I've felt true happiness for the first time in about 7 years.

To give a little background I've been addicted to video games and the internet for a while now. Probably like 5 or 6 years.

My first year of college I literally spent my ass on the computer all day.

And then my parents left for 9 days and my brother came over and we had an awesome open house. I smoked a lot of weed and enjoyed real life and forgot about the computer. And now I'm no longer addicted. Or at least far less addicted.

I'm enjoying real life. I'm smiling. I feel great. I even smiled at some cute girl at the dentist today without even thinking about it and she gave a big warm one back at me.

Life is good!

Addiction is physical, video games arren't. I think what you're looking for the word "tendency".
It really bothers my that people talk about "video game addiction", it just doesn't seem logical to me at all. Why don't people say Mozart was addicted to composing? Why arren't a bunch of great people condemned as addicts?
Maybe because playing video games is asociated with bad habits and just generally being something bad it gets reffered to as an addiction. If people do not change their views about it, we can never see the games themselves being something good - something to learn from to earn money with etc.

What i'm trying to say if some kid is good at football, spends all his time playing and tries to go proffesional with it, he generally won't get "spat" on( i know bad term), while someone who pursues a video game path will.

Just putting my thoughts out there...

EDIT: Glad you're enjoying your life, maybe video games never were your thing?

this is because outside of Korea (south) there is no Legitimate Proscene to the masses for gaming. however to the US there IS a Proscene for football. Since people look up to the pros in anything due to their determination, they appreciate those kids who want to be pro at a sport like football

however society does not register video games as having the possibility of having legitimate pros because the games do not have established proscenes where the amount of effort to get in is tremendous

so society doesnt respect video games as much as it respects games with proscenes...to fix this we just need to create a legitimate proscene...sadly...thats WAY easier said than done

what about the wow player who plays 10 hours a day, with no common goal just to do it? My friend has this problem. I tried getting him to hang out with me and my friends, and also try playing other games. It diddint work, he played wow even more. I even deleted his account and he spend a month getting it recovered. Is that not addicted?

having a social life is pretty sweet. some day you will have to make your own, and not rely on other people's social circles. keep at it! develop the social skills, and dont get dispirited. theres a lot of happiness to be found through a balanced life.

@andr3 addiction is not how you define it. addiction is defined by consequence, because if you have no reason to quit, you are not an addict. another reason for this definition is the typical mindset of addicts (i am a drunk, if i drink and drive i'll kill someone, therefore i wont drive). not having a social life is a pretty big consequence.

I might have crossed the border and said that as if it would be a fact, but i've thought that generally addiction is reffered to substances, it's only been in recent times that it's the other things(video games, internet etc).
One could argue we're addicted to food, are we not?
My point stands, video game addiction? No way, i'm speaking from personal experience..somebody said something about playing WoW for 10 hours per day( we think of this mindless zombies pressing 1/2 whole day to farm gold). Will this so called "wow addict" freak out like crazy if his gametime would suddenly end? It's totally based of how one's mind works.

Ok here's the thing i've played bunch of games hardcore and i'll use WoW because it's most asociable with "video game addiction". I played it for 16 hours+ sometimes skipping sleep, food(not going out with my friends). BUT i did it because I wanted to do it, I desired this and that item I wanted to play it. The game did not control me, i controlled it.
Can you control drug abuse? I bet there's a hardy individual out there who's very resilient and would gladly prove me wrong, but generally no f***ing way.
There were numerous times when i was in the "moment(playing WoW hardcore) and i quit it, one of those was when SC2 beta began(hehe stronger addictions defeat weakers one?)

Addiction changes your chemistry and your mind(i mean drug abuse), the addiction described here as "video game addiction" is something which depends on how every individual faces it, some might seem like they're highly addicted, but once again it's not addiction it's a tendency, to do it because you feel like it, you control this activity, it does not.

I don't know what you want me to do, find 10 opinions of various doctors, an internet article?

Sorry OP for random rambling, i don't wanna change the subject of the thread i won't respond here anymore because i already feel i've made a fool out of myself.

Hope this definition from medical-dictionary.com clears this up:

+ Show Spoiler +
Addiction is a persistent, compulsive dependence on a behavior or substance. The term has been partially replaced by the word dependence for substance abuse. Addiction has been extended, however, to include mood-altering behaviors or activities. Some researchers speak of two types of addictions: substance addictions (for example, alcoholism, drug abuse, and smoking); and process addictions (for example, gambling, spending, shopping, eating, and sexual activity). There is a growing recognition that many addicts, such as polydrug abusers, are addicted to more than one substance or process

And congratz OP. Now stop compulsively checking TL.net like the rest of us =P

P.S. No offense Andr3, but you sound like you're in denial (Video games don't control me, I control video games! I can stop whenever I want to!)
