[help] Router latency problem

keNn) Philippines297 Posts May 06 2010 03:41 GMT #1 I have a new wireless router but i'm having problem with the latency. i tried pingin my router but after a few pings a fluctuation in ping occurs (ping goes up so much). this fuck up my gaming experience. this only happens when i'm connected thru wireless but on wired this doesn't happen. what could be the problem? below is a picture of pinging my router. please help me. -edit- omg sorry for the title . mod please rename blog title to . Myrmidon United States9452 Posts May 06 2010 04:43 GMT #3 Given the duration of that latency spike, my best guess is that you have a cheap wireless adapter that is at fault (not your router's problem). For wireless adapters to roam to another router and switch over to a new one, they need to scan for the presence of any such other routers that may be operating at different frequencies. While they're scanning they can't actively communicate. Cheap adapters generally use cheapo roaming algorithms that suck and interrupt your service periodically as you're experiencing. More expensive adapters may only decide to scan other frequencies if they detect unacceptably low SNR or packet loss or something else. (still not optimal solutions but better ones) See if you can turn off roaming features or set them to the least aggressive settings, or something like that. Try updating your drivers too. Failing that, another wireless adapter may perform better. Possibly ping times like those could indicate short bursts of interference (like microwave ovens, or other radios operating at that frequency), but I doubt it. The constant 1 ms changing to 1658 ms to me strongly indicates the roaming/scanning issue.
