I'm not talking about for-fun literature, I'm talking about mandatory, assigned SUMMER READING.

I currently have to read:

The Alchemist
Paulo Coelho

The Last Lecture

Randy Pausch

The Scarlet Letter

Nathaniel Hawthorne

Picture of Dorian Gray

Oscar Wilde

Post what you HAVE to read!

Nothing . Also, there's tons of websites you can use to read summaries of the books and be knowledgeable enough to BS something during class discussions (if you even have them).

We don't have class discussions. We have quote tests and essays. Some of the teachers read online summaries (sparknotes, etc) and make tests that don't have ANY of the quotes on sparknotes, schmoop, etc...

I'm in college now, but when I was in highschool I had to do my fair share of summer reading.
I read:

East of Eden (long but good)
A Midsummer Night's Dream
Scarlet Letter (beyond terrible imo)
The Pearl
Siddhartha (really good)
Mythology

I like money. You like money too? We should hang out.

The Alchemist was really good. So was picture of Dorian Gray.

As for me...

Moby Dick by Herman Melville (fuuuuu)
Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison (pretty damn good)

I got a 70% on my analysis of Scarlet Letter because it was one of my teacher's favorite books, and I wrote a 8 page criticism on the book's backwards moral message and Hawthorne's "hidden messages." If anyone asks you, be sure to say that you appreciated the moral values of Hester, or your just asking to get ripped apart.
Have you considered the MMO-Champion forum? You are just as irrational and delusional with the right portion of nostalgic populism. By the way: The old Brood War was absolutely unplayable

I have to read Ask the Dust by John Fante. Any good? My school's required reading is usually pretty easy/enjoyable.

This summer i read all of Shakespears sonnets\poetry like Venus and Adonis and lucrecia and all that good stuff. also a bunch of his best plays (Hamlet, Richard 3, Tempest, As you like it, The tTwo Gentlemen of Verona, The Comedy of Errors, basically everything except King Lear and some histories\tragedies, and the merchant of Venice (unfortunate but i can't learn any more from Shakespeare, reading the rest would be redundant).

Also Homers Illiad and Oddysey

I'm totally skipping Ovid for now.

20,000 leagues under the sea,

Siddartha, (mediocre, Herman Hesse seems to be a good author with a western interest in eastern philosophy but no actual knowledge. Especially if you have read anything about it.

The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, Dumas is such a baller.

Also Sri Nisargadatta Maharajs I am that, which is awesome, it totally changed my life.

I am cheating though because even though this does have an academical purpose it hasn't been strictly assigned to me.
