Shiny pokemon are those that you encounter in the wild that make this shiny effect and come in different colors than the regular version of that pokemon (i.e. - the red gyarados from pokemon silver/gold/crystal). They also have amped up stats than the rest of their original counterparts.

I'm fortunate to have caught 4 shiny pokemon in my life no strings attached, but if you want to turn luck in your favour and are playing Diamond and Pearl. Try to use your Pokerader to "Chain" monsters until you get a shiny like so

And heres a video:

I caught a shiny Azelf once before, I didn't know what it was at the time and overwrote the save data because someone else wanted to play it.

Actually even though I know what it is now I don't care one bit.
No I'm never serious.

So maybe I'm just seeing things here...
but I'm pretty sure that Puosu's post was a play on Effort Values.

Edit: If it isn't it's a pretty huge coincidence!

Sorry for the noob question but what's this game called? (obviously not just 'Pokemon') and is it available for PC?

I got a shiny Ralts and debated for hours over gallade vs gardevoir.
eventually went with gallade because he has BLUE TONFAS! :D

I stopped playing after GSC generation and recently got into DPP, I'm still getting used to all the new pokemon and stuff, but it's still a ton of fun!

Quick quiz: Are there more species of pokemon, or moves available?
+ Show Spoiler +
there are 491 different moves and 493 pokemon in the national pokedex (so, not counting different formes or the black/white reveals) the more you know...

On June 28 2010 05:55 ilovezil wrote:They also have amped up stats than the rest of their original counterparts.

This is totally wrong.
In fact, in GSC generation shiny pokemon all had shitty stats. This is because shininess was determinded from the pokemon's IVs in order to be compatible with RBY (they later added in a bit to determine shinyness)
In GSC, only pokemon with specific crappy IVs would be shiny, so in fact shiny pokemon all really sucked in terms of stats.

Nowadays though they can have any IV spread and be shiny.
+ Show Spoiler [serious nerdery inside] +
In Generation II, shininess is determined by the individual values (IVs) of a Pokémon. If a Pokémon's Speed, Defense, and Special IVs are 10, and its Attack IV is 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14 or 15, it will be Shiny. This determination allowed for compatibility with Generation I, as if a Shiny Pokémon is traded back, then traded forward, it would retain its shininess. Despite the bonus of backward compatibility allowing for a Shiny Pokémon to learn Generation I TMs, provided it was a Generation I Pokémon, Shiny Pokémon are only slightly above average in terms of IVs.

Due to the probability of the IVs lining up in any of these manners to produce a Shiny Pokémon, the chance of obtaining one in Generation II is approximately 1/8192. However, if one breeds a Shiny Pokémon properly, the offspring may have as high as a 1/64 chance of being Shiny, depending on the species of Pokémon.

Shininess is inherent to an individual Pokémon; that is, a Pokémon that starts out Shiny will always be Shiny, and one that is not will never be (provided its data is not altered through cheating). Upon evolution, a Pokémon will retain its Shiny status. A Shiny Charmander, if leveled up, will eventually become a Shiny Charmeleon and then a Shiny Charizard, just as a regular Charmander will become a regular Charmeleon and then a regular Charizard. This is due to the status being determined by values inherent to the Pokémon; however, there is a difference in the determination between Generation II and Generations III to IV.

It is called Pokemon. There are many different versions (or generations). The most current one should be Heartgold and Soulsilver (HS and SS for short). There are only marginal differences between HS and SS.

The game has always been for handheld (currently for NDS), but you can emulate it on your PC.

-----------------

I am fairly inspired by all of the reports above about shiny Xatu, Ralts, Psyducks, which are really good pokemon to use (and no, it's not because I like psychic types....). I have always been worried that when I do see a shiny pokemon, it would be a common, and poor species (for example, the majority of bug and normal types).

Do you all have NDS? How is Heartgold and Soulsilver? Better than Gold and Silver?

It's a remake of Gold and Silver with major improvements. It's definitely better.

I actually think rapidash is not *THAT BAD*. It can learn Flare Blitz by leveling up, which is the best move possible for a fire-type physical sweeper.

Why aren't you suggesting Shoddy Battle?

Also, to the OP, you should seriously consider just spending three hours one afternoon and learn how to abuse the random number generator. It's not that difficult, but if you get unlucky with frames/seeds, sometimes it can be slightly aggravating.

They have exactly the same stats as their non-shiny counterparts.

They only had identical stats starting in the 3rd generation (R/S/E). Shiny pokemon actually had inferior stats back in G/S/C because the shiny formula was based on IVs (and bad ones at that). But nowadays that doesn't matter, but it was really funny back a while ago.

Omg. I played a fair bit of Shoddy last summer but completely forgot about it. Might give that another go.

I was doing a Nuzlocke run through emerald and while I was training for the elite four I encountered a shiny Hariyama. Too bad I already had a Blaziken in my party because I would have totally used him for sure. Also I recall once encountering a shiny Beedrill back in the days of gold/silver. But at the time I didn't know what it was so I released it after figuring out it was no different from a regular one.

Empyrean, were/are you a big name in competitive Pokemans? I might be familiar enough with the scene to know who you are. But it all seems so long ago. T_T

Haha, no, not really. I have a smogon account on an alt, and none of my Shoddy accounts match up with either my TL or smogon accounts. I used to be very good at NetBattle (had a very potent Dusclops set that I don't think anyone else used...Pain Split/Curse/WoW/Protect with def/spd EVs), but I'm worse at DPP. I'm a consistent ~1400 CRE on shoddy with most of my teams, so in terms of skill, I'm above average in the smogon shoddy server, and way ahead of the general Pokemon playing base.
