I've decided that I want to learn French and I'm not going to tell any of you why because you'll laugh at me, but I can assure you that my effort is sincere and I have nothing but free time now that the semester is over.

As a result, can any of you recommend me good TV series to watch? I've found a series called Un, Dos, Tres which is actually a French-dubbed Spanish series, but I really like it and I want more shows like this, please.

Thank you, my darling French-speaking friends.

I'm sorry that, since I'm shamefully ignorant of French culture/pseudo-culture, I can't recommend you anything except Fantomas and Taxi (lol), however,

tell us why you want to learn it instead of just making it intriguing -.-

I think parler would be better in this case, however a native French person would be the better judge. You also conjugated dire incorrectly for this circumstance

"Donc je peux le parler comme elle." would be how I would structure it. Any French experts out there feel free to correct me.

To help yourself out, you should probably invest a few minutes into enabling the french keyboard setting so that you can start typing it as well.

Additionally, if you haven't already, you should buy some books/other learning resources in order to learn more about to language to augment the learning process, because IMO watching French television shows will only get you so far.

Bon courage, travaillez bien et vous reussirez.

It depends on your current level and what style you are looking for.

If you like "Un, Dos, Tres" you can find tons of french teen soaps. In general they are absolutely dumb but still funny and enjoyable. They were produced by the hundred during the 90s, that's not so recent so I don't know if you can easily get them.

My favourites would be "Premiers baisers" and "Les filles d'à coté"

This is syntaxically correct but doesn't make much sense. This sentence would translate to "thus, I can speak it like her". I have no idea what pubbanana was trying to say here though. "So I can speak to her" would be "Pour que je puisse lui parler" or "Pour que je puisse parler avec elle".

edit: "so I can speak it (French) like her" => "pour que je puisse le parler comme elle".

I strongly recommend the Assimil series. It is by far and away the best course for learning French (and German as well, can't comment on the Spanish one)

If you do it properly, it should get you to a decent standard (proper conversations, not 1 liners about ordering pizza) with a few months study and then it's a case of reading books/newspapers etc to pick up all the extra vocabulary.

Get the pronunciation down first though, or you'll end up reading everything wrong so when you do eventually start speaking it'll be very difficult to break your habits.

And finally, the older Assimil versions do tend to be better than the newer ones, although some of the colloquialisms will be out of date. That's not to say the new ones aren't good though, on the contrary, they're amazing.

Good luck

If it's for a girl, dont.

Most french people find it cute when you have a strong accent. ( Well, at least make sure that you are understandable :p ). But other than that I agree that the Assimil series are great for learning another language

If you aern't too pained in doing so, you could try to watch some normal shows, but in French aka. CSI [where-ever] , dubbed in French

Oh, and you might want to read some Baudelaire (Les Fleurs du Mal) if you're thinking of ever performing (for the love of God please search for a recording to hear how its pronounced so you don't sound like a neanderthal).

Besides watching TV series and learning by reading books, the best way to learn french easily (or any other language) is to look out for a pen friend to talk with daily

Les mondes engloutis. Known in English as Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea, and in Norway as Shagma.. I guarantee you you'll never get those songs out of your head.

Damn epic family shows.

Exactly, those teen soaps from the 90s - early 2000s would be optimal. They're way too dramatic, but what can I say, I love them.

Un, Dos, Tres is uploaded with full episodes on Google Video, if you can think of anymore shows I might be able to find there, please tell.

Also, thanks everyone for the advice so far. I do have quite a few books and I've read some of them already, but not just books for learning French, I also have some Albert Camus novels in the original French.

Tintin.

The ground-breaking portrayal of the indigenous peoples of the Congo was particularly progressive.

Oh, I love Tintin. I have all the books in English and you can find the cartoon here: http://www.youtube.com/user/Alxmir23

And also Asterix, that's another good one.
