So i was at a school sponsered graduation party, and they hired a hypnotist over, and i and 20+ other folks volounteered to be hypnotised.
What happened was that he first began to tell us to relax every muscle in our body, and keep relaxing continously. I tried hard to be hypnotized, but it just didnt work for me, i couldn't concentrate the crowd was too loud.
Anyways, after a few minutes, he introduced us on to a plane where he would tell us how cold or how hot it got. So what happened was a few kids started actually taking off their cloth without realizing, and this one chick that sat besides me fell on the floor while relaxing, and my legs can literally feel her body shivering when they hypnotist said that the temperature reached 0 F.
After a while, he told us to pretend that we were 3 and a half years old sitting at a bench, and that the person sitting beside us wasn't really a person but favorite stuffed animal. So the chick that sat besides me was sorta heavy (no offense). I'm 130 pounds, she was i'd say 160 at least. So what happened was that she crushed me, and then later when the hypnotist said "Sleep" her body would go to 100% relaxation and i was bodyslamed. I didn't want to be rude and just get out cuz i wasn't hypnotized so i continued staying there, with my back and spine suffering from the misery.
After the hynotist appointed a few subjects that he thought were very easily manipulated, (all girls, suprise?) so one girl was told to forget the number 3, and funny she couldn't do the math problem 1+2, another girl was asked for forget her last name, and she actually did not remember he last name at all. Another was asked to forget her boyfriend, and she didn't remember him at all during the event.
Finally the chick sitting besides me was told to be a famouse person, so then the hypnotist asked her a few questoins like "If a fan asked you to sign an autograph in the streets would you do it?" she would respond yes in a tone that you CAN TELL that she thinks she's the shit.
Near the end, the hypnotist made us pretend to be assmodles on the stage, so the kids that were actually hypnotised did their ass model routine, while me on the other hand had to fake it because i wasn't in the state of mind. He also made us do karate chops in the air, which i did too but faked.
At the end of the show when everyone was awokened, the hypnotist asked the subjects most prone to hypnotism if they were hypnotised, they all responded "No".
This is my first time experiencing this, and it's really fascinating how this can be achieved. IF one masters hypnotism he can literally make people do whatever he wants... O_O

did you talk to anyone that actually got hypnotized afterwards?
i would like to try that sometime except not in a public setting where i would make a fool out of myself in front of a bunch of people

The crowd was basically my graduating class with about 300 students, we all talked about it afterwards, the girls that were really hpynotised did not remember a sing THING that happened. And when they tried to explain to her what happened, she does not remember doing it at all.

I know its hard for me to explain my experience, but you just had to be there to fully experience it, it was INSANE. Not everyone is capable of being hypnotised like that, for one i was not able to. But some people are just really prone to it, and believe me, this hypnotism stuff is real. Everything i stated happened 100%,
I even banged my head against another chick's head while we fell due to relaxation, she still did not show symptoms of it while she was in the state.

Yea i've tried once but apparently i think to much and cant turn it off to be relaxed long enough.
My friend on the other hand was, he acted like a chicken for 5-6mins lol.
EDIT: yea mine was from school aswell, he rushed thru alot though as we had a good number of people to get through so coulda just been time.

What if everyone was in your same mindset? Maybe that's the true nature of hypnotism; social engineering, not mind control.

It wasn't, because when people asked me afterwards about the experience, i geneuinly respodned that i know what happened, but at the end those girls that i mentioned earlier, did not remember a SINGLE thing.

But again, people that aren't willing to be hypnotized cannot be. I was really skeptical about this stuff at first too, but after last night, i was convinced.

Assuming there's different techniques/approaches to get someone into a trance state.
But I guess it's much more difficult is the person is actively fighting it.

At a computer party I was working at during easter holidays, they hired a hypnotist. He started off saying that he can't make anyone to anything they don't want to, and that unless a person really tries to get hypnotised, he can't do it; no hypnotist can make anybody do anything unless that person really wants to get hypnotised. He also said that the best hypnotees are smart people with good imagination, and that some people are very easy to hypnotise, while with others, it can be nearly impossible.
Some of the people on stage did some pretty crazy stuff without hesitation, though.

When I was at boarding school I had a friend who was into all kinds of metaphysics and hypnotisation and whatnot. Anyway, one day he was came up to me and said "man this is some crazy shit, I can hypnotise myself to not be able to open my eyes!" so I was like, uh alright let me try it as well. So he goes through the motions telling me to relax etc and then when he asks me to try and open my eyes I can't do it. Then immediately when he snaps his fingers I can.

Being the scientific person that I am, we decided to investigate this further. It turns out that there was no hypotisation at all. If you try ridiculously hard to open your eyes (i.e. trying to pull your eyes open using your brow muscles) it just won't work. And that's because those muscles don't do shit when you blink. The hypnotisation process attempts to fool your mind into thinking your eyes have massive weights attached to them hence requires a lot of effort to open your eyes - hence why when I tried to open my eyes I was using the wrong muscles to do so (and hence my eyes were locked shut). The way to "break" the hypotisation is just to relax your eyes, then open - and that method worked 100%
Now I haven't been able to be hypotised any other way to date, but I have a feeling all that is all very similar to that.

All hypnotists will make sure they say this as part of their show, and its true. It is the entire "secret" to hypnotism. There are no brain wave manipulations or subconscious accessing going on, hypnotism is a very simple exercise in social engineering and a revealing example of how people will believe anything as long as it has been presented in a certain social situation.
A hypnotists job is to find the people in an audience who:
1. Are "believers" in hypnosis in a very literal sense.
2. Are not very socially independant.
3. Want to be "hypnotized"
These people will do many things if presented with a situation in which they can do things (for group attention) with a free "get-out-of-embarrassment" pass ("I was hypnotized"). The fact that they are able to convince themselves that they are not in control of their own bodies and actions is a purely personal suspension of judgement. The hypnotist merely provides an atmosphere conducive to this.
This tendancy for people to do almost anything if a large group of people seem to be "into-it' can be observed in a different setting in many religious rituals, people swearing that they are possessed by spirits or receiving divine revelations.
The fact that people not as susceptible to social suggestion feel the need to "fake it" in order to fit in (as the author did) simply adds to the atmosphere's credibility to those more susceptible ("everyone is feeling the holy spirit, I must be feeling it a little too"). Once a person has momentarily "bought-in" to the group action (Ex. pretended to be a monkey in a hypnotism show), the defense of "I can't remember anything, I was hypnotized" becomes a necessary social safety net to prevent embarrassment. Nobody (or very few) are going to admit that they acted like an idiot just to fit in. This in turn again reinforces other participants ("Everyone says they felt like a monkey, maybe I WAS really out of control and not just pretending").
This self-reinforcing cycle can be easily seen in a hypnotist's routine:
No hypnotist will ever start out telling people to take their clothes off and dance around, nobody would do it (although ostensibly they are "hypnotized"). Instead they always begin with simple things like holding hands with your neighbor, then they slowly become more and more wild and embarassing. Once someone has held hands, it's not a big step to make an animal noise or something else mildly strange. This in turn leads to something larger, like collapsing out of their chair. Once this process has begun it is VERY difficult for a participant to break out. When a person has made strange animal noises, crawled across the room, and pretended to be a celebrity, and the hypnotist says, "do the funky chicken", how is the person going to escape? It would be far more embarrassing NOT to do the funky chicken at this point, because it would be acknowledging that they are not in fact "hypnotized" and have simply made an idiot out of themselves in front of a crowd of their own volition. The "hypnotized" person HAS to do whatever crazy thing the hypnotist says because to refuse would be to blow their "get-out-of-looking-like-a-tool-free" card for the whole performance.
Hypnotism is real only in that it demonstrates how sadly manipulable people are in crowd situations and how depressingly far some are willing to go to avoid doing something that seems embarrassing. The exact same principles are in effect here as when an entire apartment ignores someone being stabbed to death, or when a violent riot occurs.
There was a hypnotist at my high school graduation too, and when it was over I was more depressed about the future of humanity than at any other point in my life.
Don't be hypnotized.

i've been to many of these shows
nothing ever worked for me, even though i've tried. really really hard. i have even tried altering my own state of mind and coming to these things high or drunk and still nothing.
what usually happens is i try my best to relax, to clasp my hands blah blah blah, do everything and sort of get into it although i know i am fully in control. i try not to think about it.. then at some point i just feel stupid and stop.
i still hold the belief that everybody is just faking it

One comedy club I went to had a sex hypnotist. Some highlights were: watching my guy friend make an ass out of himself by deepthroating a beer bottle. Same dude hump the bejesus outta a chair on command, and later a girl next to him. The grand finale was the hypnotist having one of the big biker dudes he got to lay on the ground, and had everyone else (like 15 other people) nurse off of him like puppies.

In the chapter about Hypnosis, Brown points out that in the Milgram experiment, around 60% of the subjects would deliver a possibly lethal electric shock to another human if they were ordered to do it by a scientist. It isn't too hard to believe that people would be willing to jump around and humiliate themselves for the amusement of a bunch of morons if an authority figure told them to.

I use to be really sceptical about hypnotism, until I dabbled a bit in magic tricks and realised it really isn't that mystical or unbelievable. I didn't get a chance to learn it though since it's only really effective with a large group of people because it sometimes needs one or two to fall for it before a ripple effect convinces many others it's real (and other reasons).

Pretty much the same thing happened to me. About 20 people, girl next to me froze her ass off, some forgot their names or how to read etc, but I don't think I got hypnotized, I remember pretty much the whole thing. However, I've been told that apart from the stuff I remember, I did some things I don't remember.

This is probaby a good starter, Derran is an extremely sharp guy and you know he knows what he's talking about. (If you don't know of him you can check out his shows and interviews).

LOL we my hypnotist did the same thing, he removed people that were like that too. But i guess i was too good of a faker.
