So sad that a catastrophe of this scale happened.. It really is scary thinking of how much oil is getting dumped into the ocean
|
Really depressing. But if we imagine this is bad, you have to read this article. It talks about how each year for the last 50 years Nigeria has experienced oil spills equivalent to the exxon valdez spill. Really opened my eyes.+ Show Spoiler +http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/17/world/africa/17nigeria.html?scp=2&sq=nigeria&st=cse
Edit: Posted this in the other main thread of discussion on this but it was swept aside amongst other posts and I thought this might be a better place to post it. Hope this isn't spamming or anything.

I believe that whats being spilled is like less then one percent of the United States daily use of oil.

impossible when so many people need gas.

i wrote a paper about this for APES few days ago

And the terrible thing about this spill is that it was caused in part by the deregulation of drilling by the Bush administration (have been told). I'm a little more left so more government control is in my agenda... but I think a lot of people understand that this is not something you leave to the businesses to decide.

This is so sad. The worst part was seeing the dolphins swimming in the filthy water

Good time to buy BP stock?
|
I can't believe how this is all turning out. It's like BP doesn't even fucking care about life.
edit - it really does cause me pain to watch those animals suffer :[
|
whoever authorized the deep drilling without going through the proper safety measures and regulations should be beheaded and fed to the animals
|
All the politicians and BP execs that were responsible for the spill ought to be tied and dumped on top of the leak site ASAP.

|
This is so sickening...Makes me so sad that humans are doing this.

Except animals travel slower on this creep instead of getting a speed boost.

Its not just BP, Representative Barton from Texas clearly shows no consideration for life, and only cares about money, I mean he apologized to BP for them killing tons of wildlife.

Great pictures. You guys have not seen the full extent of this incident however.

My wife and I are currently in Biloxi, MS and are moving down here in August, but thankfully the oil hasn't hit the beaches here or ocean springs or gulfport. I've heard that Orange beach (i think is the name?) in Alabama has been oiled up. Mega unfortunate T_T

We are the parasites living off this planet after all. Much like a parasite works in the human body, we are using this planet in a way that benefits only us, and not the planet in general.
While we do have needs, it should not come before the safety of our environment and that should be our top priority. Believe it or not, our planet cannot sustain much more of our antics, we've already done too much harm and our poison seems to get only worse.
Mother nature is going to get her day one day or another...

Seriously though, the rig was made by a Korean company, was operated by an American company, the bit that actually failed was installed by a Swiss company, another bit that failed and contributed massively to the spill was installed by an American company, the US government was the one that was regulating it so loosely and allowing them to drill there in the first place and finally BP is only 40% British (~40% American too) AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ME WHATSOEVER.

After reading the article I immediately lost all sympathy for any major oil company. But I also lost some respect for myself, the fact that we are content to allow such great devastation to occur in one part of the world to satisfy our needs, it really opened my eyes.

And random 20,000,000,000 fines with no precedent and no legal backing being rushed out by lawmakers to pander to popular opinion is completely contrary to the ideals of every free country. That was the point Rep Barton was trying to make, that the fine has no basis in law and is little more than a shakedown on a rich company with a bad rep. BP are unpopular but in a free market economy the Gov can't just steal from companies it thinks can't defend themselves. It'll cost them more than 20,000,000,000 if they do it because of the distrust in the market the precedent will create. It's one thing for a Gov mandated authority acting within the law to fine companies for breaches of the law, it's quite another to retroactively extort money from rich companies just because you can. The law is the law, regardless of how unpopular the guy it defends is. That's pretty much the whole point of the legal system.

BP was already offering settlements to people, but there were allegations that some people weren't getting what they deserved or being outright denied. I imagine these settlements probably included a waiver from any further legal compensation.
If I understand correctly, the $20b is a fund that BP has agreed to be dispersed by a neutral body that will investigate claims. BP is protected from major lawsuits, and victims are ensured fairer compensation. This works out best for everyone, BP included. For BP, $20b is a drop in the... er... too soon?
Of course $20b is not a limit, we'll have to see what the total damage estimates come to, and for how many years harmed businesses will be able to collect.

Here you can see how big it is by moving the oilspill to where you live LOL http://www.ifitwasmyhome.com/
Also:
who the fuck put the oil to fire???? I want names and i want consequences!
Lets have the pollution contained in one area. If we burn, there will be CO2 emisions and global warming will be a bigger threat, so please shut down the fire. I thought human mankind was more clever but putting the oil to fire is just plain stupid. Oil disaster = regional disaster Global warming = entire earth
What a trade... lets seeee now will we have a piece of the earth polluted or do we want to pollute the entire earth ... hmm since my IQ is 5 i take the last option.
