers. if im dreaming i have extra fingers! this works for me 100% of the time)
another reality check that i have seen alot of people say works well is looking in a mirror. if the image is distorted or unatural your dreaming.
or another one is as soon as you get up try to turn on a light with a light switch. For reasons i cannot understand i can never get a light switch to work in my dreams alot of other people have the same experience.

I've gotten a light switch to work in my dreams, and never had a distorted reflection. I once almost completely had control of my sleep-walking when I was 10 year olds or so. Sadly, my Father was up and I didn't have control of my eyes fully, just my Memory which I had honed to be very sharp so that if I ever became blind, I could still walk around my house without killing myself I woke up and found that I had left the doors I had opened(including the fridge and a drawer and a cabinet with food in it) and when my parents asked what happened, I said I had just controlled my body while sleeping in it at the same time. My parents were stunned. And no, I am not lying one bit.

if i can't get a light switch on, and i'm in a dream, it's not a very good experience at all as something will usually be immediately coming after me

One time, I was lucid, then 'woke up' inside a really nice car. I thought it was the most normal thing in the world... until I actually woke up

I dont understand this lucid dreaming thing sometimes... I've had 2 in the past but they just happened randomly.
My question is... If you were conscious or aware enough to do something like look in the mirror/count your fingers and pay attention to the details to do a "reality check" wouldn't you already be lucid dreaming? What is the need to check... And once you realize you ARE dreaming, it'd be pretty tough to not wake up.

its hard to explain but i will give it a shot. basically when you do these reality checks over and over again when you are awake it starts to become very automatic. this turns into a subconscious routine over time.. your mind likes to stick to routines even when in the dream world. So you will not be lucid or aware that you are dreaming at the point that you decide to do a reality check. However after the reality check usually lucidity will be triggered or "realization" will dawn on you.
as for staying lucid after realizing that you are dreaming.. this can be tough at first its easy to be overwhelmed by emotions and the sheer surprise of it and "unnatural" feeling will often wake you up in a panic (or send you into a false awakening) however the more you practice the more you get used to it the easier it is to stay lucid and avoid being shocked awake.
Another thing.. avoid closing your eyes/blinking while lucid dreaming. that is usually an instant trip to sleep paralysis. sleep paralysis is very uncomfortable. I would describe it as being crushed to death.. only not as painful ( however i feel alot of pain in sleep paralysis some people dont..) alot of scary shit happens in sleep paralysis. you hear strange hissing noises and extremely loud banging noises there is usually a very awkward feeling of being surrounded by people or creatures watching you. sometimes you feel like they are grabbing you pulling you or reaching inside your body. the worst part of it is there is nothing you can do to stop it. you usually have to just ride it out. but overtime you get used to it and it doesnt bother you as much.
